On April 10, the House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a bill requiring proof of citizenship for voters to register for federal elections. The bill passed the House 220–208, with all Republicans and four Democrats in favor. House Republicans attempted to pass the SAVE Act in September 2024 as part of a government-funding bill, but the chamber voted 220–202 against that version of the bill.
The SAVE Act must secure at least 60 votes in the Senate to meet the filibuster threshold, meaning seven Democrats would have to join all Republicans to pass it. So far, Democratic leaders have urged members to vote against the bill.

Porn age-verification law upheld by Supreme Court.
27:12|On June 27, the Supreme Court voted 6–3 to uphold a Texas law requiring pornography websites to verify the age of their visitors. The law, HB 1181, compels sites that contain more than one-third “sexual material harmful to minors” to use “reasonable age verification methods” (such as government identification or other personal documents) to determine whether users are over the age of 18. The challengers argued the law violates the First Amendment by creating an unfair free-speech burden on adults. 29:59|On Friday, flash flooding caused catastrophic damage in Texas Hill Country, a region of Central and South Texas, killing at least 89 people. As of Monday morning, at least 41 people are still missing, and rescue operations remain underway. The majority of the fatalities occurred in Kerr County, where 75 deaths have been reported. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said that the Guadalupe River rose about 26 feet in 45 minutes Friday morning, and the city of Kerrville said the river reached its second-highest height on record. 36:05|On Tuesday, following a marathon all-night voting session, the Republicans’ taxation and spending bill passed the Senate 51–50 on a tie-breaking vote from Vice President JD Vance. Republican Senators Rand Paul (KY), Thom Tillis (NC), and Susan Collins (ME) joined every Democratic senator in voting no; all other Republican senators voted yes. The bill — known as the One Big, Beautiful Bill (or OBBB) — originally passed the House 215–214 on May 22, but due to changes in the Senate, it now requires another majority vote in the lower chamber before it can be sent to President Donald Trump for approval. 31:06|On Friday, the Supreme Court voted 6–3 in favor of a group of Maryland parents who had wanted to opt their elementary-aged children out of instruction that included LGBTQ+ themes. The majority agreed to grant the parents a preliminary injunction while their lawsuit proceeds in lower courts, allowing them to withhold their children from such curriculum. 31:19|On Friday, the Supreme Court voted 6–3 to partially pause rulings by federal judges blocking President Donald Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship. The decision did not weigh the constitutionality of the executive order but dealt solely with federal courts issuing universal injunctions, which prohibit the government from enforcing a law or policy anywhere in the country. The court’s majority repudiated such orders but left open the possibility that lawsuits brought by states could challenge Trump’s executive order. 29:22|Following a meeting of the Senate Finance Committee on Sunday, Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough advised that several measures in the “Big Beautiful Bill” fail the Byrd Rule and cannot be included in Republicans’ omnibus spending and taxation bill under budget reconciliation. Among the measures MacDonough identified are provisions barring certain noncitizens from receiving benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), requiring the U.S. Postal Service to sell its electric vehicles, reducing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s funding to zero, and forcing the federal government to sell public lands.
