Moment #69: Are You a Transformational Leader?

Moment #69 // Virtually every senior leader finds themself executing a major change or transformation program at some point in their career.

It’s easy to get caught up in the hype – expensive consultants telling you what needs to be done… teams drowning in PowerPoint decks that explain the change… and a whole bunch of traffic light reports to convince you that what you’re doing is working.

I’m a simple man, and I like simple metrics. My favorite change barometer is, “How much push back am I getting from the old guard? Because they’re the people who want the world to stay exactly the way it was before I turned up?

If it’s too quiet, then I know that nothing is really changing.

If you want to take a deeper dive into what it means to drive real change, have a listen to Ep.66: No Noise = No Change.

  • 303. Navigating Wicked Problems: Compartmentalization is key

    20:11
Episode #303 // We know that problem solving is a critical part of leadership life — we spend a lot of time on any given day solving our own problems, and helping our people to solve theirs. As you’ve no doubt learned, though, there are problems and there are… problems. It’s important to know how to leverage good problem solving techniques. But it’s equally important to manage your head space so that your biggest leadership problems don’t take over your whole life. Wicked problems don’t come along every day but, when they do, they can totally dominate your emotional and psychological reactions to virtually everything. Being able to compartmentalize will help you to keep things in perspective. You can’t let your biggest leadership problems consume you to the point where they detract from your ability to function properly, and enjoy the other aspects of your life. In this episode, I explore the concept of wicked problems. I give a detailed example of the most wicked problem I faced as a CEO, and I finish with an extensive range of advice for compartmentalizing, so that you can cope with whatever problems come your way.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • Moment #73: Leading People To Do the Sh!t Work

    04:46
Moment #73 // I talk a lot about high performance. But what about the people who find themselves doing relatively mundane, repetitive, or low-skilled jobs?We tend to imagine occupations like cleaners, fruit pickers, and production line workers when we think about mundane jobs. But many people in your team could also be doing some mind-numbing work, to fulfill the less-glamorous requirements of their role.In this Moment, I give you my six hot tips for leading people to do the sh!t jobs.If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can motivate your people to excel in the mundane and uninteresting, have a listen to Ep.151: Motivating Process Workers.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • 302. 7 Big Culture Killers: Don’t let mediocrity destroy performance

    18:09
Episode #302 // One of our dedicated listeners, Jonathan, observed that a number of culture killers can be described by words that end with the suffix, “-ism”. He rattled off a couple to get me started — nepotism, narcissism, and favoritism. He suggested that I should create a podcast episode based on these, and other “-isms” that negatively impact team culture and productivity, so I’ve come up with my list of seven big culture killers. This episode’s pretty straightforward — I explain each term, and the nuances of the impact it has on team culture, which is antithetical to high performance. Any conscious effort you put into creating a constructive, high-performance culture will be silently undermined by these seven deadly sins. This can leave you feeling frustrated, wondering why your best efforts aren’t getting any traction. But it’s incredibly easy to turn a blind eye to these culture killers, especially if they were existing cultural norms when you took over the team in the first place.————————Struggling with tough conversations? • Moment #72: Leading In Organization-Induced Chaos

    04:58
Moment #72 // It is common in most larger organizations to restructure from time to time, even though these restructures are often ill-conceived. Any value they might yield is dwarfed by the disruption, cost, and uncertainty they create.Regardless, you may well be in a position where you have to execute on management intent, which means telling a bunch of people that their roles have been made redundant. In this Moment, I give you my 9 top tips for getting this right. If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can navigate the toughest of all execution imperatives, have a listen to Ep.64: Restructures and Redundancies————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • 301. Bouncing Back From Major Failures: Not all mistakes are equal

    15:10
Episode 301 // A lot has been written and said over the years about the necessary role that failure plays in our quest for success. Anyone who has ever been successful, first had to endure (and bounce back from) failure! It’s easy to reduce this process to a few pithy sayings:“Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly!” (John F Kennedy)“Failure is another stepping stone to greatness” (Oprah Winfrey)“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)These are all true… and, let’s face it, I’m a big fan of a good mantra to help me keep my head in the right space. Then again, there are failures, and there are… failures! Making the little daily mistakes, learning from them, and correcting them is a part and parcel of your growth and development, in any walk of life. If you’re a regular No Bullsh!t Leadership listener, you’ve probably already got a pretty good handle on this process. But there are two situations where this doesn’t necessarily hold true:When you keep making the same mistake repeatedly; orWhen the failure is so big that it has a deeper effect on your psyche Both scenarios can cause you to lose a tremendous amount of confidence, so working out how to come back from these failures is much harder… and much more important!————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • Moment #71: How To Make YOUR Project Fail Proof

    05:12
Episode #71 // How often do we hear leaders claim that their project was delivered “on time, and on budget”. This is often wildly misleading, because it depends on your reference point. They often neglect to mention how many project delays and budget blowouts occurred before the final targets were set… and they rarely talk about all the features that had to be removed as the project scope shrunk to fit the envelope of available money and time. This Moment gives you an overview of the 7 things you need to do to make your projects fail proof. If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can achieve predictable success with your next big project, have a listen to Ep.89: Are ALL Projects Doomed?————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • 300. Humor is ESSENTIAL: How to keep it light!

    21:29
Episode #300 // “If you can look on the light side of any crisis, remain positive and optimistic, and crack a joke or two, you'll be in a much better place to deal with whatever comes your way.”Looking back on 300 episodes of No Bullsh!t Leadership, I’m incredibly proud of the body of knowledge that Em and I have created to help leaders all over the world to become better.I’m also humbled that each of you tune in, week after week, putting in the hard yards to improve your leadership capability and confidence…using the tools and strategies to improve the way you lead. The impact you’re having on the world by leveraging our content is incalculable.I thought pretty carefully about what topic I would choose to mark this milestone, and decided it was time to revisit an important piece of the leadership puzzle, which is often overlooked. About 3 years ago, I released Ep.145: Humor is Underrated. In today’s episode, I upgrade that assessment… I think that, these days, humor has become essential. Even in the last 3 years, our collective senses of humor seem to have been further stifled, and we’re in imminent danger of completely losing the value of humor in the workplace. Today, I give you five compelling reasons why you need to fight to keep the arrow of humor in your own leadership quiver! • Moment #70: What Can Hindsight Teach Us?

    05:28
Moment #70 // There are any number of life lessons that I could absolutely have used earlier on, and lots of stuff that would have made me a better leader way sooner. But, then again, with the benefit of hindsight and wisdom, I’ve come to realize that the depth and value of any lesson comes from the very fact that it’s hard fought and won.If you learn by starting in the right place, going through the trial and error, (and, yes, a little of the essential pain), the lessons you learn stay learned... they are indelibly imprinted on your psyche. If you want to hear my 7 life lessons, as well as the 2 critical leadership skills I developed later than I should have, listen to Ep.259: Things I Wish I’d Learned Earlier.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • 299. Setting a Higher Standard: How everyone benefits!

    20:15
Episode 299 // “When you try to protect your people by setting a lower standard, you effectively rob them of their opportunity to improve, to thrive, and to build their confidence and self-esteem.” Occasionally, I throw in a myth busting episode to challenge conventional leadership wisdom. This is my way of helping you to adopt the essential mindset of a truly successful leader. One of the broadly accepted leadership myths is that any focus on individual performance detracts from the needs, wants, and (dare I say it) entitlements of your people. This is complete bullsh!t… Conventional wisdom encourages us to let people work to their own capability and capacity, and not put any performance pressure on them… but this is a recipe for disaster, in so many ways! Not only is it bad for the team and the organization — it’s also bad for the individuals who are struggling to perform! In this episode, I put forward the case for setting a higher standard — not just to achieve better results, but also to do the very best you can to help the people who work for you! I look at some unlikely examples, from the decline in educational standards in the US, to the fall of communist Russia. Everyone benefits from higher standards!————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
