AI & Art - Is it Intelligence or Insanity?

Season 2, Ep. 17

In this episode Phoebe and Julie open the can of worms that is AI in art. They discuss this rapidly evolving new technology and its impact in the art world. And what a messy can of worms it is! They acknowledge that with this landscape changing so rapidly, the information they share may well be out of date very quickly. They try to keep the conversation neutral however it does occasionally swerve into their own personal opinions…

They (do their best to) answer listener questions about the use of AI in art and also the concerns over copyright, how AI image generators collect their data via ‘scraping’ and the potential risks this poses to artists. Also what impact the use of AI might have to those artists who create digital or graphic design work. They acknowledge that AI can have many benefits to artists such as short cutting some mundane creative processes, or how easy it can be to create ‘original’ source images, and how text AI generators can help those who struggle with writing. They also touch on the ethical and environmental implications around AI and talk about the need for development of regulations around the creation of AI art.

We may or may not end the show with Phoebe rapping a “Fail Like An Artist” rap created by ChatGPT…

  • 42. Perceptions Around Instagram

    57:59||Season 4, Ep. 42
    This week we are chatting about perceptions. Phoebe recently reached a milestone and tipped over 100,000 Instagram followers, so we chat about how this came about after a long time little growth. We discuss how this number is a bit like being ‘rich in Monopoly’ and doesn’t mean instant sales or success. We delve into how it is impossible to predict when a reel will go viral, and also how follower count can impact people’s expectations and perceptions. We both have different ways of communicating using Instagram, but the one key similarity is that we never stray from being ourselves - sharing in a way that comes most naturally to us - and we both agree that using it to keep an up-to-date portfolio of work and building a genuine connection with your audience is far more important than follower count number. We also talk about what to do when you feel like there’s “no point” in posting because of the algorithm, and what holds artists (ourselves included) back from posting, such as worrying about how others perceive you and your art.We hope you found this week’s episode interesting, please let us know your thoughts and any questions it raised.PG & JBFind Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart  & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi! Please don’t forget to rate and review! • 41. Failing Forward - Learning To Pause Before You Start

    49:46||Season 4, Ep. 41
    This week we are chatting about how we reboot or start new artworks and art projects. We discuss the ways that we have failed at this in the past, by jumping in too quickly and not fully allowing ideas to develop, and how we both want to get better at pausing before rushing ahead. When thinking about planning, it’s no surprise that Julie is more of a spreadsheet user and Phoebe tends to use her less reliable ‘mind map’ system… We also discover the ‘interesting’ way that Phoebe visualises a year.We hope you enjoy this chat, please share with us how you like to plan and restart!PG & JBMentioned:Sarah Tasker - Letters To A Hopeful Creative Episode hereListener Fail: Sierra Roberts @sierrarobertspaintFind Julie here: www.juliebattisti.com , @juliebattisti & Julie’s newsletterFind Phoebe here: www.phoebegander.com , @phoebeganderart  & Phoebe’s newsletter:Podcast Website:Submit a question or fail hereBuy us a Ko-fi! Please don’t forget to rate and review!
