WTF with Marc Maron Podcast

Mike Leigh’s films are known for their observant depictions of the working class, their tragicomic tones, and their improvisational construction. But there are some misconceptions about his work that Mike would like to clear up. He does so while talking with Marc about his life-changing introduction to foreign films, his method of collaboration with his actors, the difference between realism and naturalism, and some details about the making of Secrets and Lies, Vera Drake, Topsy-Turvy, Naked and his new film Hard Truths.

This collection of stories from the early years of WTF involve the sober journeys of five different guests. From Episode 55 (starting at 2:25) comedian and actor Rob Delaney recounts a harrowing night that he was lucky to get out of alive. From Episode 278 (17:55) comedian and talk show host Craig Ferguson explains why alcoholism is part of his personality. From Episode 487 (22:50) comedian, songwriter and podcast host Karen Kilgariff tells Marc why she went cold turkey. From Episode 533 (32:10) actor and podcast host Dax Shepard describes finding his bottom at an airport bar. And from Episode 623 (38:06) actor and writer Jason Segel reflects on the changes he had to make in his life.

Adrien Brody does a lot of research for his roles, but his performance in the new movie The Brutalist was shaped largely by his family’s immigrant experience and it aligned with his desire to play characters who are outsiders. Adrien also talks with Marc about becoming the youngest winner of the Best Actor Oscar for The Pianist and how it was a little too much to take. But on the flip side, he explains why he revels in the joy and camaraderie of making Wes Anderson’s films.
