1435 || the key to effective self care
10:19|Reminder 1. The point of self care is to care for yourself, not add unnecessary shame or heighten the stakes. Reminder 2: You can’t optimize yourself out of experiencing all pain and discomfort.Reminder 3: There is no one size fits all fix to any problem.REMINDER 4: Sometimes, if we’re really lucky - we will find things that can help offer guideposts through a very tricky existence. ACTION ITEM: read, listen, watch, and pay real close attention to the things that make you feel lucky to enough to see. ACTION ITEM: Compile a list of those anything that helps you feel seen or heard or validated. Bonus: Share it with others who you think may feel “seen” by it, too. KEY LESSON: What’s cool about this exploration is that, when you’re always on the lookout for your humanity in others, you’ll start to see it in everything and everyone. Until then, just let yourself enjoy the process of exploration.Donate to Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund::www.pcrf.netDonate to Mutual Aid Funds: https://www.folxhealth.com/library/mutual-aid-fundsGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1434 || the problem with self care
10:07|THE PROBLEM WITH SELF CARE + HOW TO DEAL WITH ITPROBLEM 1: NO SIMPLE DEFINITION But because being a human includes incredibly diverse experiences, and inherently dealing with messy and complicated things, we can safely assume that caring for yourself is bound to be a little messy and complicated, too. PROBLEM 2: CAPITALISM: People are constantly trying to bottle and sell you something that isn’t bottlable or sellable, so it will take some discretion and emotional literacy in being able to decipher what self care is actually worth a damn. PROBLEM 3: People treat self care like a goal, rather than a practice. Self care is not optional, but it is a practice you can improve upon. The challenge is, effective self care is an ongoing, ever changing practice of discovery and self soothing and accountability and challenge. The main problem I have with “self care” is there’s no simple or universal definition for it.KEY LESSON: The key to effective self care is KNOWING WHAT YOU REALLY NEED (underlying wants, impulses, and emotions) AND UNDERSTANDING THE BEST WAY TO GIVE THOSE UNDERLYING NEEDS ATTENTION.Donate to Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund::www.pcrf.netDonate to Mutual Aid Funds: https://www.folxhealth.com/library/mutual-aid-fundsGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 07:30|Hey friend! I had a technical difficulty today + the episode I planned didn't upload properly but I have fixed it (I think) and it will be uploaded tomorrow, as normal. Hope you enjoy this repost of my passion for food in the meantime. I AM SORRY + I LOVE YOU. -- Julie1432 || the final "rules of thumb" for a good life
10:41|Some rules of thumb we review today include: "Is there a better use of my time?""Stress vs. Reward Analysis""It's okay to not finish a book you were reading for pleasure." "The braggers razor: the more someone brags, the less you should believe them.""Writing knife block: If struggling to understand something, write it down.""Opinions are earned, not owed." "Under-promise, and over-deliver."Rules of thumb should be applied in context. No rule should be applied universally! They're there to make life more rewarding and easier, so use them as a tool to help reduce over-analyzing things to death. 11:08|Feynman Razor: If you can't explain it to a 5 year old, you don't really understand it. The Luck Razor: Much of what we call "luck" is the macro result of thousands of micro actions. The Arena Razor: When faced with two paths, choose the path that puts you in the arena. Once you're in the arena, never take advice from people on the sidelines. The Optimist Razor: When choosing who to spend time with, prioritize spending more time with optimists.Taleb's "look the part" test: If forced to choose between two options of seemingly equal merit, choose the one that doesn’t look the part. The Gratitude Razor: The more you show gratitude, the more you see things to be grateful to. Invested vs. Spent test: Time is either invested or spent. The Rooms Razor: Choose the room where you aren't the smartest in it. The New Project Razor: Are you excited? Would you still do it if it was twice as long and half as successful?Uphill Decision Razor: Easy now, hard later OR hard now, easy later. Listen Mode: Listen more than you speak to people you disagree with. Lion Razor: Sprint + Rest, rather than expecting consistent work mode 8 hours a day. Young + Old Test: Make choices your 80 year old + 10 year old self would be proud of. Duck Test: If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. Just make sure you're judging true habitual characteristics + not context based outliers. 09:25|Alder's Razor: If something cannot be settled by experiment or observation, then it is not worthy of debate.Sagan Standard: Positive claims require positive evidence, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.Grice's Razor: Conversational implications are to be preferred over semantic context for linguistic explanations.Chekhov's Gun: If it appeared in foreshadowing, it will likely be used in the future.
