This week, Martin Merrick talks to Ava Moffitt who combines college life with helping run a suckler and sheep enterprise, a pub and the families but livestock mart in Manorhamilton.
If you want something done ask a busy person they say. In that case, asking Ava Moffitt to do something would be a wise choice, but she has enough irons in the fire as she is. Between lambing ewes and calving cows on the home farm in spring to working behind the family pub, then jumping back in to the boots to help run the family owned Manorhamilton mart, it’s a wonder Ava has time to complete her degree in ATU Letterkenny, but the young Cavan woman somehow manages.
We chat about what it was like to grow up in a mart and how both her and her siblings have taken on more responsibility as the years go on, with Ava heading up the ever growing Christmas fatstock sale.
Aside from all her commitments to home and college, Ava is also one of the select few young sheep farmers chosen to take part in Kepak’s Young Sheep Farmer Forum which we also discuss.

She reached out to Sarah McIntosh, the careers and education journalist with the Irish Farmers Journal, on Instagram for guidance on courses and college life. As a result, Emily followed her passion in agriculture and decided to study at University College Dublin. She didn’t feel much pressure around the CAO or points as her guidance counsellor helped her to explore all her options.
Young Stock - From the road less travelled to lecturing Dr. Brian Leonard
48:27|Originally intending to spend three years in Galway to do an arts degree, Brian Leonard ended up spending thirteen years in the county between studies and various roles within Teagasc and Galway County Council. Originally intending on going on to do primary teaching, Brian left college and began working with Teagasc exploring farm diversification options before completing a PhD in Teagasc Athenry, having previously completed a Masters in Rural Sustainability. After spending a stint with Galway County Council working on various projects, the teaching bug came calling again; this time lecturing in UCD. Now an established lecturer in the School of Agriculture and Food Science, Brian tells us his story from his undergrad through to his current work. He also gives an insight in to some of the more unseen work completed in UCD with regards research, as well as giving some key advice for students thinking of studying agriculture.
