Thousands died due to starvation and freezing temperatures, so in late December Operation Winter Storm was launched from the outside, to rescue those Germans within. Yet this was always a highly ambitious and unrealistic plan and by Christmas Eve it was clear no one was coming to save them. So what if those inside had managed to break out earlier, or what remained of them had been rescued in December 1942? This is History Undone.
