IE070 Stephen Jenkinson: Elderhood: Coming Of Age in a Time of Trouble (Initiations & Rights-of-Passage)
Our guest for this week is Stephen Jenkinson, a culture activist, teacher, author, ceremonialist and founder of the Orphan Wisdom School.
Stephenās educational background includes masters degrees in Theology and Social Work. He is renowned for his work regarding grief and dying all over North America. Years of working with people who are either dying or experiencing the loss of a loved one have given him profound insight into how we perceive, interpret and deal with death. Throughout his career, he was performing roles such as programme director in a major Canadian hospital and assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school. He has also worked as a consultant to palliative care and hospice organizations and educator and advocate in the helping professions.
Stephen founded Orphan Wisdom School back in 2010, a teaching house and a learning house for the skills of deep living and making human culture. The name āorphanā describes people whose culture has been built upon mass migration, but as Stephen puts it ānot knowing where you are from is not the same thing as being from nowhereā. The philosophy of Orphan Wisdom School is rooted in āknowing history, being claimed by ancestry and working for a time we may not seeā.
He was also the subject of the feature-length documentary film titled āGriefwalkerā released in 2008. In the film, you get to experience and witness not only Stephenās work and teachings of palliative care but his thoughts on culture, community, and the need for elders. He has produced a 10 part series called āThe Haiku Sessionsā which are created based on his live recorded teachings.
Stephen has authored two books. In 2015, he published āDie Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soulā which works as a guide for dying well by learning the right skills through the process of living well. His latest book is called āCome of Age: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Troubleā. It was released in 2018 and in it, Stephen makes the case for birthing āa new generation of elders, one poised and willing to be true stewards of the planet and its speciesā.
For the next several weeks, Stephen will be touring Australia and New Zealand with his latest book. You can expect events such as author reading and reportage, all day talks and festival appearances. Check out the dates of his tour here!

Stephenās Journey of Inspired Evolution
āAnyone who speaks with authority about oneās own life has been reading the wrong mail.ā - Stephen Jenkinson
Stephen plays an active role in something that he likes to call āthe death tradeā. To give a better explanation of what he means by that, he takes us back to a moment in his life when it all began. He was approached with an offer and the idea behind it was that Stephen would organize a support group for men who were having trouble coping with losing important people in their lives.
āI would take the little job which was to do a six-week group for these guys and I didnāt have any idea what I was going to do.ā - Stephen Jenkinson
Even though he wasnāt a ācorporate guyā, he decided not to pass on an opportunity to help others in their time of need. But he was faced with a new conundrum. It became pretty clear to him that men arenāt that open to participating in emotional support groups that were exclusively for men. Most people would either give up in a situation like this, or try to change the conditions of their role, but Stephen actually saw potential in this particular challenge. He knew that even though he would have to face some drawbacks and that people would be reluctant to join his group, he also knew that all of these men were sharing the same situation and had several characteristics that would allow them to bond.
āThatās the group itās going to be. A menās group for men who donāt want to be in a group for men.ā - Stephen Jenkinson
Stephen managed to persuade and form a group that had around 7 or 8 members in the beginning. After a few sessions, it became apparent to Stephen that the main topic they should devote their time to in their discussions is anger. Because even though anger is a perfectly natural response, it has been completely rejected by Western society. He noticed that the members of his group were very reliant on their anger but were also very ashamed for feeling and responding in such a way to the situation theyāre in.
āThey were so good at anger, basically, to cover something that they had very little practice at and that was the art and the skillfulness of being sad.ā - Stephen Jenkinson
The shift in the topic actually resulted in the group being dubbed as āSad Schoolā but the value of these meetings is reflected in the fact that the six-week group ended up lasting around 18 months. It was there that Stephen had found his calling and discovered a new sense of purpose.
What Does It Mean to Be an Elder?
The variety and scale of topics discussed in this podcast surpass the limits of our humble show notes. But letās focus on Stephenās understanding of the roles elders play or at least should play in our society. A lot of other concepts in Stephenās teachings can be connected to this theme. He goes on to explain the meaning behind the phrase ārespect your eldersā and essentially analyses the implications of different ways of comprehending this message. He believes the formula has a sort of a ātwo-part interpretationā and that in our society only one is present.
āThe part that never appears, that nobody talks about⦠is, you respect your elders in part because they have carried themselves in a respectable way.ā - Stephen Jenkinson
One of the most profound aspects of his teaching regarding the topic of elders is that Stephen understands it is a role to be earned. Itās not a simple consequence of having lived a certain number of years, you should have also behaved and represented yourself in a manner that will incite the respect of younger generations. It should also be pointed out that ārespectā in this context is a complex term that also holds within itself the idea of āseeking guidanceā. We dive very deep into the very core of the topic in our conversation.
Stephenās Message of Inspired Evolution
Talking to Stephen feels like talking to a profound-quote machine, but you immediately understand that the description would make no sense because of the fact his sincere humanity takes over you in an instant. Iāve been a fan of his work for quite some time and making this podcast was an amazing experience and a true privilege. I hope youāll discover much of the same things that drew me to him in the first place when you listen to our conversation. Finally, I could probably take any of his innumerable messages he has crafted with such verbal excellence that thereās no hiding the fact he is a true artist as well. Iāve decided to go with one that resonates with the heart of our show and Iām sincerely hoping it will inspire an evolution within all:
āWhat limit really is, is the opportunity for your style finally to appear.ā - Stephen Jenkinson

613. #613 Why Decades of Meditation Fail: Angelo Dilullo on Psychedelic Illusions, Zen Koans, and Absolute Truth
01:44:37||Ep. 613Angelo Dilullo breaks down how genuine spiritual awakening requires the total collapse of identity and thought identification rather than brief spiritual reprieves. Moving beyond superficial dogma, he explains how intense suffering serves not as a hindrance, but as a vital "glitch in The Matrix" pointing directly toward living truth. He details how releasing thought structures allows space, time, and separate self-consciousness to dissolve, uncovering an unfiltered, boundless consciousness.Contrasting decades of passive meditation with direct realization, Angelo addresses why many seekers remain stuck in mind identification as a trauma-based dissociation mechanism. He clarifies the critical difference between temporary psychedelic tripsāwhich merely suppress or leverage identityāand permanent sober awakening that restructures perception itself. By using Zen koans like "Mu" to exhaust the controlling mind, he illustrates how praying for absolute truth dissolves the fear of death and aligns the individual with unyielding reality. Is traditional spiritual practice keeping you comfortably trapped in mind identification, or are you willing to let your constructed identity burn away to realize absolute truth?___šŖ BOOK YOUR PERSONAL 1-1 ASTROLOGY READINGThese collective shifts affect each of us differently.Explore how this moment is appearing in your chart, what season of life you are moving through, and how to work with your current astrology consciously and practically.Debra Silverman personally recommends booking a reading with Amrit.Still at introductory pricing...š BOOK YOUR 1ā1 ASTROLOGY READING HERE:https://amritsandhu.com/reading___š JOIN THE INSPIRED EVOLUTION CIRCLE The Inspired Evolution Circle is our private community for conscious souls who want to ground spiritual wisdom into everyday life, connect deeply/Inside the Circle:⢠Weekly live gatherings and guided practices⢠Intimate Q&As with guests like Kelly⢠Sharing circles and conscious community⢠Early invitations to retreats and live experiences⢠A sacred space to connect, evolve and belongš JOIN THE CIRCLE NOW:https://inspiredevolution.com/circle___š¬ EPISODE CHAPTERS:00:00 Breakup Suffering Triggers Deep Self-Inquiry06:23 Zen Contemplation Dissolves Thought Identification12:23 Unbound Consciousness Expands Beyond Personal Identity18:47 Non-Dual Realization Collapses Space and Time27:06 Identity Resistance Creates Spiritual Destabilization34:08 Direct Self-Inquiry Outperforms Decades of Meditation44:07 Zen Koans Force Mind Exhaustion for Breakthroughs51:16 Human Consciousness Evolves Through Suffering56:31 Psychedelic Breakthroughs vs Permanent Sobriety Shift01:02:13 Self-Inquiry Uncovers Thought Addiction and Trauma01:13:01 Suffering Acts as Breadcrumbs to Absolute Truth01:18:51 Spiritual Traditions Provide Tools Not Awakening01:29:15 Death Anxiety Dissolves in Infinite Awareness01:33:20 Universal Causality Moves Through Inner Awareness01:40:05 Absolute Truth Prayers Transform Personal Reality___š FIND ANGELO ONLINEGet your copies of Angelo Dilullo's books here: š https://inspiredevolution.com/AngeloDilullo_books⦠Website: https://simplyalwaysawake.com/⦠YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SimplyAlwaysAwake⦠Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/simply_always_awake⦠Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Simply.Always.Awake/⦠TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@simply_always_awake⦠Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/simply-always-awake/id1668263566⦠Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3RZiM62g8XYE4PuEF2EleN

612. How Psilocybin Microdosing Unlocks Authentic Truth & Spiritual Sustenance with Adam Schell
01:09:11||Ep. 612Adam Schell, content creator and co-founder of Brain Supreme, reveals how microdosing psilocybin serves as a catalyst for neurogenesis, emotional healing, and psychological resilience. Moving beyond standard pharmaceutical solutions, he explains how psilocybin unwires negative neural pathwaysāsuch as guilt, shame, and fearāwhile reactivating damaged brain regions to help individuals recover from trauma and brain injuries. From his early days as a Division One football player to surviving a million-dollar publishing collapse and the complete ruin of his California cannabis farms, Adam outlines the personal adversity that led to his own regenesis. He cautions against relying on psilocybin as a quick-fix "magic bullet," while demonstrating how combining functional mushrooms, nootropics, and targeted dosing protocols offers a practical way to regain mental clarity, build positive habits, and compartmentalize severe stress.Tracing his path from personal financial failure to guiding thousands of microdosing clients, Adam contrasts conventional scientific dogma with a deeply intuitive, spiritual connection to plant intelligence. He introduces the concept of the "etheric mycelial network," illustrating how aligning with the sentience of mushrooms fosters radical authenticity, dissolves addictive behaviors, and restores a grounded sense of truthfulness in daily life.Is human potential strictly limited by past trauma, debt, and neurological decline, or can the intentional integration of microdosing unlock a profound level of cognitive flexibility, emotional freedom, and creative vitality?___šŖ BOOK YOUR PERSONAL 1-1 ASTROLOGY READINGThese collective shifts affect each of us differently.Explore how this moment is appearing in your chart, what season of life you are moving through, and how to work with your current astrology consciously and practically.Debra Silverman personally recommends booking a reading with Amrit.Still at introductory pricing...š BOOK YOUR 1ā1 ASTROLOGY READING HERE:https://amritsandhu.com/reading___š JOIN THE INSPIRED EVOLUTION CIRCLE The Inspired Evolution Circle is our private community for conscious souls who want to ground spiritual wisdom into everyday life, connect deeply/Inside the Circle:⢠Weekly live gatherings and guided practices⢠Intimate Q&As with guests like Kelly⢠Sharing circles and conscious community⢠Early invitations to retreats and live experiences⢠A sacred space to connect, evolve and belongš JOIN THE CIRCLE NOW:https://inspiredevolution.com/circle___š¬ EPISODE CHAPTERS:00:00:00 Three Unique Mechanisms of Psilocybin00:01:57 Reversing Brain Injuries and Methylene Blue00:06:19 From Football Dreams to Key West Mushroom Trip00:11:35 Literary Success, Setbacks, and Cannabis Pivot00:18:48 Financial Collapse and the Birth of Brain Supreme00:27:37 Psilocybin as the Premier Nootropic Catalyst00:32:34 Protocol for Microdosing and Dosages Explained00:39:59 Addressing SSRIs, Side Effects, and Dehydration00:45:21 Spontaneous Anti-Inflammatory Perception and Breaks00:50:25 Breaking Addictive Behaviors and Authentic Living00:53:50 Connecting to the Etheric Mycelial Network00:56:27 Athletic Performance Dosing Versus Heroic Doses01:02:37 Rejecting Stoned Ape Theory for Divine Creation01:06:30 Unlocking Late-Night Executive Function and Creativity___š FIND ADAM ONLINE⦠Website: https://brainsupreme.co/š§ Support your brain health with Brain Supreme and enjoy 15% off your order using our exclusive link: https://brainsupreme.co/discount/AMRIT15

611. #611 Stephen Jenkinson: The Mind in Eclipse, Parkinsonās, and the Wisdom of Grief
01:05:25||Ep. 611Stephen Jenkinson, culture activist, author, and teacher of grief and death literacy, reveals how facing a neurodegenerative diagnosis serves as a profound lens into the nature of mind, mortality, and human presence. Moving beyond clinical definitions of Parkinson's disease, he explains how the erosion of dopamineāwhat he terms the "give a shit elixir"āalters the connection between emotional affect and internal experience, forcing a drastic reconsideration of personal habits and identity. From reflecting on the "awful clarity" of a mind in eclipse to writing his journal entries in *Trembling Still*, Stephen explores the disfiguring psychic distress that accompanies neurological decline. He cautions against viewing life as a pursuit to keep being oneself no matter what, while demonstrating how the physical act of splitting wood and performing musical recitations becomes an active refusal to prematurely surrender to physical limitation.Tracing his journey from writing *Die Wise* to navigating his current physical reality, Stephen contrasts mainstream medical reliance on future-oriented hope with a disciplined, present-moment engagement. He examines the confounding alchemy of "grief love" and the concept of "harrowing," illustrating how breaking through hardened, inert surfaces keeps human sorrow liquid and makes room for genuine joy.Is human identity bound strictly to neurological acuity and functional survival, or does the devastation of hard times offer a rare, grace-filled discipline to engage the present moment with profound love and clarity?___šŖ BOOK YOUR PERSONAL 1-1 ASTROLOGY READINGThese collective shifts affect each of us differently.Explore how this moment is appearing in your chart, what season of life you are moving through, and how to work with your current astrology consciously and practically.Debra Silverman personally recommends booking a reading with Amrit.Still at introductory pricing...š BOOK YOUR 1ā1 ASTROLOGY READING HERE:https://amritsandhu.com/reading___š JOIN THE INSPIRED EVOLUTION CIRCLE The Inspired Evolution Circle is our private community for conscious souls who want to ground spiritual wisdom into everyday life, connect deeply/Inside the Circle:⢠Weekly live gatherings and guided practices⢠Intimate Q&As with guests like Kelly⢠Sharing circles and conscious community⢠Early invitations to retreats and live experiences⢠A sacred space to connect, evolve and belongš JOIN THE CIRCLE NOW:https://inspiredevolution.com/circle___š¬ EPISODE CHAPTERS:00:00 Contemplating Death as Fertilizer for Life07:09 Living Between Diagnosis and Destination10:20 Awful Clarity of a Brain Slowly Dying17:25 Disfiguration and Where the Self Resides25:03 Navigating Bad Days Without Seeking Victory30:03 Differentiating Mind, Self, and Brain33:24 Fidelity to Inquiry While Being Alive37:33 Keeping Faith with Heartache in Writing40:27 Refusing to Cooperate with Physical Limits44:46 Provisioning Loved Ones for What Lies Ahead49:29 Inventing Language for Unspeakable Realities54:28 Engaging Present Reality Over Future Hope56:43 Understanding Grief Love and Real Endings59:44 Breaking Hardened Surfaces Through Harrowing01:01:45 Practicing Laughter and Joy as Duty___š FIND STEPHEN ONLINE⦠Website: https://orphanwisdom.com⦠YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@orphanwisdommedia⦠Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stephenjenkinsonofficial⦠Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reckoninglive⦠Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/orphanwisdom
