Composers make movie magic happen… and, if we’re being totally honest, we have very little idea how that magic actually works.So we’re bringing in someone who does.Film composer Judith Moy joins us to talk about what actually goes into creating a score, how a composer finds the sound of a movie, and how music can completely change the way we experience a scene.Judith composed the score for And Through the Portal We Go and has spent her career working across film and television, so we have A LOT of questions.How do you turn an emotion into music? What does working with a director actually look like? How early does a composer get involved? And what do you do when a filmmaker says something incredibly helpful like, “Can you make it feel more… you know… sad?”Judith Moy - Upon her move to Los Angeles, Judith spent a year working at Hans Zimmer and Sony/ATV’s Bleeding Fingers Music. Under the mentorship of Emmy-winning composer Denise Santos, she worked on projects including Eden: Untamed Planet (BBC) and Island Of The Sea Wolves (Netflix). She also contributed music to competition show Alone(History Channel) and Bleeding Fingers’ affiliated production library, Extreme Music. She has worked in music departments for productions including Best Foot Forward(AppleTV+), Organ Trail (Paramount), Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts (Paramount), Young Rock (NBC), and Boots (Netflix). Recently, Judith has worked under the mentorship of Nathan Matthew David on projects including Joy Ride (Lionsgate), Stephen Curry: Underrated (A24/AppleTV+), Diarra From Detroit (Paramount+), and The Brothers Sun(Netflix). Currently, she is working with Nathan on his score for the upcoming DreamWorks Animation film, Forgotten Island. Judith’s relationship with director Mike Hayhurst and Evening Squire Productions began while she was still an undergraduate at NYU with a 48 Hour Short Film challenge. We just watched our movie! For the very first time! This weekend we had the privilege of watching Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think from beginning to end and we want to share what it was like to see our very first feature film coming together. It’s still in the editing process. There are still things to tweak, shape, polish, and build as we continue through post-production. But finally getting to see all the work our team has poured into this film was pretty damn special.And it’s been a fascinating learning experience for us. We’ve made a lot of short films together, but watching a feature take shape is an entirely different beast. There’s so much more story to track, so many pieces to balance, and so much that continues to evolve once you get into the edit.There’s still a lot of work ahead. We're thrilled to continue our Filmmaker Chats with writer and director Rachel Israel, whose latest feature, The Floaters, is now out in the world.Rachel is no stranger to the feature filmmaking journey. With three features under her belt, she's experienced every stage of the process. We're excited to dive into the lessons she's learned along the way, how her perspective has evolved from one feature to the next, and what it really feels like to send your work out into the world. Whether you're dreaming of directing your first feature or you're already deep in the process, this conversation is full of insight from a filmmaker who's been there.Rachel Israel is a New York-based writer and director. Her feature debut, KEEP THE CHANGE, world-premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it won Best U.S. Narrative Feature and Best New Narrative Feature Director. It also won Best Debut Film and the FIPRESCI Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. KEEP THE CHANGE opened in theaters internationally in 2018 as a NY Times Critic’s Pick, which described it as “a landmark motion picture” that “deserves to be widely seen" and was critically acclaimed for being a fresh take on the romantic comedy, and an authentic and nuanced portrayal of characters on the autism spectrum. Rachel’s work has received grants and support from The Sundance Institute, the Rooftop Film Festival, and the Princess Grace Foundation. She has taught filmmaking at Columbia University’s Graduate School of the Arts and Rhode Island School of Design. Rachel is currently in post-production on her 3rd feature, INFLUENCED, starring Jill Kargman (ODD MOM OUT), David Krumholtz, Justin Bartha, which was filmed in New York City.
