How to Stay Calm Under Pressure: 6 Signs Your Team Knows

Season 1, Ep. 424
•

You may think that you’re highly resilient, an expert at staying calm under pressure… but your team could be experiencing something completely different. They're the ones who see your lack of composure.

If you panic, that leaks onto your team. And every minute they spend managing your mood is a minute they don't spend delivering results.

This is the final instalment in our 7-part series, recut from a live workshop I ran called Stop Rescuing Your Underperformers. I've been looking at one leadership blind spot each day.

There's a person on your team who isn't delivering, and the premise I'm exploring this week is that they're more likely to be a symptom of the problem, rather than the root cause of it.

Underperformers are made. They're made by the things their leaders do, but can't see the impact of.

Today is number seven: Resilience. Are you a Landmine Leader? A Teflon Leader? A Catatonic Leader? Your people know which one you are, and no amount of “game face” can cover it up.

So before you decide your team is withholding bad news from you, look at yourself first: are you creating an environment where they can bring you anything? Or do they have to worry about reading your mood first?

If you want to fix your blindspots, doors for the next global cohort of Leadership Beyond the Theory close on 25th September. Invest 9-weeks to set yourself up for a lifetime of exceptional leadership performance.

  • 428. How to Prioritise as a Leader: 7 Ways to Stop Doing Too Much

    22:56||Season 1, Ep. 428
    The hardest thing I ever tried to do as an executive was to stop the sh!t that had already started: it gets a life of its own. On top of that, new work is being dreamt up all the time, further adding to your prioritisation nightmare. A recent article from The Economist argued that too many people are shockingly bad at prioritisation, and that the root cause isn't process; it's behaviour. I couldn't agree more. In this episode, I'll unpack what the research says, then give you seven practical ways to get on top of your prioritisation problems, starting with the one thing most leaders never get clear on: value.Links mentioned in this episode:No Bullsh!t Leadership episodes: Ep.340: Driving a High-Impact Value FocusThe Economist article: Too many people are shockingly bad at prioritisationLinkedIn link: Rhonda McSweeneyAmazon link: No Bullsh!t LeadershipLBT link: Leadership Beyond the Theory————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.

  • 427. Why Transformations Fail: 5 Reasons, and 3 Ways to Cope When It's Done to You

    17:02||Season 1, Ep. 427
    Most transformations don't transform all that much. They cost a lot of money, they suck a huge amount of the organisation's time and energy, and no one really checks to see if the benefits were ever delivered.If you're not on the executive team, the whole thing just happens to you. But in reality, you're not as powerless as you might think.In this episode, I dig into what transformation really is, why so few programs actually earn that label and, most importantly, why so many transformations fail.I unpack a recent cover story from Harvard Business Review on the false alignment trap, which provides a really useful starting point for the discussion; I then add five more common reasons for transformation disasters; and I finish with three practical ways to get a hand on the wheel when transformation is being done to you. • 425. 5 Reasons Why One-on-Ones Are Your Secret Weapon

    19:37||Season 1, Ep. 425
    Airbnb CEO, Brian Chesky says he doesn't believe in one-on-ones. I couldn’t disagree more, so in this episode I show you why sometimes, even the best CEOs get this one wrong. Chesky says the 1:1 model is flawed. Not only does he not do them, but he asserted that almost no great CEO does either. To support his point, he quoted Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, backing a similar view. Here's the problem: I think it's wrong. Not a little bit wrong, but fundamentally wrong for the vast majority of leaders who aren't running a flat, product-driven tech company. I spent thirty years perfecting the one-on-one, and it's the single most powerful tool I ever had as a leader. In this episode, I take Chesky's argument apart, point by point, and give you five reasons why the one-on-one is still your secret weapon.Amazon link: No Bullsh!t LeadershipLBT link: Leadership Beyond the Theory————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
