On Tuesday morning, the Tommy Marren Show investigated loneliness and isolation within the farming community. We spoke to a number of contributors to try and identify why farmers are so impacted by loneliness and isolation.Our guests included local farmers Martin Peyton and Mark Devane, full time beef farmer and former VP of Macra as well as Farm Safety Champion with Irish Rural Link, Mona O'Donoghue Concannon who is Interim chair of Women in Agriculture Stakeholder Group and member of the ICSA and students from St Mary's College in Ballysadare Hannah Milanzie and Izabella Lehany McGoldrick. The group is aimed at people who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, OCD, anger, insomnia, or general nervousness, and who would like to improve their mental health in a supportive environment.The opening night takes place this Friday (March 13th) at 7:30 PM at the Order of Malta building in Westport (Eircode: F28 DE24). Tommy speaks to Sean Kelly and Mary Gaughan, who are members of the Foróige Mentoring Staff, about Foróige Mentoring's Big Brother Big Sister Programme.The programme connects young people with a trusted adult volunteer over the age of 18, for an hour a week over the period of one year. Tommy Marren was joined on air this morning by Chief Executive Officer of Parkinson's Ireland Shane O'Brien and Parkinson's nurse specialist Laura Niepage. Today marks the beginning of Fostering Awareness Week 2026. At Fostering First Ireland they are always trying to keep up with the demand for more foster carers. Tommy speaks to 30 year old Eric Fitzgerald who suffers from a rare progressive neurodegenerative condition called Friedeichs Ataxia. It affects 200 people in Ireland and has no cure. Currently, the people in Ireland with the disease cannot access the first approved drug for this condition called Skyclary, due to cost effective issues.
