40. Exhibition debrief & general catch up
42:10It’s been a minute since we sat down to record, and we just about forgot how to do it! This episode sees us catching up with the big life events that have been the reason for our absence. Phoebe’s trip to the UK and Julie’s visit back to Australia for her solo exhibition. We chat about the highs and lows of the past couple of months, barely scratching the surface, but at least we know there will be more episodes to come! That you for sticking with us whilst we took a pause… We hope you enjoyed this episode!PG & JBMentioned:Julie’s exhibition: Above & BelowListener Fail: Charlotte Buskin @charlottebuskinartistFind Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi! 01:12:00This week we chat with Alice Sheridan, a London based artist, one half of the popular art podcast ‘Art Juice’, and creator of the ‘Connected Artist Club’, a supportive art community full of advice, resources and workshops.Alice spoke really honestly about her failures, what struck us most how insightful she is when she looks back onto past and recent failures. There’s so much to learn from Alice’s thoughtful approach to her art making, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!Alice’s WebsiteConnected Artist Club:Art JuiceFind Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi! 51:54After our ‘Finding gallery representation’ episode we had a bunch of interesting questions from you lovely folks that we definitely wanted to dig into deeper and answer, but we also weren’t sure we were the best people to answer them which is where the idea for this episode came from! We wanted to interview a curator and ask her your questions. We feel we were incredibly lucky that Amber said yes as she was so generous and helpful with the information she gave, we felt we learnt a lot, and we hope you do too! 01:13:12This week we revisit the topic of art style. We dig into the difference between style and genre and discuss how our art styles have emerged, and where they continue to evolve. We discuss the pros and cons of wanting to try ‘everything’ and how some people seem to display a style from the get-go. Julie talks through the differences between her two styles of painting, but doesn’t want to be pigeonholed, and Phoebe shares her S.T.Y.L.E acronym that explains how her style is evolving and what things she’s let go of in order to grow. We realise that a style is not a thing that you arrive at but a continually evolving process!Mentioned in the show:Creative Pep Talk (Andy J Pizza) episodes on style:Episode 354Episode 392Laura Horn Art Podcast Susan Nethercotes PodcastBen Howard articlePhoebe’s colour mixing course “The Key To Colour Mixing” - 20% off with code ‘spring20’Newsletter: (published each week with Tuesdays episode)Facebook Group:Find Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi!35. You Asked, We Answered!
49:00This week we thought we’d try something new, so as the title suggests we asked the listeners to throw some questions at us. From our favouring artists to our favourite colours, there’s hopefully something of interest for you to listen to as we witter on... Full disclosure, we asked for questions aimed specifically at either of us but ended up just having a big ol’ pile that we picked randomly from. So sorry if we asked the wrong question to the wrong person, or if we didn’t manage to get to your question, we might just have to do another Q&A episode down the track! Keep the questions and fails coming, you can DM us a voice note @faillikeanartist on instagram and we might just play it out on the pod - Imagine that!Mentioned in the show:None of these are sponsored ( I mean, we wouldn’t say no if any of you are reading this!) ‘Read this book if you want to take great photographs” Henry CarrollGamblin Ground hereLangridge Oil PrimeMaria KempCindy RizzaDavid HockneyRic SantonArtristic Easel NewsletterFacebook GroupFind Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi!34. Navigating Comparison & Competitiveness as Artists
53:23This week on the pod we discuss the tricky subject of comparison and competitiveness. We both admit to having these feelings especially during recent times when sales have been slower, and talk openly about how it makes us feel, and how we manage things when the green eyed monster inevitably does show up. We both realise that it is completely normal to feel a level of competitiveness and comparison, and it’s not about trying to quash that, but it’s what we do with those feelings that matters. We share personal anecdotes highlighting times when we’ve caught ourselves comparing, feeling jealous when we see fellow artists succeed, and how feelings of envy can actually be signposts towards growth. We chat about the negative impact of using others’ success as a metric to compare ourselves to, how to manage social media and stop the doom scroll… and how it’s far better to lean into community rather than see others as competition. So if you’ve ever compared yourself to other artists and feelings of scarcity are creeping in, you’re not alone! This episode is one for you.PG & JB xxMentioned:How To Fail with Elizabeth Day & Brene BrownWoo-woo podcast (Very Vedic -Competitiveness, Social Media & The Status Trap)Newsletter:Facebook Group:Find Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi!
