Tangle
Trump’s immigration actions.
Since taking office, President Donald Trump has issued a series of executive orders on immigration, which the White House says is part of its effort to establish firmer control over the southern U.S. border. Many of the actions are targeted at unauthorized migrants, but others have restricted legal immigration pathways, including orders to indefinitely pause the U.S. refugee admissions program, end parole programs, and shut down the CBP One app for asylum seekers.

26:05|As part of the Tangle ethos, we solicit reader questions about politics and our work every day in our newsletter. And every few months, so many questions pile up on the back end that we decide to answer a bunch of them at once in a members-only reader mailbag. Today is one of those days. We think this is a healthy exercise that not only allows us to critically examine some of our own writing, but also provides readers with more perspectives that help us fulfill our core mission. If you want to read more about what we’re building here, two weeks ago we wrote about the whole point of Tangle. As always, we want to thank those of you who write in with thoughtful questions or raise challenging criticisms that help us improve. We hope you enjoy today’s mailbag! This is a preview of today's special edition that is available in full and ad-free for our premium podcast subscribers. 27:41|The budget resolution and potential government shutdown. On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to fund the government through September 30 in a 217–213 vote. The spending package would extend much of current federal funding until the end of the fiscal year, with a $6 billion increase in defense spending and a $13 billion decrease in nondefense spending. The bill passed mostly along party lines, with Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) joining Republicans to vote in favor and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) joining Democrats in dissent. Now, the bill moves to the Senate, where it must garner 60 votes in order to pass by Friday to avert a government shutdown. 29:48|On Tuesday, President Donald Trump threatened to double his planned tariffs on all Canadian steel and aluminum imports from 25% to 50%. Trump’s announcement followed Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s decision to impose a 25% surcharge on electricity the province supplies to 1.5 million American homes and businesses in response to Trump’s tariff threats. However, on Wednesday, Ford announced he would suspend the electricity surcharge after agreeing with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick to discuss a renewed United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) on trade. The announcement prompted Trump to rescind his threat to double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. 28:34|On Friday, the Trump administration announced it will cut $400 million in federal funding to Columbia University in New York City for allegedly failing to protect Jewish students from harassment. Additionally, the administration has directed the Departments of Education, Justice, and Health and Human Services to form a Federal Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism and investigate participants in pro-Palestinian protests on campuses last year. On Saturday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a recent Columbia graduate student and U.S. resident from Palestine, on State Department orders to revoke Khalil’s student visa. When ICE discovered through his attorney that Khalil had a green card, they told him they would revoke that instead. Khalil has not been formally accused of a crime.Ad-free podcasts are here! Many listeners have been asking for an ad-free version of this podcast that they could subscribe to — and we finally launched it. Shortly thereafter, China imposed up to 15% tariffs on some U.S. imports, and Canada issued a 25% levy. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that Mexico would issue tariffs on U.S. goods by this Sunday but did not offer specifics.
