VGMP: Videogame Movie Podcast

Wing Commander

Season 5, Ep. 43

Based on the popular 1990s series of PC games, this science-fiction thriller stars 90s favourites Freddie Prinze Jr and Matthew Lillard in a story that feels like a mash-up of Top Gun and Starship Troopers. However, the film seems to be focusing its attention in the wrong areas. Tune in to this episode as Jamie and Rory discuss where the film goes wrong and how it could be fixed.

  • 55. Rampage

    55:19||Season 5, Ep. 55
    VGMP returns to take a look at this Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson vehicle from 2018 which sees the eyebrow-raising, elbow dropping superstar thrust into a battle between three heavily mutated kaiju-like monsters.
  • 54. DLC: Starcade (2019)

    14:46||Season 5, Ep. 54
    Jamie and Rory take a brief look at an internet comedy short that tells the story of two men engaged in a battle to top one another's high scores on a Pac-Man arcade cabinet.
  • 53. Retro: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show

    59:16||Season 5, Ep. 53
    The late 1980s saw videogame media making its first steps into the realm of film and television and usually the results were, at best, ill conceived. Like this show featuring former wrestler Lou Albano as Mario in live action segments interspersed between an animated cartoon. Various celebrities of the time guest star but the show is perhaps best remembered for its pseudo-rap opening theme set to the original theme of the game!
  • 52. DLC: Sonic Mania Adventures

    21:06||Season 5, Ep. 52
    A throwback to the classic early 90s animation style of the Sonic cartoon, Sonic Mania Adventures was a piece of tie-in media released alongside the popular retro-style game Sonic Mania.
  • 51. Gran Turismo

    01:10:38||Season 5, Ep. 51
    Loosely based on a true story; Gran Turismo tells the story of an outside-the-box marketing expert, a washed up race car driver and a teenager from the UK with big dreams who come together to try and pull off the ultimate brand cross over. To turn an adept player of Sony's Gran Turismo game (sorry, I mean "driving simulator") in a real life race car driver.
  • 50. DLC: Resident Evil: Wesker's Report

    18:13||Season 5, Ep. 50
    We're continuing to release our classic episodes and this one was certainly an odd one. Poor Rory fell ill one week and couldn't record and so Jamie decided to grab a mic and record thoughts on this strange piece of Resident Evil content that Capcom released alongside limited editions of Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X. Shining some light on the actions of the series signature villain Albert Wesker, is there's anything in Wesker's Report that is still worth seeing in 2024?
  • 49. Detective Pikachu

    01:14:11||Season 5, Ep. 49
    Jamie & Rory return to the Pokémon franchise as they review this Hollywood offering. Starring Deadpool (I mean, Ryan Reynolds) as Pikachu, Detective Pikachu was positively received on release but doesn't seem to have made an impact long term. Does it hold up a few years later?
  • 48. Borderlands

    01:16:33||Season 5, Ep. 48
    It's being decried as one of the worst movies of all time, reviving the long established "videogame movie curse" and some have even said it feels like an Uwe Boll film. So the question becomes; is Borderlands really as bad as everybody says it is? Joined by special guests, Jamie and Rory take a look at this hot new release to decide if the negative reaction is undeserved or if Borderlands really deserves to be consigned to the trash heap.
  • 47. Yakuza - Like A Dragon

    01:00:06||Season 5, Ep. 47
    This week the boys look at this adaptation by legendary Japanese director Takashi Miike of Sega's popular action RPG franchise. This is one of Rory's favourite franchises but will the movie stack up?
