The Alarming Link Between Alcohol and Cancer

Season 7, Ep. 17

It's not something that people want to talk about. We choose to ignore the science and stats as we top up our glasses with Prosecco or head to the bar for another round. We never stop to take in the truth. The actual facts about Alcohol and Cancer.

Today, Vic and Hamish find out how alcohol causes cancer, whether or not it's just extreme drinkers that get it (spoiler alert - light and moderate drinkers can too!) their own experiences of family and friends diagnosis and how, as a society, we choose to ignore the scary fact that alcohol is a class A carcinogen, Thats right people! sorry to be the bearers of bad news! It sits right next to its good old mates, Cigarettes, Asbestos and ...... wait for it.....Radiation.

As you may know, these two are no Huberman's so today they have invited an expert on that has had first hand, lived experience of cancer, Kathryn Elliott. Kathryn was a binge drinker that believes her type of breast cancer was directly linked to her alcohol consumption.

It's a not so witty but very necessary episode of Sober Awkward. Trigger warning for those that have experienced cancer.

  • 11. Does Building Self-Esteem in Teens stop them Leaning on Booze?

    41:50
If we raise kids that have high self-esteem will this make them less likely to drink alcohol? This episode is for the parents out there that are feeling scared about their kids becoming teens, going off the rails, drinking cider in farmers fields and putting themselves at risk because of bad teenage choices. This is also for anyone who was this child (lets guess at about 98% of our audience!) was it your low self esteem that caused you to reach for the bottle and would life have been different if our parents had taught us to simply love who we are?Today Vic and Hame talk about about how they felt as teens, why they rebelled and why they felt 'less than' growing up? Don't worry, after they've bored you with all their angsty teen insecurities they'll turn it all around and find out why instilling good values and some good old self worth into our kids might mean they are less likely to follow a drunken crowd and make wiser choices by themselves.Get your biro's out Mums and Dads. • 10. Are you a Beer Bully?

    44:07
Vic knows a lot about beer bullies... due to the fact she was one.She used to force, anyone that wasn't joining in with 'the fun' into downing a pint. She's not proud of it, but her past indiscretions mean that in today's episode you get deep insight as to why non-drinkers get bullied into having 'just one' and what the bullies will say to convince you to have a tipple to two.Vic and Hamish will also go over some brilliant responses that will hopefully stop the 'Tequila Tormentors ' in their tracks. Oh, and watch out! There are some very bad cockney accents and some unrelated talk of coat hangers in bums. It's quality stuff guys! SHOW NOTESJOIN PATREON! and buy us a Cuppa so we can keep being awkward!https://www.patreon.com/user?u=81897291www.cuppa.community – The Free Social Network for the Sober and Sober Curious - Sober Events – Therapy – Sobriety Courses – Sober Groups and loads more.@soberawkward @drunkmummysobermummy@cuppa.community @hamishadamscairns @patreon @spotify @acastIf you are struggling with your relationship with alcohol please reach out to your local doctor, a therapist, AA Group or just chat to a close friend. • 9. Feeling Rejected? Here's What You Need to Do!

    01:06:10
Rejection. It’s something we all feel at some point in our lives, if not at school or a family member, it can be in a relationship or when you get sober. Whenever it might happen to you, there's one guarantee – it’s painful.Vic feels rejection deeply. She even feels it from people she doesn't know. Whereas Hame doesn't care too much about what others think. His strong values and self-confidence mean that if people so turn their back on him.... He can handle it without going to therapy. But, as always on Sober Awkward, they don't have all the answers. So today, these two idiots get an expert to come on and explain what's going on in their tiny weeny brains when friendships get sticky.Today they welcome David Watson. An expert on personal development and neuroscience.David says,'My core belief is simple yet profound: every individual harbours immense potential, capable of achieving anything they set their minds to. Yet, there's one potent supercomputer that often stands as the primary hurdle—the human brain. Understanding its intricacies, its unique drivers, and the lens through which it views the world is paramount. To unlock its full potential, we must learn to reprogram it, harnessing its power to work for us rather than against us. 'Intrigued? So were we. Listen why harnessing your power, knowing your values and having a 'Million Dollar Mindset' could unravel rejection once and for all.To find out more about Dave just pop him and email at dave@neurolead.net.auor head to www.neurolead.net.auJOIN PATREON! and buy us a Cuppa so we can keep being awkward!https://www.patreon.com/user?u=81897291www.cuppa.community – The Free Social Network for the Sober and Sober Curious - Sober Events – Therapy – Sobriety Courses – Sober Groups, Tea and loads more.Buy Sober Awkward T-Shirts and Tea at: www.cuppashop.com@soberawkward @drunkmummysobermummy@cuppa.community @hamishadamscairns @patreon @spotify @budsandbeadsteaIf you are struggling with your relationship with alcohol please reach out to your local doctor, a therapist, AA Group or just chat to a close friend. If you are newly sober, we can guarantee your water intake is about to go through the roof. Tea, coffee and sparkling water are your new best friends - and that can sometimes feel a little dull!In today's episode, Vic and Hame will talk you through the benefits of increasing your water intake, tackle some of the myths surrounding the water content in alcohol and (try!) and make you feel less dull whilst ordering water in a bar.We went off on a couple of weird tangents about Binking Ginges and why this episode should be sponsored by the Shewee and for some reason Vic tried to make this episode all about pee.
