Clarifications on School Principal's Hiring
01:42|Corrections and Clarifications: Lizcett Porrass Hiring Last month, we shared a story about Lizcett Porras, the principal at a troubled school in the South Bay. Were now issuing corrections to set the record straight on a few important points. First, we incorrectly stated that a district official named Romero was fired. He actually resigned, with a unanimous school board trustees approval on December seventeenth. The resignation agreement included an undisclosed severance payment, but no specific reason was given. The investigation leading up to his resignation focused on after-hours use of a football field by a nonprofit youth flag football league, where Romero volunteers as a coach. This had nothing to do with Porras, hiring practices, or any issues in the districts human resources department. We also want to clarify that the district found no wrongdoing by Romero. He was placed on administrative leave to protect the football field investigation, not because of a separate audit that flagged problems in human resources hiring and record-keeping. All information about Porrass hiring is still accurate. She didnt meet the minimum qualifications, went through a multi-step interview, and had a connection to Romeros wife. But our story didnt mean to suggest Romero improperly influenced her selection. His attorney confirmed he stayed out of it. Weve updated the original piece and regret any confusion. Newsom Proposes Shakeup of California Education Leadership
01:37|Governor Newsom Proposes Shake-up in Californias Education Leadership In his State of the State address, Governor Gavin Newsom proposed a significant change in Californias education governance. He suggested moving oversight of the Department of Education from the elected State Superintendent Tony Thurmond to the State Board of Education, which he appoints. This move aims to streamline the states complex school governance system, currently divided among the governor, legislature, state board, superintendent, and local school boards. The proposal has sparked controversy. Thurmond and his team strongly oppose it, arguing it would disrupt progress and divert attention from student needs. They advocate for increased funding for underfunded schools instead. Education advocacy groups, however, support the plan, citing the need to clarify a century-old confusing setup. Critics like attorney John Affeldt express concern about the potential shift of power from voters to the governor, which could pose risks if future leaders dont prioritize public schools. The future of the proposal and Thurmonds response remain uncertain. Checkout Solipillow.com
