Is Faster Always Better?

Season 1, Ep. 294

Episode #294 // “If you can create a culture that values momentum, you will almost always outperform teams that don't!”

I often talk about the need for speed. As a leader, placing a premium on forward progress is one of the most reliable tools you have to achieve execution excellence in your team.

If you can create a culture that values momentum, you will almost always outperform teams that don’t.

Teams that don’t value speed just seem to stagnate. I’ve seen lots of them over the years, and whenever that level of stagnation is present, it’s generally accompanied by other undesirable characteristics, like:

  • A high level of conservatism
  • A perfectionistic culture
  • Low productivity
  • Lack of challenge between team members
  • Knowledge hoarding
  • Lack of initiative and innovation
  • Decision-making by consensus
  • Over-indexing on process, and under-indexing on results

That’s why I was interested to read an article a little while back in the Wall Street Journal, which was titled, Why Bosses Should Tell Employees to Slow Down More Often.

It led me to wonder if there’s a case for deliberately slowing the tempo of the team, and under what circumstances that might make sense?

In this episode, I share some of my experiences on the virtues of speed, momentum, and forward progress. I take a good look at the findings of the WSJ article. And I offer my suggestions for the areas where I think speed is essential, and where it might be better to tell your team to back off and cool their jets.

  • 308. Responding In Pivotal Moments: The principles of mastery

    18:24
Episode #308 // It’s pretty rare that you’re faced with a decision that’s final or irreversible. And when one comes along, it’s normally pretty easy to recognize — you can sense the gravity of the moment, and the potential consequences that lie ahead. But, as I look back on my experiences, some of the most significant decisions I’ve ever made, in terms of my life direction, didn’t seem to be that big a deal at the time. I made them using a liberal dose of gut feel, not suspecting for a moment how consequential they would ultimately turn out to be.I recently had occasion to think about one of the most pivotal moments in Emma’s life, which also had a profound effect on mine. For those of you who don’t know, Em is my daughter. She’s also the producer of the No Bullsh!t Leadership podcast, and CEO of our business, Your CEO Mentor. I was reflecting on the path that led us to where we are now, and it took me back to a brief but pivotal moment which, to tell you the truth, could have gone either way. This episode is packed with examples, including Em’s story. I hope that it helps you to recognize these unexpected moments when they arrive in your career, and to respond accordingly. You can never know, at the time, how critical these decisions will be… which is why you have to be prepared for every moment!————————YOU'RE INVITED TO: THE 10X YOUR LEADERSHIP PROMOTABILITY BOOTCAMPRUNNING FROM: 6-8 August, 2024Join my free LIVE 3-session bootcamp where I’ll share 3 proven strategies to accelerate your career advancement.Don’t miss out on this opportunity to unlock your potential and secure your next promotion. • Moment #78: Don't Fall In Love With Family Culture

    05:01
Moment #78 // Most successful founders face a problem as their business grows: the attributes that made them successful in the first place (e.g. innovation, hard work, tenacity, sales skills etc.) become obstacles to future performance. Many unintentionally create a family culture. This might feel really nice, but it’s often mutually exclusive with the disciplined, constructive culture that ultimately underpins exceptional performance.Whether you’re a business owner, or just trying to work out how to improve your team’s performance, don’t let a family culture impede your success. If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can avoid the performance pitfalls of a family culture, have a listen to Ep.76: The Family Affair and Ep.180: The Family Culture.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? • 307. How to Build Confidence Quickly...for you AND your people!

    20:02
Episode #307 // There’s a lot to be said for having confidence. It’s an essential ingredient for any leader who aspires to lift their people to greater heights.Without confidence, it’s difficult to effectively execute on even the most fundamental tasks that competent leadership requires.Confidence is incredibly valuable… and you can’t fake it!But, I feel as though it’s been getting a bad rap lately — confidence comes with a range of negative connotations, and those who are less confident often mistake it for insincerity, bluster, or even the inappropriate use of power. My observation, made over many years operating at the highest levels, is that confidence is an essential ingredient of high performance leadership. This is why it’s so important to focus on your own level of confidence, to understand what you need to do to increase it, and to know how to keep the dark side of confidence at bay.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? • Moment #77: Don't Let Unconscious Biases Rule You

    05:07
Moment #77 // We’re all driven, to a greater or lesser extent, by unconscious biases. These invisible forces hijack our cognitive processes, and impair our decision-making capacity. The only way to break free from the bonds of unconscious bias is to develop an acute awareness of the ones that affect you… especially when the pressure is on!In this Moment, I look at five of the most common biases that I see play out, even in the most intelligent, capable, experienced executives I work with.If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can avoid the fallacy of subconscious bias, have a listen to Ep.192: Avoiding Common Biases.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • 306. The DNA of Peak Performance: Learning from the best

    19:28
Episode #306 // I’ve always been fascinated by people who transcend the limits of human performance, in any field. They lead the way, expanding our perspective on what’s possible and giving us something to aspire to.When we look at the microcosm of our own team’s performance, we are the ones who get to choose the standard, so it’s useful to reflect on what each of us perceives to be exceptional performance. Unfortunately, so many leaders bandy around the term “high performance” that it’s at risk of becoming a meaningless cliché.How do we give ourselves a reality check? What do we use as a benchmark? How do we calibrate our efforts and set our own sights on what we might consider to be superior performance?Stopping every so often to take a few deep breaths and look at what the best of the best are doing in their quest to achieve world class performance helps us to calibrate our own standards. In this episode, I take a closer look at some of the truly exceptional performers who have redefined what’s possible — and I give you some step-by-step, practical guidance that you can action immediately, in order to move just that little bit closer to true leadership performance.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • Moment #76: Building a Team that Outlasts Others

    04:30
Moment #76 // If you want to build a team that outlasts others, you need each and every individual to be comfortable under pressure. And this starts with you. You set the tone for what happens in times of stress, pressure, and crisis. It’s important to show your people the way, leading by example… but the prescription for them is exactly the same as it is for you. The golden rule is - Don’t let your people avoid adversity – build it into their day!In this Moment, I give you 5 key tips to build the resilience that will enable your team to perform consistently, even under extreme pressure. If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can build a team that will outlast others, have a listen to Ep.77: Can Your Team Handle the Pressure?.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • 305. Should Leaders Buy Into Social Issues? Dodging the landmines

    24:03
Episode #305 // Over the last decade, there’s been a creeping trend for CEOs to weigh in on social issues, making their private stance very public. This has now almost become an expectation of high-profile corporate leadership roles. But when CEOs air their personal views on social issues, it also anchors their company, brand, and every stakeholder associated with it, to that position. Some of these are laudable, timely, commercially effective, and entirely consistent with the brand. Others range from the mildly inappropriate to the quantifiably disastrous. When putting this episode together, I realized that even I’m a little conflicted on what the right approach might be in different situations. My intent is to take you on a journey through some of the complexities that leaders face when they choose to weigh in on social issues.I start with a foundational concept — when a leader buys into a social issue, they buy in on behalf of all their stakeholders. I talk about the fact that not all issues are equal and, because motivation is such a critical ingredient, why not all motivations are equal.I also promise that, if you stay to the end of this slightly longer episode, I’ll tell you a couple of great stories — stories of both stunning success and abject failure in the quest to tie the fate of a company to a stand on a hot-button social issue.————————Learn the concepts that will help you level up your leadership capability with my free 5 Day Leadership Challenge. Join the challenge here————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • Moment #75: My Failproof Formula For Speaking Confidently

    05:18
Moment #75 // Many people rate public speaking as one of their top fears. And even though they may learn to push through and suck it up, it’s only a rare few who actually manage to reach the point of mastery, where they completely transcend their fear.In my experience, the primary skill you need to develop is not public speaking - it’s your ability to think on your feet.In this Moment, I give you my fail proof exercise to build your confidence and competence in presenting – whether it’s just your own direct reports, or an audience of thousands. If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can completely conquer your fear of presenting in public, have a listen to Ep.124 Overcoming Stage Fright.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
  • 304. Hard Work Can’t Outpace Bad Strategy: Q&A with Marty and Em

    22:13
Episode #304 // There are many things that can go wrong between when we utter the words, “Let’s develop our corporate strategy” and the words, “How did we perform last year?” I get a lot of questions about the strategy process, and one thing has become really obvious to me — very few people realize how many moving parts there are… not just in developing a sound strategy, but also in setting up the environment for successful execution of that strategy. One of the biggest problems with strategy is that we tend to see it as a process — an annual ritual to be conducted, rather than a culture and mindset that requires senior leadership focus, 24 x 7 x 365. Without this continuing focus, leadership teams can easily fall into the more obvious traps for young players… like investing to grow a product that doesn’t earn sufficient returns to cover its cost of capital. But there are many more potential problems that conspire to derail your strategy well after the board has signed off on it. Problems like:Not using a zero base to develop your work program; Not truly understanding the drivers that deliver the greatest value; andAllowing people to simply continue the activity that they’re most comfortable with.In this episode, I explain why — as important as it is to understand — the theory of strategy is necessary, but not sufficient. As a bonus, I also reveal a new concept that I haven’t spoken about before: the productivity v efficiency multiplier! ————————Be one of the first to take our brand new Strategy Beyond the Theory program, coming in November 2024!
