The Seder, The Taxi & The Convenience Store

Season 3, Ep. 117

On this week's episode we are reminded how Taxis in New York City need to go (but not the television series), why the CBS Network needs to go (and all their series) and how the only saving grace this week was the joy of looking at a nice clean convenience store out the window of a sad bar in New Jersey (cause they're gross in New York City). Also, going to see Book of Mormon on Broadway again; getting into a fight with a lady with a walker working at a clothing store; a crazy ex stating she was in jail (again) AND the kid in my class who never heard of Steve Martin. Old Man Juskow is incensed this week.

  • 120. David Sanborn Was Cool

    01:05:27
The Nightfly is back to do a tiny tribute to the great David Sanborn and some of his influence, especially his work with the great Dave Grusin, Sting, David Bowie and David Juskow (I added my name in to make another David reference - I should see if he worked with Dave Grohl -- although I do have a clip of him on David Letterman - SO. . . we're good). Also, another, if you can believe it, anchovy incident - I mean, it's impossible, right? AND, sending my backpack home in luxury turned out to be a major financial mix-up and toting around turned out to be a pain being in such a small place as well (but it's all hilarious)
  • 119. West Virginia, Mountain Mama

    01:03:19
Juskow in the City is thinking of moving to the State of West Virginia - I mean, probably not but did you know it's only 4½ hours away from NYC? I didn't know that. Also, I have dinner with showrunner of One Day at a Time on Netflix, Mike Royce who confesses he told Dave Attell to give up comedy in 1988. You know, cause it just wasn't for him. 😅 And, the Roast of Tom Brady and the new 24/7 channel - all Charles in Charge, all the time. What a show!
  • 118. The Anchovies Postulate

    57:14
This week we go to the legendary 54 Below Cabaret room (a possible crummy snobatorium) where me AND my friend Chris got into a fight with the waiter over anchovies. So already it's a great podcast. You know you love my restaurant fight stories. 😂 The last day of class was an extremely memorable one as we all said goodbye and received some extraordinary emails from the kids. Also, I bought 126 pieces of chalk for the girl next door to make her sidewalk art - you know how I like to contribute to the arts (in the cheapest way possible) AND a trip to the awesome speakeasy in Jackson Heights where I try my first Mint Julep just in time for the Kentucky Derby.
  • 116. Professor Juskow's 1982 in Film

    01:10:35
Today being Passover Professor Juskow takes a lesson plan page out of my class and we discuss films released in 1982. Although I think I forgot 1981 hilariously (we'll get back to it) there certainly is a treasure trove to discuss. We'll discuss the hilarious Morgan Fairchild vehicle, The Seduction; the awful sequel to Grease, Grease 2 and the classics, or at least the Juskow classics, Al Pacino in Author, Author and the Mel Brooks inspired, My Favorite Year. Fun, fun, fun.
  • 115. Dead Outlaw

    01:00:19
This week we go down to the West Village to see David Yazbek's new musical, "Dead Outlaw", which is terrific. We also run into my old managing partner from the firm at the play where I have become the Voldemort of the place (as in he who must not be named) - so EPIC. Also, as I go to see my friends Julian and Paul play piano also in the West Village and Julian doesn't finish his songs - it incenses me - so obviously - that's always a good podcast. And top it off with my lectures on the films of 1988 and 89, which include the greats, Sex, Lies & Videotape and Crimes & Misdemeanors. Interesting -- 2 films that have ampersands in them. That was a big thing in 1989.
  • 114. The Dueling Hamlet Riots of 1849

    01:04:23
That's right. One hundred years or so ago there were riots right here in River City (downtown Manhattan) over who's theatre had the better production of Hamlet. I only bring it up because it's my new course lecture and well -- it's incredibly hilarious and may make you feel a little better about the world today because nothing seems to change so. . . . -- Also this week, Artist Drew Friedman documentary; Gilbert Gottfried's daughter inventing the waffle sandwich; the Comedy Cellar Holiday Party (yes in April) 🤷‍♀️ and my mother's introduction roast of me before my lecture. I promise you, you will not find a stranger podcast then this anywhere else. Yay!
  • 113. The All the Presidents Parking Predicament

    01:09:12
Three Presidents past and present came into town this week and I know the first thing you thought of was "how would this affect Dave Juskow of Juskow in the City?" - and I appreciate that. Well, it was a nightmare, as usual. I thought they all hated New York City (except for Clinton), why do they bother me? Anyhoo, that, our friend Marcie coming to town; the Nickelodeon documentary and that poor Drake Bell and, again, "how does this affect Dave Juskow"; comedian Todd Barry's birthday party and how "Don't You Forget About Me" came to be sung by the band "Simple Minds". All this and more on an all new Juskow in the City.
  • 112. The Sure Thing

    01:08:21
On today's episode I lecture to my class on the importance of friendship and relationships. I'm worried about this generation of kids not having personal contacts and too much AI. I know it sounds silly but I've been seeing things with newer comics and my students that are worrying signs about the Earth's future. I know, right? But don't worry -- we're also talking about the Rob Reiner movie, "The Sure Thing", which I showed in class this week and according to the kids - it completely holds up so that's promising. Then of course, more cheese trouble at the Isle of Capri, intestinal trouble at Bloomingdales and a great night with college buddies. Well that's a well rounded episode I'd say. 😅
