Podcast Picks with Jim The Podcast Sherpa
True Crime Screening Room: Author Jonathan Dyer! (Featuring Book Contest)
Definitely a change of pace, as far as true crime episodes are concerned! Jonathan has lived an interesting life and has brought some truly fascinating and thrilling works to the reading public. Apologies for me sounding like I got electrocuted during the interview. (I didn't...it was after the interview.) But this story of Greg Scarpa is the stuff movies are made of, and I'm glad I got to talk to Jonathan about it. Thanks for coming on the show, Jonathan!

23. Radio Host Steven Phillips ( "The Morning Dish")!
28:19||Season 6, Ep. 23If you're looking online, good news, Rebels! You can still catch episodes of "The Morning Dish" with Steven and his cohorts! Plenty of good stuff awaiting in the radio airwaves. But check out this chat from a few years back. (Note: Although I've finally seen it, I still haven't tried Duke's mayonnaise yet.....)_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________--This was a fun one, Rebels. Not to humble-brag (too late!) , but it's such an honor that both radio guys who have been on my show had really nice things to say about this podcast Maybe I'm doing something right, finally? Or Dirty Louie is paying my guests well, out of the Sherpa Slush Fund (Financial disclosure: $14.38). Steven was a great guest and we talked about SO much in such a short time. AND even discussed cooking Spam. I never got to ask him how to fit my email in a frying pan. I'll figure it out, once I get that mayo. Thanks for coming by, Steven! 25. One Man Takes A Town UNDER SIEGE! with Author Howard Frank ("Lying In Wait")!
23:52||Season 15, Ep. 25You wouldn't think that an event like this was actually possible, and yet, for 48 days in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, this was a nightmare to law enforcement and the residents in the surrounding areas. In "Lying In Wait", Howard explores the terror that was inflicted on this area, along with explaining the mindset of a man dead set on waging war on his country. He even brought out a few points in the course of the interview about what we don't know what still lies out there. (And to be honest, none of these scary thoughts are enough to entice me to relax with a cup of tea and a few Mallomars. Maybe next month?) Anyway, please check out Howard Frank's book (link below!), as he describes true crime terror. Thanks for coming on the show. 21. Podcaster Mark Maloney ('Cabaret Cafe")!
41:33||Season 6, Ep. 21This one, Rebels, to be honest, falls more under the category of too much silly and not enough interview! Sadly, I couldn't find a single episode of Mark's podcast , past or present, anywhere! So check this one out, and laugh along!______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________SML ( So much laughing) episode?Okay, let's go to the checklist: Excessive laughing? Check. Slightly loud microphone? Check. A funny guest? Double check! Mark has lots of fun stories to tell in this episode, along with some interesting insights, too. Even though neither of us is really waiting for the Daddy Dewdrop reunion tour. But have a listen, and check out his podcast, too. Thanks for swinging by, Mark! (And apologies to the descendants of Karl Marx for my horrible impression. 24. Wanna Make A Podcast? Podcaster/Producer Chris Creary ("I Made A Podcast") is your go-to!
34:23||Season 15, Ep. 24Super-nice guest today, Rebels. Well, what do you expect? He's Canadian. They're always nice. That's what protects them from me crossing the border! Chris falls into my category of "new-old friends". The ones you just meet, but you feel like you've known them for a while, and they've already had the restraining order prepared. You get it. But if you want to start your own podcast, check out, "I Made A Podcast. If you're spiritual, check out 'Faith Fight." And if both, just click on the links below! Thanks for coming on the show, Chris!**Please note: Chris' last name is Creary, not "Cready", which the Sherpa and his AI mispronounced. In order to rectify that, Chris, and only Chris, can refer to him as "the Poodcast Shoopa". We figure it's only fair......Chris' faves: I Made A Podcast, First Take, Social Proof, Pablo Torre Finds OutChris' info: https://linktr.ee/PodcastproductionlabsYour link to podcast readiness is here! https://podcast-readiness-assessment.lovable.app/Catch "Sherpa Selects" on Saturdays. 19. Jazz Trombonist & Singer, Aubrey Logan! ("Standard")
01:04:39||Season 6, Ep. 19A fun one, with a super-nice artist! From what I understand, Aubrey took a little time off and had a baby, but has put some new music out, with her (new?) band. If you're YouTube surfing, do yourself a favor and check out her cover of Miami Sound Machine's "Anything For You". Trust me, you'll love it!_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Another episode in my never-ending pursuit to bring all music to the masses! Or something like that. You can just tell how much fun it was to talk to Aubrey. Before our interview, I had commented to her that she sent me down a rabbit hole, because I'd never known of many female jazz trombonists. Well, let me tell you Rebels, there are plenty, and, as Aubrey explained, "And, we all know each other!" You gotta love speaking to anyone who can give you an answer like that. I think she's the first guest I've interviewed to have the last laugh on Simon Cowell. That is, unless you don't count the guy who was on bedpan duty when he was in the hospital. (Never mind, I've said too much.) Anyway, have a listen to the interview, and the featured music, and go check out her website, buy her music, and see her in concert. Thanks so much to Aubrey and her management team. Long live the Queen of Sass! These are the songs featured in today's interview, with Aubrey's permission, alternately from the albums, "Where the Sunshine Is Expensive" and "Standard":UnderstandDoxology/ Before the Throne of God AboveLALouboutins 2.0High PlaceDone PretendingFollow the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram at @Sherpalution, and check out my website, sherpalution.com , for older episodes, Sherpa Sheets, and Spotify playlists. 23. What Makes a Serial Killer? With Author Heather Mroczenski ("Blueprint Of A Killer")!
25:16||Season 15, Ep. 23It's amazing what someone can do with their skills and apply it to a fascination with true crime! Heather certainly made use of her skills and has honed a fascinating read from that fascination. All while she's doing the good work with autistic children. Hmmm, if there were only something I could do for the true crime world....nope, couldn't come up with an idea. But have a listen to this episode while I try to figure it out. 18. Podcaster/ Entrepreneur Michael Stein ("Long Shot Leaders")
41:27||Season 6, Ep. 18I'm happy to let you know that you can STILL catch new episodes of "Long Shot Leaders" on your favorite podcast apps. Well, why wouldn't a podcast about resilience NOT be around, right? He was a really nice guest, so check this one out...it's very inspiring!_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________I hope that when you, dear listeners, hear interviews, like today's chat with Michael, keep in mind that there is always hope even when things may seem to be at their most dire or bleak. It's certainly not the easiest thing to focus on in hard times, but trust me, it's there. Just have a listen to Michael's show, and that idea is confirmed.Plus, he brings a level of empathy and relatability, through the events in his own personal life. 17. Podcaster "Big Skinny" Kenney Pope ("Casual Conversations")!
36:24||Season 6, Ep. 17Nowadays, the Big Skinny man has been hosting YouTube videos spotlighting barbecuing. (And he's gotten skinnier...go figure!)But you know, that's gotta be yummy...nothing better than Texas barbecue, right? But check out his tales of radio and podcasting here!____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________After over 140 episodes, I'm surprised that I haven't spoken to to more podcasters with radio backgrounds, with of course, the exception being the brilliant Mr. Bruce (or Uncle Bruce, if you're listening to our "Too Many 80's Songs" mini-podcast on Spotify....and why aren't you?? Either way, the check is in the mail.) But Big Skinny definitely has that classic country music radio voice. Certainly not one that you'd confuse with the BBC. He's definitely a down-to- earth Texan who just has such a love for a lot of the music that we both grew up on. Which is why it's so easy to have a "Casual Conversation" with him. By the way, Big Skinny did the recording of our interview, and I did the mixing and editing on it. I felt it really sounded like we were in the same room, and I almost sounded like I did back in my college radio days, where my show would regularly finish behind static in the ratings.
