Brandon Cronenberg • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #505

Ep. 505

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by director BRANDON CRONENBERG!

If half of that name rings bells to those of you not versed too hard in the cinema world, you are indeed correct - Brandon's father is David, who you will surely be familiar with in some way! Brandon's been carving a unique niche in the horror scene with some truly psychedelic adventures in the genre, and you'll be happy to know that he goes into a lot of the technique in this chat with Pip. Honestly, you couldn't have guessed some of this stuff - and better yet, it's all in-camera (basically meaning, not computer FX). So prepare for some fantastic process talk, greater ideas within the films, and some nice action for those who saw and loved Possessor, Infinity Pool and the rest in the catalogue. As always with these chats which may seem specifically bound to a certain discipline - if you are creative in any way, or enjoy creativity - you will absolutely get a lot from this. So fear not, horror fan or otherwise - you'll love it.

    emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Roots Manuva, originally episode 63 from 2015-10-14.Perhaps the greeting on this one should be "Well(come) Well(come) Well(come)"... Your chance to re-Witness the debut appearance of Roots Manuva on the podcast, whose appearance is hugely welcome and very nice to hear again after all these years. Whether you caught onto him in recent years through his work with folk like Four Tet, or you're a head since Witness bust the UK hip hop wide open, or perhaps like me (Buddy here ✌🏼) you caught his old skool work wit IQ Procedure on Max & Dave's rap show on Kiss FM! Those were the days. I let my tape rock til my tape pop, I tell you that much. Anyway - a champion on the scene, whether you focus on the UK side of Hip Hop or the greater culture itself. This is a really nice chance to hear a great episode you might have missed.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureWITNESSONLINEINSTAGRAMPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE

    01:15:22||Ep. 604
    Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by Scotland's comic champ CHRISTOPHER MACARTHUR-BOYD!You will surely know Christopher from the Here Comes The Guillotine podcast with comedy pals Frankie Boyle and Susie McCabe (and if not, you won't go wrong by jumping in), but if CMB isn't someone you're directly familiar with, I guess the question would be... When have Scroobius Pip and the Distraction Pieces Podcast steered you wrong? Thank you. This is a really great and uplifting chat with someone who's been working his way up through the comedy game, via all kinds of paths, while receiving and heeding advice from folks he truly respects. Such humility has only done him well in the quest, and you'll hear about it all including the Fringe route, process, podcasting, the origin story, the draw of London, and altogether so much more. You'll love it. • 603. TV Shows Of The Year 2024: featuring John & Joel of The Dream Factory #603

    01:09:02||Ep. 603
    Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!An episode celebrating the past year of television, from streamers to terrestrials - it's TV Of The Year 2024 with Joe & Joel!(Producer Buddy here - I've once again recklessly recycled a previous writeup for this one because my original is still entirely apt - dates have changed for obvious reasons but otherwise - enjoy the timewarp!)Another delightful end of year TV roundup from three people who truly know and care about their televisual diet. These are names you can trust, folks. You might know John and Joel from their own film podcast called Dream Factory (the world's greatest user-generated movie creation podcast), which Pip is a true fan of and contributor to, but if not, here is your chance to get to know them and become fast friends! This podcast goes appropriately deep into the television shows of the year in a hugely positive way, but of course you'll hear about some of the trials and tribulations of being such big devourers of content - the endless options of platforms, the accessibility of them all, and everything else... But really it's a perfect way to get up to speed on the things you might have missed, and also hear people chat about the shows that we all loved throughout the year. Who knows what 2025 has in store for us... But really - who cares? This is 2024 right here! Today, we catch up with filmmaker Coralie Fargeat (The Substance / Revenge) and actor Matilda Lutz (Revenge / Magpie), originally episode 205 from 2018-05-11.Below is the original writeup for context:–––––––––––––––––––––––––A great Friday spot for you this week, as Pip sits down with director Coralie Fargeat and actor Matilda Lutz, creator and star of the indie horror film ‘Revenge’. All kinds of aspects are covered including of course the main elements of the film itself, the process of working with a smaller budget and the knock-on effects that has (and the imagination it inspires), crossings of languages and how it can help with an international release, dealing with foreign distributors, the audition process, darker entertainment from directors such as David Cronenberg, the film set out in Morocco and working in the cold, working with that amount of blood in such a small space (I’m sure a lot of horror fans’ ears just pricked up!), trusting the audience with your world and the importance of the director and actor relationship. And a lot more. A packed episode then, you could say! ENJOY! And go see the film if you get an opportunity…PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureTHE SUBSTANCEREVENGECORALIE IGMATILDA IGPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE
  • 602. Films Of The Year 2024: Pip's personal roundup of 2024's finest films #602

    01:03:16||Ep. 602
    Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip continues the Distraction Pieces tradition of appraising the cinematic output of the year just passed - it's Films Of The Year 2024!A thorough and - crucially - personal rundown of all that happened last year in the world of feature films, major and independent, big screen and small screen. The whole thing was recorded outside in the dead of Winter, so by all means don't feel like you need to mimic those surroundings. This is probably more suitable for a warm and dry environment at your leisure, but wherever you choose it's a nice way to look back in fondness on a really great year in films.It's obvious but it must be re-emphasised each year - this is not YOUR list of favourite films. It is Pip's. if Pip makes a choice, this does not remove your own choice. It does not mean you are wrong in your own choices. You know this already but you'd be surprised at how some folks might misinterpret these things. It's all love in here. Enjoy, make some notes, rewatch some goodies and maybe make some new acquaintances in the bargain. Today, we catch up with Limmy, originally episode 113 (a two parter) from 2016-08-31.Below is the original writeup for context:–––––––––––––––––––––––––Congratulations on your download. You have made the correct choice. Especially being that this week the guest is comedy giant Brian "Limmy" Limond! A perfect back and forth with Glasgow's comic mastermind Limmy (and on occasion, mainly forth as Pip joins us, the listener, and lets Limmy hold court!), combing through the action packed origin story and leading us right up to around the present day, exposing the thrilling fun times as well as revealing the deep dark lows in a thoroughly down to earth fashion, including drink, fatherhood and all that entails. Such a powerful and relatable talk, and definitely one for the Limmy heads as well as those who are perhaps unfamiliar with the man behind 'Limmy's Show' and 'Daft Wee Stories' among so much more...PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureIMDBYOUTUBETWITCHPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE

And as always with Rob, you can expect unique takes and perspectives which are inspiring, intriguing and never fail to lead to somewhere you didn't think you'd get to. • Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You / Chewing Gum / Black Earth Rising) • Friday Rewind

    01:46:10|
    emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Michaela Coel twice, originally episode 129 from 2016-12-14, and episode 238 from 2018-11-07. Below are the original writeups for context - enjoy this double feature look back in to the past with Michaela!–––––––––––––––––––––––––Part 1:From her early days knocking around Tower Hamlets in a pentecostal upbringing, and how a psalm triggered her interests in poetry, Michaela gets deep into what added up to her present day self, as a multi-talented and well respected TV heavy hitter - from her take on reading and books in general, to spirituality and where she's at with it all now, drama school, reality TV, Uber and its complex personal social code of conduct, how she was discovered on stage, right through to where we find her now as star of 'Aliens', 'Chewing Gum' (and writer of, of course) and 'Black Mirror'... A perfect and full on satisfying listen so go on and get on that immediately!Part 2:What exactly HASN’T she been doing since she was last on? Good lord… Michaela is unquestionably smashing it right now (and has been for a minute), starring in two Black Mirror episodes, feature film Been So Long, BBC drama Black Earth Rising and a lil’ indie grindhouse flick called Star Wars: The Last Jedi, no biggie. We can only dream of what she’ll be unveiling when we hopefully see her next time on here! A bunch of awesome ground is covered of course, in not that long, including her humble but confident, responsive social media outlook, carving her own paths growing up, the intentions behind any given script, not wasting time on things that don’t mean much to you, the hit series Black Earth Rising and the much loved director, heroes and villains, learning about Africa and all the education that came with Black Earth Rising, TV license and the value of it, John Goodman, handling heavier scenes and TONS tons more!
