We're Making a Movie

We just watched our movie! For the very first time! This weekend we had the privilege of watching Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think from beginning to end and we want to share what it was like to see our very first feature film coming together. It’s still in the editing process. There are still things to tweak, shape, polish, and build as we continue through post-production. But finally getting to see all the work our team has poured into this film was pretty damn special.And it’s been a fascinating learning experience for us. We’ve made a lot of short films together, but watching a feature take shape is an entirely different beast. There’s so much more story to track, so many pieces to balance, and so much that continues to evolve once you get into the edit.There’s still a lot of work ahead. We're thrilled to continue our Filmmaker Chats with writer and director Rachel Israel, whose latest feature, The Floaters, is now out in the world.Rachel is no stranger to the feature filmmaking journey. With three features under her belt, she's experienced every stage of the process. We're excited to dive into the lessons she's learned along the way, how her perspective has evolved from one feature to the next, and what it really feels like to send your work out into the world. Whether you're dreaming of directing your first feature or you're already deep in the process, this conversation is full of insight from a filmmaker who's been there.Rachel Israel is a New York-based writer and director. Her feature debut, KEEP THE CHANGE, world-premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it won Best U.S. Narrative Feature and Best New Narrative Feature Director. It also won Best Debut Film and the FIPRESCI Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. KEEP THE CHANGE opened in theaters internationally in 2018 as a NY Times Critic’s Pick, which described it as “a landmark motion picture” that “deserves to be widely seen" and was critically acclaimed for being a fresh take on the romantic comedy, and an authentic and nuanced portrayal of characters on the autism spectrum. Rachel’s work has received grants and support from The Sundance Institute, the Rooftop Film Festival, and the Princess Grace Foundation. She has taught filmmaking at Columbia University’s Graduate School of the Arts and Rhode Island School of Design. Rachel is currently in post-production on her 3rd feature, INFLUENCED, starring Jill Kargman (ODD MOM OUT), David Krumholtz, Justin Bartha, which was filmed in New York City. She is represented by Verve Talent & Literary Agency. This week, we're sitting down with Jackie Nico to find out how she’s building a career for herself.She recently executive-produced, co-wrote, and starred in the award-winning pilot “The Ballad of the Bushmare” and is currently in pre-production on two feature films, “Margot My Name is Darkness” and “Golden: A Rumpelstiltskin Tale.” Add that to her comedy television pilot in post-production, “Divine Consign “ actively seeking distribution, and we feel like there’s a lot of knowledge Jackie can impart for our upcoming journey.We’re so excited to start our side quest interviewing filmmakers as we meet new folks along our own filmmaking journey. She refined her skills at The Second City Chicago and the Joel Hall Dance Center before studying Theater and Dance at Dean College. Editing a feature film is hard enough. Editing a movie musical? That feels like a whole different level of filmmaking wizardry.This week we're wrapping up our deep dive into post-production editing with Alexander Jeffery, Producer, Cinematographer, and Editor of one of our favorite indie films of the past year, Peeping Todd.We're going to ask about the unique challenges of editing a musical, how being your own cinematographer might have helped the process, how integral the planning process was, and if that prep work showed up in the editing bay. Join us as we pick Alexander's brain and continue our quest to learn everything we can about finishing a feature film.Alexander Jeffery hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, was raised in El Dorado, Arkansas, and is now based in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he co-owns the production company Bespoke Works LLC with his friend and longtime collaborator, Paul Petersen. After receiving a double major in Theatre Performance and Film & New Media from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011, Alexander moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams of acting and filmmaking. Quickly realizing Los Angeles wasn’t the right fit for him, Alexander moved back to the South to make low-budget, independent films with his friends.His first feature film, A Chance Encounter, was released by Samuel Goldwyn Films in the fall of 2022, both theatrically and on-demand, after winning the audience choice award at Heartland Film Festival in 2020. In 2015, his short film The Bespoke Tailoring of Mister Bellamy won the $50,000 Grand Prize at the Louisiana Film Prize. MTV called it “an acutely relevant, achingly human film.” Recently, his documentary The Power of Pickleball was released by Documentary+ and is on 7 airlines internationally.
