We're Making A Movie: The Lighting Department

Season 1, Ep. 50

The Gaffer is one of those film jobs most people have heard of, but very few could actually explain. And honestly, even filmmakers can get fuzzy on where the line between G&E, grip, and electric really lives. But after making our first feature, we can tell you this… a great Gaffer changes everything.

We’re sitting down with our Gaffer, Shane Hunter, who worked his magic on Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think. We’re talking about what the job actually is, what working on our movie looked like, and just how much movie magic happens in the lighting. Shane turned day into night, made a powerless house work on screen, and fought off every rogue flare from passing cars.

Join us for a full conversation on all things light, electric, and the kind of behind-the-scenes wizardry that makes a movie actually look like a movie.

Meet Shane:

Shane Hunter is a Gaffer living in Knoxville, TN, working across the southeast and the country. When he's not working, he enjoys cycling, photography, backpacking, and spending time with his wife and two dogs! @horizongrip @askforshane

  • 57. We're Making A Movie: Talking Editing with Alexander Jeffery

    01:01:09||Season 1, Ep. 57
    Editing a feature film is hard enough. Editing a movie musical? That feels like a whole different level of filmmaking wizardry.This week we're wrapping up our deep dive into post-production editing with Alexander Jeffery, Producer, Cinematographer, and Editor of one of our favorite indie films of the past year, Peeping Todd.We're going to ask about the unique challenges of editing a musical, how being your own cinematographer might have helped the process, how integral the planning process was, and if that prep work showed up in the editing bay. Join us as we pick Alexander's brain and continue our quest to learn everything we can about finishing a feature film.Alexander Jeffery hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, was raised in El Dorado, Arkansas, and is now based in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he co-owns the production company Bespoke Works LLC with his friend and longtime collaborator, Paul Petersen. After receiving a double major in Theatre Performance and Film & New Media from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011, Alexander moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams of acting and filmmaking. Quickly realizing Los Angeles wasn’t the right fit for him, Alexander moved back to the South to make low-budget, independent films with his friends.His first feature film, A Chance Encounter, was released by Samuel Goldwyn Films in the fall of 2022, both theatrically and on-demand, after winning the audience choice award at Heartland Film Festival in 2020. In 2015, his short film The Bespoke Tailoring of Mister Bellamy won the $50,000 Grand Prize at the Louisiana Film Prize. MTV called it “an acutely relevant, achingly human film.” Recently, his documentary The Power of Pickleball was released by Documentary+ and is on 7 airlines internationally. Alexander’s first venture into television, the indie TV pilot Fixation, premiered at SeriesFest in May 2026.Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/turnsoutmovie/Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61581798639056We’re Making a Movie is a podcast that follows the behind-the-scenes adventures of two first-time filmmakers, sharing honest insights and lessons learned to inspire others on their filmmaking journey.A Podcast from first-time filmmakers - for first-time filmmakers.WANT TO HELP US MAKE A MOVIE?PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sneakypineappleMerch: https://sneaky-pineapple.myspreadshop.com/BUSINESS TIME! Natalie is in Los Angeles this week as we gear up for our post-production crowdfunding campaign and film the Sneaky Pineapple Productions portion of our pitch video. So duh! This is the perfect excuse for a true Wild Card episode.We're checking in on where we are with Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse …We Think, how we’re doing since wrapping production, what’s keeping us up at night, what we’ve learned so far in post-production.Will we stay on topic? 01:00:56||Season 1, Ep. 55
    Our feature film, Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think, has a first assembly. A first edit. A rough cut. For the first time, all the pieces of the puzzle are on the table and flipped over. The scenes are in order, the story exists, and we can finally start to see the movie we've spent years talking about.Which means it’s the perfect time to check back in with our Director and Editor, Mike Hayhurst. This is Mike's second feature film in the editing bay, and we're excited to talk about what he's learned since his first go-around, what surprises he’s had, and maybe even get a glimpse of what Turns Out might become as the edit continues to take shape.Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/turnsoutmovie/Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61581798639056We’re Making a Movie is a podcast that follows the behind-the-scenes adventures of two first-time filmmakers, sharing honest insights and lessons learned to inspire others on their filmmaking journey.A Podcast from first-time filmmakers - for first-time filmmakers.WANT TO HELP US MAKE A MOVIE?PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sneakypineappleMerch: https://sneaky-pineapple.myspreadshop.com/BUSINESS TIME!Subscribe to this Channel: https://goo.gl/qjbptEAvailable wherever you get your podcasts!Acast - https://shows.acast.com/were-making-a-movieApple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/were-making-a-movie/id1799476284Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/1lKYtG3GiIouwXEcCz9UvK?si=dd999e0f669b4307Amazon/ Audible - https://amzn.to/4koHAX9Pandora - https://www.pandora.com/podcast/were-making-a-movie/PC:1001099016SOCIAL MEDIA REQUIREMENTSTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@natalieandtaraInstagram https://www.instagram.com/natalieandtara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NatalieandTaraTwitter: https://twitter.com/NatalieNTaraWanna reach us? Let’s dig in on the editing process and start talking to some real deal editors! First up to bat, we’ve got Daniel Lowman.Coming from a documentary background but with hands-on experience in narrative filmmaking, Daniel lives in the realm of taking all of the footage, performances, and chaos from production and shaping it into something that actually works on screen. We’re taking a look at the editing process from his perspective- how he approaches building a story in post, and what filmmakers should be thinking about before they ever hand footage over to an editor.Because at the end of the day, you can shoot everything in the world… but it’s in the edit where the film really comes to life.Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/turnsoutmovie/Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61581798639056Daniel Lowman is a director and editor based in Utah, driven by the belief that “passion will find an audience.” His creative curiosity has led him to collaborate with some of the most niche and fascinating individuals across the globe.
