On Sunday, Mexican security forces killed cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes — known as “El Mencho” — and multiple others in a military operation assisted by U.S. intelligence in Tapalpa, Jalisco, in Western Mexico. Oseguera was wounded in a violent clash with Mexican special forces and died while being flown to Mexico City. In response to the killing, shootouts, explosions, and over 250 vehicle blockades and arson attacks spread across Jalisco, as well as the nearby states of Michoacán, Guanajuato, Colima, and Tamaulipas. Follow the State of the Union live with Tangle. Tonight, President Donald Trump will deliver the first official State of the Union address of his second term. On Friday, the Supreme Court voted 6–3 to strike down most of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, finding that the president exceeded his authority when he imposed duties under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). This month, the artificial intelligence discourse hit a new fever pitch.It started with a viral post on X, titled “Something Big Is Happening,” which racked up tens of millions of views. The post was written by Matt Shumer, the CEO of the AI personal assistant company HyperWrite. It’s long, but it’s worth your time. The thrust of the post is this: Artificial intelligence is improving much faster than most anyone seems to understand, and the rate of improvement is accelerating. Last Wednesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 130,000 in January, its strongest monthly growth in over a year, while the unemployment rate fell from 4.4% to 4.3%. The healthcare sector accounted for most of the growth with 82,000 new jobs, but declining employment in state and federal governments, finance, and the information sector offset some of those gains. On Thursday, February 12, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin announced that the agency had rescinded the “endangerment finding,” a 16-year-old determination that allowed past administrations to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. The EPA previously said that it would pursue curtailing the rule in July, claiming that the deregulation would save the auto industry an expected $54 billion. Three years ago, I had a fun idea for Valentine’s Day: I would bring my wife Phoebe on the Tangle podcast.My idea was that the two of us could sit down, have a glass of wine, and talk about our lives, Tangle, Phoebe’s first year of law school, a little bit of politics, and have a few good laughs. But, as I probably should have expected, the show took on some more depth. We got very personal. We talked about the challenges of our relationship, of our move from New York to Philly, and of trying to bounce back in the post-Covid world.Immediately after publishing the episode, I was inundated with emails from people saying how much they loved the episode, how candid it was, and how interesting my very smart and quick-witted wife was as a guest. So, in 2024, we did it again. And then again in 2025. And now, in 2026, with the fourth-ever Valentine’s Day podcast, I think we can officially call it a tradition.Last year, when we recorded the podcast, we were less than a month into having our first child, and Phoebe was entering her last semester of law school. This year, we discussed Phoebe’s experience so far as a public defender, her thoughts on cash bail, what has surprised her about the job, how she feels defending people guilty of real crimes, and what being a mom and an attorney is like. We then shared our favorite things about our son and some nice things about each other (because it’s Valentine’s Day, after all).
