On Tuesday night, President Donald Trump delivered the first State of the Union address of his second term (Trump addressed a joint session of Congress last year, but it was not an official State of the Union). During the speech, Trump focused predominantly on domestic issues, but said that he would “never” allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. One year ago, we wrapped up a months-long series following five undecided voters across the country — people who, like millions of Americans, were trying to sort through the noise of a divisive, turbulent election at a moment when trust in institutions was fraying, norms were being tested, and the stakes of the decision felt unusually and perilously high.From March of 2024 until the week of the election, we followed their reactions to criminal trials, assassination attempts, debate meltdowns, convention chaos, and a last-minute change at the top of the Democratic ticket. On Sunday, Mexican security forces killed cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes — known as “El Mencho” — and multiple others in a military operation assisted by U.S. intelligence in Tapalpa, Jalisco, in Western Mexico. Oseguera was wounded in a violent clash with Mexican special forces and died while being flown to Mexico City. On Friday, the Supreme Court voted 6–3 to strike down most of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, finding that the president exceeded his authority when he imposed duties under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). This month, the artificial intelligence discourse hit a new fever pitch.It started with a viral post on X, titled “Something Big Is Happening,” which racked up tens of millions of views. The post was written by Matt Shumer, the CEO of the AI personal assistant company HyperWrite. It’s long, but it’s worth your time. The thrust of the post is this: Artificial intelligence is improving much faster than most anyone seems to understand, and the rate of improvement is accelerating. Last Wednesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 130,000 in January, its strongest monthly growth in over a year, while the unemployment rate fell from 4.4% to 4.3%. The healthcare sector accounted for most of the growth with 82,000 new jobs, but declining employment in state and federal governments, finance, and the information sector offset some of those gains.
