Parenting Unfiltered: The Mean Girl in a Digital World
We’re talking about "mean girls" and how mean girl behavior has evolved in the digital age. It’s no longer just whispered comments or exclusion at recess—today, manipulation can happen through group chats, DMs, screenshots and social media posts. Girls are being targeted in more subtle, calculated ways—using each other’s words against them, turning private conversations into public humiliation, and isolating others with just a few taps on a screen. It’s hard to know how to help. How can we support our kids through a social landscape that’s constantly shifting?
This podcast is presented by The Common Parent. The all-in-one parenting resource you need to for your teens & tweens. We've uncovered every parenting issue, so you don't have too.

104. Figuring Out the Opposite Sex
29:43||Season 15, Ep. 104In this repeat episode we’re diving back into the ’90s classic Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus because, honestly, some things about the opposite sex will never make sense. Men try to fix our feelings. Women try to fix the men. Everyone ends up feeling misunderstood, unappreciated and annoyed. This book spent 121 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, and somehow, decades later, we still don’t have the opposite sex figured out.So… should we bring this ’90s classic back?
103. Will We Survive University Drop-Off?
36:39||Season 15, Ep. 103We’re talking about ALL the feelings that come with sending your kid off to college/university — the nostalgia, the anxiety, the excitement, and the very weird realization that they’re basically going to a resort where they can do their own laundry, eat unlimited food, go to football games and make their own decisions. So… what exactly are we sad about? Every child is different when it comes to leaving home! We unpack whether procrastination is actually a coping mechanism, and why university can feel less like “going to school” and more like playing grown-up. Plus, we’re talking dorm rooms that are nicer than our own bedrooms, co-ed bathrooms, orientation week activities that sound suspiciously like a four star resort, and the very real question: How will we say goodbye? We’re about to find out. Buckle up for the university drop-off episode… coming next!Keywordsuniversity, parenting, college life, emotional journey, family, independence, student life, parental feelings, college preparationKey topicsThe emotional impact of children leaving for universityUnderstanding what university life really entailsHow parents can prepare emotionally and practicallyThe importance of independence and self-reliance for studentsManaging parental expectations and feelings
102. Doomscrolling and Why We Do It
39:17||Season 15, Ep. 102In this repeat episode we’re talking about doom scrolling — why we do it, why our kids do it, and how it can quietly become the way we mute feelings we don’t want to deal with. Scrolling can make you feel everything, or it can make you feel nothing at all. Either way, it pulls you out of your own life without you even noticing. At some point, your kids will need to study or focus without you taking the phone away from them, and understanding their doom-scrolling habits is important for both you and them.
101. Nat Explains What an “O” REALLY Feels Like!
26:03||Season 15, Ep. 101In this repeat episode we’re diving straight into 21 bizarre things that can happen to your body during sex! From sneezing mid-orgasm to getting Charlie horses in places you didn’t even know could cramp, we’re unpacking the wild, weird, and slightly concerning “body glitches” that apparently come with getting it on.And because we can never stay on topic, we somehow end up talking about messy houses, husbands who “thin it out,” and why a man bringing you ice cream might actually be a red flag. It’s relatable, it’s mildly educational (we think??), and it’s exactly the kind of Friday conversation you didn’t know you needed.
100. They Want Space...But Also Want Snacks
36:36||Season 15, Ep. 100In this repeat epsiode we get real about the “bubble”, that sweet spot where friendship, trust, and boundaries collide. We share stories of teenagers making rebellious moves (like hiding tequila in laundry baskets – yes, really!) and teach how patterns, signs, and a good analogy can reveal what’s really going on in your kid’s brain. Plus, discover how to teach resilience by letting them walk in the rain, even if it means soaking wet kids and parents.
99. Unlocking How Your Kids’ Brain Works
25:54||Season 15, Ep. 99This is a personal story. Every child is different, every family’s experience is different, and this is simply our story.Kids can be masters at being chameleons. They often don’t want to stand out, be different, or admit that they learn differently. They can become incredibly good at hiding their struggles—until, one day, the wheels come off.The truth is that teachers and school systems aren’t always equipped to fully understand every child’s learning differences. But we’ve learned that we don’t have to rely solely on the system to understand how our children learn. For us, it’s about understanding our child’s IEP, understanding how their brain works, and giving them the tools they need to navigate their challenges. It’s about helping them create their own roadmap to success—on their own terms. We choose to celebrate effort over perfection. We try to understand the gaps rather than shame them. And above all, we want to help our kids grow into confident people. At the end of the day, that’s what we’re trying to protect most: their confidence. You can work on grades. You can build new skills. You can find different paths forward. But confidence is much harder to get back once it’s been taken away.
98. Let's Get Weird
27:40||Season 15, Ep. 98What if the key to finding more happiness, success—and maybe even a missing coat—is as simple as believing it’s possible? In this repeat episode, we get a little woo-woo as we dive into the power of energy, intuition, and putting our belief out into the universe. From unexpected signs and small miracles to test scores and lost coats, we explore what can happen when we stop doubting and start trusting. We also get real about bitterness, jealousy, and the pressure to always be exceptional—and why embracing being “mediocre” might actually be one of the most freeing things we can do.
97. The University Drop-Off Countdown
36:35||Season 15, Ep. 97We’re officially entering our university/college drop-off era! We’re talking about the emotional roller coaster of sending our kids off to university, and the insanity of university dorm rooms — from $20K–$30K makeovers and peel-and-stick wallpaper to the question of whether we’re making college too comfortable for our kids. Do they really need a perfectly decorated room, stocked snacks and fancy shower bottles, or is a little “jail cell” living part of the experience? Plus, we’re getting real about the chaos of move-in day, watching our kids grow up, and the realization that once they leave, life at home will never be exactly the same. We’re excited, terrified, slightly delusional and pretending everything is fine. Because everything is fine....right??Keywordsuniversity move-in, college prep, packing tips, student life, parent guide, residence life, parenting, aging, fashion trends, children leaving home, communication, societal expectations, personal storiesKey topicsParenting transitions and communicationFashion trends and societal recyclingEmotional impact of children leaving homeFinancial aspects of university livingPersonal growth through aging and changeOrganizing dorm essentials and snacksManaging shared bathroom spaces and decorPlanning for move-in day logistics and supportHandling emotional aspects of leaving homeTips for packing and organizing for college
96. The Pressure of Picking a University
25:38||Season 15, Ep. 96As we get ready to ship one kid off to university we felt it was a great time to bring back this repeat episode! We have been touring universites and wow - these kids are putting so much pressure on themselves to figure it all out. Our advice is start early. Exploring options sooner helps to take the weight off and make the decision process simpler in Grade 12/seniour year. Remind kids that their first choice might not be their forever choice. With the right guidance, they can always change direction. Sometimes just knowing it’s not forever makes the whole journey so much easier.
