Fail Like An Artist

"Shut up, you can" and other motivational quotes

Season 2, Ep. 15

We’re back baby!! We hope you’ve missed us in your ears because we’ve certainly missed podcasting. This week the format has changed slightly, firstly you’ll notice the pod has dropped at the beginning of the week, (yay you can now plan your entire week around when to listen!) and secondly since we hadn’t had a proper chat for a while, we decided to keep this episode more of a catch up rather than focusing on one particular topic. There definitely still fails in here though! Julie chats about her mission of setting herself a deadline to finish an ambitious amount of paintings and Phoebe…fails a lot…! And you’ll have to listen to find out why!

Visit the Fail Like An Artist  newsletter for the full list of recommendations from this weeks episode- too many to fit in the show notes!

  • 42. Perceptions Around Instagram

    57:59
This week we are chatting about perceptions. Phoebe recently reached a milestone and tipped over 100,000 Instagram followers, so we chat about how this came about after a long time little growth. We discuss how this number is a bit like being ‘rich in Monopoly’ and doesn’t mean instant sales or success. We delve into how it is impossible to predict when a reel will go viral, and also how follower count can impact people’s expectations and perceptions. We both have different ways of communicating using Instagram, but the one key similarity is that we never stray from being ourselves - sharing in a way that comes most naturally to us - and we both agree that using it to keep an up-to-date portfolio of work and building a genuine connection with your audience is far more important than follower count number. We also talk about what to do when you feel like there’s “no point” in posting because of the algorithm, and what holds artists (ourselves included) back from posting, such as worrying about how others perceive you and your art.We hope you found this week’s episode interesting, please let us know your thoughts and any questions it raised.PG & JBFind Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart  & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi! Please don’t forget to rate and review! • 41. Failing Forward - Learning To Pause Before You Start

    49:46
This week we are chatting about how we reboot or start new artworks and art projects. We discuss the ways that we have failed at this in the past, by jumping in too quickly and not fully allowing ideas to develop, and how we both want to get better at pausing before rushing ahead. When thinking about planning, it’s no surprise that Julie is more of a spreadsheet user and Phoebe tends to use her less reliable ‘mind map’ system… We also discover the ‘interesting’ way that Phoebe visualises a year.We hope you enjoy this chat, please share with us how you like to plan and restart!PG & JBMentioned:Sarah Tasker - Letters To A Hopeful Creative Episode hereListener Fail: Sierra Roberts @sierrarobertspaintFind Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart  & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi! Please don’t forget to rate and review! 42:10
It’s been a minute since we sat down to record, and we just about forgot how to do it! This episode sees us catching up with the big life events that have been the reason for our absence. Phoebe’s trip to the UK and Julie’s visit back to Australia for her solo exhibition. We chat about the highs and lows of the past couple of months, barely scratching the surface, but at least we know there will be more episodes to come! That you for sticking with us whilst we took a pause… We hope you enjoyed this episode!PG & JBMentioned:Julie’s exhibition: Above & BelowListener Fail: Charlotte Buskin @charlottebuskinartistFind Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart  & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi! Please don’t forget to rate and review! • 39. Interview with Alice Sheridan

    01:12:00
This week we chat with Alice Sheridan, a London based artist, one half of the popular art podcast ‘Art Juice’, and creator of the ‘Connected Artist Club’, a supportive art community full of advice, resources and workshops.Alice spoke really honestly about her failures, what struck us most how insightful she is when she looks back onto past and recent failures. • 38. Interview with Amber Creswell Bell

    51:54
After our ‘Finding gallery representation’ episode we had a bunch of interesting questions from you lovely folks that we definitely wanted to dig into deeper and answer, but we also weren’t sure we were the best people to answer them which is where the idea for this episode came from! We wanted to interview a curator and ask her your questions. We feel we were incredibly lucky that Amber said yes as she was so generous and helpful with the information she gave, we felt we learnt a lot, and we hope you do too! Find out more about Amber Creswell Bell Find out more about Michael Reid galleriesMentioned in the show:Willy Russo’s interview with Amber on ‘Interview with an Artist’Art W**k’s interview wtih AmberVisit the Fail Like An Artist  newsletter for more info on Amber plus a summary of what we talked about- too many to fit in the show notes!Find Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com or @juliebattisti Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com or @phoebeganderart Phoebe’s newsletter:Buy us a Ko-fi! Please don’t forget to rate and review! • 36. Evolving your art style

    01:13:12
This week we revisit the topic of art style. We dig into the difference between style and genre and discuss how our art styles have emerged, and where they continue to evolve. We discuss the pros and cons of wanting to try ‘everything’ and how some people seem to display a style from the get-go. Julie talks through the differences between her two styles of painting, but doesn’t want to be pigeonholed, and Phoebe shares her S.T.Y.L.E acronym that explains how her style is evolving and what things she’s let go of in order to grow. We realise that a style is not a thing that you arrive at but a continually evolving process!Mentioned in the show:Creative Pep Talk (Andy J Pizza) episodes on style:Episode 354Episode 392Laura Horn Art Podcast Susan Nethercotes PodcastBen Howard articlePhoebe’s colour mixing course “The Key To Colour Mixing” - 20% off with code ‘spring20’Newsletter: (published each week with Tuesdays episode)Facebook Group:Find Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart  & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi!
