On the Geektown Radio podcast this week I am joined by Bex from TristaBytes to chat through the usual weekly tv, film and gaming news, plus a look at the next week on tv. We also have an exclusive interview with Mac Quayle, Ryan Murphy's "go-to" composer for a host of series from the recently released Netflix show 'The Politician', to 'American Horror Story', to 'Pose'. He also writes the music for Sam Esmail's brilliant 'Mr. Robot' which returns for the fourth and final season this week.

'The Politician', which stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange and Ben Platt, follows Payton Hobart, a wealthy student from Santa Barbara, who has dreamed of becoming president of the United States since the age of 7 but must first navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School.

Aside from 'The Politician', Mac scores returning Golden Globe-winning suspense-thriller 'Mr. Robot', starring Christian Slater and Rami Malek, for which he won an Emmy in 2016. He also works on 'American Horror Story', for which he received his first Emmy nomination on his score on 'American Horror Story: Freak Show', along with 80s NYC ball scene drama, 'Pose', and procedural drama '9-1-1' which he co-composes with Todd Haberman.

In 2017, he received two Emmy nominations for his main title and score in Ryan Murphy’s hit series, 'Feud: Bette and Joan', starring Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon. The same year, Quayle received his second consecutive World Soundtrack Award nomination for his work on 'Feud: Bette and Joan', 'Mr. Robot' and 'Scream Queens', starring Emma Roberts and Jamie Lee Curtis. His other past credits include 'The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story', starring Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez, Ricky Martin and Darren Criss, and the Emmy-winning 'The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story', starring John Travolta, Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr.

  • Interview: Scoring Netflix’s ‘Exploding Kittens’ with Composers Jina An & Shirley Song

    34:01|
Welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I’m chatting with Jina An & Shirley Song, the composers behind Netflix's brilliant adult animated series ‘Exploding Kittens’.If you haven’t yet caught ‘Exploding Kittens’, the series is inspired by the beloved card game from Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal webcomic, Elan Lee, and Shane Small. After a meeting in heaven, there is a general consensus that Earth sucks, so God (voiced by the wonderful Tom Ellis from ‘Lucifer’) gets fired and sent to Earth to reconnect with humanity. The catch? He’s trapped in the body of a chubby house cat. As part of Godcat’s rehabilitation, he moves in with a dysfunctional family and tries to solve their problems, but ends up spending a lot of time chasing laser pointers. And to top it off, Godcat’s next-door neighbour, who is also a cat, turns out to be none other than his nemesis, the Antichrist. It is brilliant, hilariously funny, and Season 1 is all on Netflix right now!Jina and Shirley have been composing together pretty much since college, and were tasked with creating a soundtrack that captures the show's explosive energy. This also involved them touching on a huge array of musical genres like 8-bit nostalgia, energetic Cajun flair, heavy metal rock, and both choral and orchestral scores to bring the madcap adventures and quirky characters to life.Outside of ‘Exploding Kittens’, the duo are also known for working on the beloved Netflix series ‘XO, Kitty’, and have a number of other projects coming up which we talk about in the interview.

  • Interview: Krista Perry, Stunt Coordinator for 'Reservation Dogs' Season 3

    24:26|
Welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I’m chatting with Krista Perry, the Stunt Coordinator for Season 3 of ‘Reservation Dogs’.‘Reservation Dogs’, which is available on Disney+ in the UK and on FX on Hulu in the USA, follows four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma who steal, rob, and save in order to get to the exotic, mysterious, and faraway land of California.Krista Perry is a native Californian, who grew up travelling the country at the age of eight for competitive swimming. Finishing out her career as an All American Swimmer in the state of California. There's nothing in the water she has not mastered or attempted. However, she had a rather interesting route into film, which we cover in the interview. The stunt work on the series involved working with the actors so they can confidently execute their stunts, coordinating challenging horse stunts while maintaining set safety, and even locating and casting a horse-riding conquistador!Outside of ‘Reservation Dogs’, Krista has worked on shows and films such as ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, ‘Dark Winds’, ‘Roswell, New Mexico’, ‘Blue Bloods’, ‘The Right Stuff’, ‘Fancy Dance’, and ‘A Creature Was Stirring’.
  • Interview: Production Designer Ramsey Avery - ‘No One Will Save You’, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’

    49:12|
Hello, and welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I’m chatting with Ramsey Avery, the Production Designer behind Disney & Hulu’s sci-fi horror film ’No One Will Save You’. Written and directed by Brian Duffield, ‘No One Will Save You’ follows Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever), an exiled anxiety-ridden homebody, who must battle an alien that found its way into her home. What makes the movie particularly unique is that it features only 5 words of dialogue in the entire movie. This made Ramsey’s job an interesting challenge as he needed to help showcase all of the unspoken storytelling through his production design. It meant that his sets and designs had to be intricately planned and executed to make up for lack of words and to use the world around the main character to explain everything from who Brynn is and her backstory to the reasoning behind her choices and her relationships with other people in town with whom she only has a single non-verbal interaction. It’s a fantastic little film, and if you’re in the UK you can watch it right now on Disney+, or in the USA you can find it on Hulu.In the interview, we not only discuss Ramsey’s work on ‘No One Will Save You’, but also his impressive back catalogue of projects including ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’, ‘Minority Report’, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, and ‘Team America: World Police’. He’s also worked on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2’, ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ and the upcoming ‘Captain America: Brave New World’. Plus, he has designed various theme park attractions, including the Avengers Campus at Disney’s California Adventure.
