Hidden Grace in the Storm: Reflections on Hurricane Helene, Part 1
Welcome to Season 3 of The Joy Prescription Podcast!
We've had a delightful experience this season interviewing pioneering individuals who are integrating faith into their work in their respective fields of healthcare, coaching, psychology, and ministry.
On September 27, 2024, the place we call home, Western North Carolina, received unimaginable damage and destruction from the impacts of Hurricane Helene. Recovery efforts are still ongoing as many seek to rebuild and face unexpected new beginnings.
To close out Season 3, we wanted to take this opportunity to remember and reflect upon our experiences and highlight the hidden grace that is discovered in the hard, stormy experiences of life.
In this 2-part conversation, we explore our pre-storm preparation efforts, our initial experience when the storm hit, lessons learned to help us better prepare for future disasters, and the many ways God, in His grace, has showed up in the storm and the aftermath.
Thank you for taking the time to listen and share in our experiences.
Love,
Cindy and Brooke

6. Overstimulation vs. Overwhelm: Finding Peace in a Noisy World - Part 1
31:11||Season 4, Ep. 6Host: Dr. Cynthia “Cindy” Libert, M.D. & Brooke JackRun Time: 31:11Episode Overview:In a world that never seems to quiet down, it’s no surprise that so many of us feel stretched thin, scattered, or constantly “on edge.” In this episode, we explore why this topic matters right now—in an age where our senses are flooded from the moment we wake up to the moment we finally put the phone away.Together, we gently untangle the difference between overstimulation and overwhelm—two experiences that often feel the same but come from very different places. You’ll learn how to recognize the signs your body and mind are sending you, and why understanding which one you’re facing can be the key to finding relief. We also take a compassionate look at what’s happening beneath the surface: the brain and nervous system working hard to keep you safe, the amygdala sounding its alarms, and the stress hormones that tug at your focus and mood. But woven through it all is a message of deep hope. Thanks to the power of neuroplasticity, the brain is not stuck in survival mode forever. It can calm, reset, and heal—even after long seasons of strain. We root all of this in the steady grounding of biblical truth—reminding ourselves that our bodies were intentionally and wonderfully designed, not by accident but with purpose. Faith becomes more than comfort; it becomes a guide for understanding our limits, a reminder of God’s care for our whole being, and a pathway to the kind of healing that restores us from the inside out.Resources Mentioned:Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity by Dr. Saundra Dalton-SmithThe Life You Long For: Learning to Live from a Place of Rest by Christy Nockels[Virtual] Shalom Bible Study for Women hosted by Cynthia Libert, M.D. - register hereBiblical Reflections:Psalm 46:10, Luke 5:16Next Steps:Share this episode with a friend who needs encouragement.Subscribe and leave a review to help others find The Joy Prescription.Want more Christ-centered health wisdom? 1. What Is Shalom? The Biblical Key to Healing and Wholeness
05:09||Season 4, Ep. 1Host: Dr. Cynthia “Cindy” Libert, M.D.Run Time: 5:09In today’s episode, Dr. Cindy invites you into a gentle, heartfelt conversation about one of the most beautiful and misunderstood words in Scripture: shalom. Far more than simply “peace,” shalom speaks of wholeness—of restoration, healing, and alignment with God's design for your life. You’ll explore what shalom means biblically, how it touches every part of your being, and how Jesus, the Prince of Peace, offers us more than calm—He offers us completion.💬 In This Episode, You’ll Learn:The deeper biblical meaning of shalomHow shalom touches our physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual healthWhy peace is not something we earn—but something we receiveThe healing power of returning to right relationship with God, others, and yourselfWhere to begin when you're feeling weary, scattered, or broken📖 Scripture References:Isaiah 9:6 (ESV) “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given... and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”Ephesians 2:14 (ESV) “For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility.”John 14:27 (ESV) “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”Proverbs 4:20–22 (NIV) “My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.”🕊️ Key Takeaway:Shalom isn’t something we hustle to achieve—it’s something we receive through relationship with Jesus, the Sar Shalom. He is our wholeness. He is our restorer. He meets us in our frayed places and gently says, “Let Me take care of that.”Reflective Questions:Where in your life do you feel a longing for greater wholeness? In what areas is Jesus inviting you to receive His shalom today? How might you shift from striving to resting in His love and provision?Next Steps:Share this episode with a friend who needs encouragement.Subscribe and leave a review to help others find The Joy Prescription.Want more Christ-centered health wisdom?
