Episode 188: Legend Has It
This week we sat down with Wisconsin horror author and all-around nice guy DJ Slater. DJ has a horror novel coming out September 16th, 2025 called Legend Has it. Full details about the book and all information about DJ can be found at DJSlaterAuthor.com.
The story sounds like a great one:
"Seth and his friends have always heard about a legendary 10-story haunted house that travels around the Midwest every October. It's one of those haunted houses that really pushes the limits. You even have to sign a waiver! But is this traveling haunted house just an urban legend? Well, maybe. But then how do Seth and his friends wind up on its doorstep? And what horrors will they discover inside?"
We talked to DJ about his writing process, his love of the horror genre, and living in Wisconsin. Take a listen and check out his book when it drops on September 16th, 2025.

Stage Fright - SlashU "Held Back"
01:27:01|Original Air Date: 6/19/2023This week on "Held Back" we re-visit our class on "Stage Fright" from 2014. There are a lot of movies called "Stage Fright" so make sure you are watching the 2014 movie for this episode to make sense. It was the first musical slasher we covered here at SlashU and it starred the legendary Meat Loaf! The story centers around a theater camp that's terrorized by a killer who hates musical theater. But the irony is that whenever the killer is on screen, there's heavy metal music and he's singing!Listen, tell a friend, rate the show! It really helps us out.
216. Episode 216: Deadly Detention
56:10||Season 12, Ep. 216This week we got sent to detention. But not just any detention, it's "Deadly Detention" from 2017. When "The Breakfast Club" meets a slasher movie, this is what you get. And we had no shortage of thoughts about it. For some reason, the story centers around a group of high school kids serving up a Saturday detention sentence in an abandoned correctional facility instead of their school. The movie attempts to explain it and you can decide if you like how they set this one up. We sure didn't. And we had a blast talking about it. Listen, enjoy, tell a friend.
The Prowler - Slash U "Held Back"
01:17:10|Original Air Date: 6/7/2021This week on "Held Back" we drop back to Season 2 of SlashU where we covered "The Prowler" from 1981. This one was a lot of fun with some great special effects. Listen, enjoy, tell a friend and rate the show!
215. Episode 215: Screamtime
57:08||Season 12, Ep. 215This week we went back to our 80s roots to watch an Anthology-style horror movie. It's "Screamtime" from 1983. This one's simple. A couple guys steal some VHS tapes, go to a friend's apartment to watch them, and we as the audience get to enjoy 3 different mini-movies. It's not a bad little low-budget British horror flick. Listen, enjoy, tell your friends, rate the show, and tell us what you think. Thanks!
American Gothic - SlashU "Held Back"
01:18:53|Original Air Date 2/7/2022This week on "Held Back" we're revisiting a movie from 1987. The story centers around a group of travelers who find themselves stranded on an island in the Pacific Northwest after their seaplane has to make an emergency landing. They stumble upon a family of psychotic killers and the rest is all for us to enjoy! Thanks for taking our class again on this classic.Tell your friends and enjoy!
214. Episode 214: New Fears Eve
01:05:00||Season 12, Ep. 214This week we covered one from 2025 that left us absolutely floored with the number of practical effects and the 'kill count.' It's non-stop slasher madness from "New Fears Eve." We had hoped to talk a little bit with the writer/director PJ Starks but after a couple of different attempts, our schedules just could not line up. At the end of the day, we still had fun. The story in this one centers around the employees of Hooper Industries. They are compelled to attend the company's New Years Eve party despite the fact that a bunch of them are getting laid off due to budget cuts. And a killer in a plague-era doctor's mask is stalking the party. This one sets up nicely for a sequel and we are definitely on board for that!Listen, tell a friend, and enjoy!
Sweet Sixteen - SlashU "Held Back"
01:29:02|Original Air Date 9/13/2021This week on "Held Back" we're jumping all the way back to Season 3 of SlashU when we covered "Sweet Sixteen" from 1983. There was some strange stuff in this movie. For example, an actress has a nude scene, the actress is of course over eighteen years old but the character is only sixteen....as the title of the movie indicates. It's just one of the many examples of how different things were back in the 80s. Listen, enjoy!
Friday the 13th - SlashU "Held Back"
01:07:57|Original Air Date 8/23/2024We had to call an audible this week due to some scheduling mix-ups. But we'll be back on track quickly, don't worry. So we decided to re-visit a classic in honor of Mother's Day. We're going back to the original "bad mom" by revisiting "Friday the 13th" from 1980. The one where most of the slasher madness began. Listen, tell a friend, rate the show, and enjoy!
Hatchet - SlashU "Held Back"
01:13:12|Original Air Date: 4/25/2022This week on SlashU Held Back we're re-visiting 2006's "Hatchet." It's an amazing nod to old-school campy over-the-top slasher movies. Victor Crowley stalks Honey Island Swamp and anyone who invades his territory meets a gruesome death. It's the first in the "Hatchet" series, and we covered them all here on SlashU. We're eagerly awaiting more! Listen, tell a friend, rate the show and enjoy!
