The dockworkers go on strike.

The dockworkers’ strike. On Tuesday, thousands of longshoremen and port operators along the East Coast and Gulf Coast went on strike after their union, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), failed to reach an agreement with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) on a new contract. The ILA, which represents over 45,000 workers, is asking for higher wages for its members and protections against port automation projects. The strike is the first large-scale work stoppage for dockworkers in nearly 50 years and has halted nearly all activity at some of the busiest ports in the United States.

  • The Friday Edition - Can Kamala Harris win? And 25 closing thoughts on the election.

    06:26|
A couple weeks ago, I made my final predictions about the 2024 election. In that post, one of my headline predictions was that Vice President Kamala Harris would win Pennsylvania but lose the election. I also argued that Trump had a path to winning in Michigan, that Democrats would win the House, and that Republicans would come away with 53 seats in the Senate.Since then, the race hasn’t fundamentally changed, but it has developed in a lot of interesting ways. I’ve been jotting down notes over the last few weeks and today, I’m emptying my notebook as we head into the final days of the race. So: Here are 25 thoughts with four days to go until Election Day. • Harris’s closing argument

    26:43|
On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a speech at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., that was billed as the closing argument of her campaign. Harris delivered the speech at the same site as former President Donald Trump’s address to his supporters on January 6, 2021, which preceded their march to the U.S. Capitol. Harris’s campaign chair, Jen O'Malley Dillon, said the location of the address was meant to “crystallize the choice in this election” for voters. Ad-free podcasts are here! Many listeners have been asking for an ad-free version of this podcast that they could subscribe to — and we finally launched it. • Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally

    25:16|
On Sunday, October 27, former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump held a rally at a sold-out Madison Square Garden in New York City. Although Trump will be holding a series of rallies — mostly in swing states — for the next week, the event at Madison Square Garden was his last major event with a full complement of guest speakers before Election Day.Ad-free podcasts are here! Many listeners have been asking for an ad-free version of this podcast that they could subscribe to — and we finally launched it. • National newspapers decide not to endorse.

    29:53|
On Friday, The Washington Post announced it would not endorse a presidential candidate in this year's election and would continue to forgo presidential endorsements in the future. Will Lewis, the paper's publisher, announced the decision in a column that described the non-endorsement as a return to the paper's pre-1970s tradition. Ad-free podcasts are here! Many listeners have been asking for an ad-free version of this podcast that they could subscribe to — and we finally launched it. • The presidential race in Michigan

    26:09|
A week out from Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are neck and neck in the critical battleground state. Harris held a moderate polling lead over Trump in Michigan after she replaced President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket, but FiveThirtyEight’s polling average now has her leading by just 0.4 points. Harris’s struggles are due in part to declining support among Arab American voters in Michigan, who have been critical of the Biden administration’s handling of the war in Gaza.Ad-free podcasts are here! Many listeners have been asking for an ad-free version of this podcast that they could subscribe to — and we finally launched it.
