112: Unpacking Purity Culture: Analyzing the Shame, Myths and Long Term Effects with Dr. Camden
Welcome to the sex therapy talk you didn't know you needed! In this week's episode, Brittney and our guest Dr. Camden tackle the complex effects of purity culture, a movement that peaked in the 1990s-2000s and used shame and fear to promote abstinence until marriage. We explore the long-lasting consequences of this messaging on peoples' sexuality, faith, and relationships- and share our own stories. This episode underscores the importance of honest conversations about sexuality and encourages us to critically examine the messages we received and seek healing from the lingering effects of purity culture. Including:
- The definition of purity culture vs a healthy personal sexual ethic
- How effective abstinence pledges actually were according to research
- The gendered impact of the purity culture message on women and men
- Myths and misconceptions of purity culture that often lead to unrealistic expectations
- The need for rebuilding a healthy mind-body connection and reclaiming sexuality as a natural and positive part of life.
- and much more!
This is a conversation for all listeners whether single or married!
