Simple Truth vs. Swear
Season 5, Ep. 12
•
This message from James 5:12 (and Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5) calls us to a simple but weighty kind of integrity: say what you mean, and mean what you say. It’s not about avoiding certain words, it’s about becoming people whose honesty doesn’t need backup. No exaggeration, no oaths, no overpromising, just a steady, trustworthy “yes” or “no.”
It challenges us to ask: Are we believable? Do we follow through, even when it’s inconvenient? Real integrity shows up in the everyday moments, and when we live that way, our words begin to carry real weight, and reflect God’s character.

26. Gospel, Growth, & Fruit
29:50||Season 3, Ep. 26What if accepting Christ is not the finish line, but the beginning of the journey? In this episode, we explore Paul's prayer for the Colossae believers and discover God's desire not only to save us, but to transform us. Drawing on the familiar image of training a horse, we consider how spiritual growth unfolds over time. Just as a horse is not fully trained after its first lesson, followers of Jesus are invited into a lifelong process of learning, yielding, and surrendering to God's leadership.Paul prays that believers would be filled with the knowledge of God's will through the wisdom and understanding that comes from the Holy Spirit. This is more than information. It is the kind of knowledge that changes how we think, live, and respond to God each day.The standards Paul describes can feel overwhelming. Living worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him in every way, and bearing fruit in every good work may seem impossible. Yet that is exactly the point. God never intended us to accomplish these things in our own strength. He empowers us through His glorious might, giving us the endurance, patience, and courage we need for the journey.Join us as we talk about spiritual growth, surrender, and the difference between trying harder and learning to rely on God's strength. The Christian life is not about reaching the finish line on our own. It is about allowing God to do His transforming work in us, one step at a time.Scripture: Colossians 1: 9- 12
25. The Legacy We Leave
06:36||Season 3, Ep. 25Not everything handed down from one generation to the next is worth keeping. Some families pass down strong faith. Others pass down silence, patterns, or pain that echoes for years. Most of us inherit a mixture of both.In this episode, Rachel reflects on a Father's Day sermon from Deuteronomy 6 and what it means to receive a complicated story and still choose a different direction. Using the image of an old saddle hanging in her shed, she explores how grace goes ahead of us, how God starts with us exactly where we are, and why the first act of a new legacy isn't speaking. It's surrender.Whether you come from a strong foundation of faith or you're the first in your family to turn toward God, this conversation is for you.Black Hills Cowboy Church | Conversations in the Barn
24. Delightful Duty of Dads
30:13||Season 3, Ep. 24What does it take to pass faith from one generation to the next?In this Father's Day message, we explore Deuteronomy 6 and God's vision for generational faith. The passage paints a picture that reaches beyond ourselves to our children and their children. Yet the journey begins with a simple but challenging question: Is God's Word written on our hearts first?Whether you come from a long line of believers or a family history marked by brokenness, Scripture offers hope. You can become the first faithful generation. God's story in your family doesn't have to be defined by the past. It can begin today.Together, we'll discuss what it means to love God with all our heart, soul, and strength, and why faith is often caught in everyday moments rather than formal lessons. From conversations around the dinner table to challenges faced along the way, ordinary life becomes the setting where the next generation learns what it means to follow Jesus.Join us as we reflect on the beautiful responsibility of living our faith out loud and investing in a legacy that reaches far beyond our own lifetime.Scripture: Deuteronomy 6: 4- 9
23. Hope Anchors Everything
06:22||Season 3, Ep. 23We assume faith comes first and hope follows as a kind of bonus. Paul flips that order in Colossians 1: our faith and love actually grow out of hope, a settled confidence that God hasn't finished His work in us yet.In this episode, we look at Peter in Acts 10, walking into a Gentile's home before he fully understood why, and ask what that same pattern looks like in something as ordinary as a baptism Sunday. How often do we see a category where God is already at work in a person?Colossians 1: 3-5 | Acts 10
22. Focused Gratitude
25:13||Season 3, Ep. 22What if faith and love aren't the starting point of the Christian life?In this episode, we explore Paul's words in Colossians 1 and discover a surprising truth: faith and love grow out of hope. Not the kind of hope that says, "I hope things work out," but the confident assurance that our future is secure in Christ. When our hope is anchored in heaven, the challenges of today begin to look different. Broken plans, difficult relationships, and everyday frustrations no longer have the final word. Instead, we can live with confidence, knowing that our lives are held by a Savior who has already secured our eternity.Join us as we talk about what it means to live with heaven in view, why eternal perspective changes the way we love others, and how gratitude grows when we remember what Christ has done for us. If you've ever struggled to keep your footing in uncertain times, this conversation is a reminder that hope is not wishful thinking. It is the anchor of the soul.Scripture: Colossians 1:3-8
21. Attitude of Gratitude
35:10||Season 3, Ep. 21What would change if gratitude became your first response instead of your last?As we begin our study through the book of Colossians, we discover Paul's remarkable habit of leading with thanksgiving. Writing from prison to a young church facing cultural pressure and spiritual challenges, Paul begins not with complaints or concerns, but with gratitude for what God is already doing. In this message, we're challenged to develop the same practice in our own lives. What if we started our prayers with thanksgiving before presenting our requests? What if we began each day by intentionally thanking God for both the extraordinary and the ordinary blessings we often overlook? What if gratitude became the foundation of our conversations with others? When we approach God with thankful hearts, our perspective begins to change. We become more aware of His faithfulness, more content with His provision, and more confident in His promises. Gratitude is more than an emotion. It is a posture of the heart that shapes the direction of our lives.Join us as we explore the opening of Colossians and discover how a life marked by thanksgiving can deepen our faith, strengthen our relationships, and draw us closer to Christ. We'll also reflect on the ultimate reason for gratitude through communion, remembering the sacrifice Jesus made to secure our forgiveness and redemption.📍 Black Hills Cowboy Church#BlackHillsCowboyChurch #CowboyChurch #Colossians #Gratitude #Thankfulness #ChristianLiving #FaithJourney #BibleStudy #FollowJesus #Communion #BiblicalTeaching #ChristianFaith
20. Going After the One
10:18||Season 3, Ep. 20Why do people wander from faith, community, and the life God intends for them?In this episode of Conversations in the Barn, we explore James 5:19-20 and the image of wandering livestock that sits behind James' final challenge to the church. Most people don't drift away in a moment of dramatic rebellion. More often, it happens slowly through distraction, isolation, hurt, or simply choosing good things over the best things. We'll talk about spiritual drift, repentance, the people who refuse to give up on us when we wander, and why following Jesus means joining the search-and-rescue effort for others. Along the way, I'll share a personal story about my brother, reflect on a timely answer to prayer for rain here in northeast Wyoming, and consider what it looks like to help people find their way home.📖 Scripture: James 5:19-20 Conversations in the Barn is the podcast of Black Hills Cowboy Church, where we explore faith, Scripture, and everyday life from a Wyoming perspective.#ConversationsInTheBarn #BlackHillsCowboyChurch #James5 #FaithJourney #ChristianPodcast #CowboyChurch #Discipleship #SpiritualGrowth #Repentance #Grace #Wyoming #BibleStudy #FollowingJesus #ChristianLiving #Prayer
19. Ride Herd
24:02||Season 3, Ep. 19Wandering comes naturally, to cattle, sheep, and people. In this message from James 5:19-20, we're reminded that spiritual drifting is a reality for all of us. Sometimes we get distracted by good things instead of the best things. Sometimes we wander because of fear, pride, shame, or simply losing sight of the path God has set before us. Like livestock grazing toward whatever catches their attention, we can find ourselves far from where we intended to be.But God doesn't give up on wandering people. He doesn't settle for 99 out of 100. He pursues every person who has drifted, and He calls His people to do the same. This message challenges us to see the church as more than a place for fellowship and community. We are called to be part of God's search-and-rescue mission. We help those who have wandered return to the truth, the hope, and the life found in Christ. When someone is lovingly restored, the impact reaches far beyond a single moment. Lives are redirected, futures are changed, and people are brought back onto the path that leads to life.Join us as we explore God's heart for the wandering and our responsibility to care for one another along the journey of faith.📍 Black Hills Cowboy Church#BlackHillsCowboyChurch #CowboyChurch #James5 #TheWanderingSheep #ChristianCommunity #FaithJourney #FollowJesus #BiblicalTeaching #Discipleship #ChristianLiving #SearchAndRescue #ChurchFamily
18. The Snarky Prophet and the God Who Still Listens
13:00||Season 3, Ep. 18What makes prayer powerful? In this episode of Conversations in the Barn, we take a look at James 5 and the surprising example James uses to teach us about effective prayer: Elijah.Elijah called down fire from heaven, prayed for drought, and boldly confronted hundreds of false prophets. But James points us to something even more important than Elijah's accomplishments. Elijah was human, just like we are.Together we'll explore the difference between rightness and righteousness, what it means to align our hearts with God's purposes, why prayer is more about partnership than persuasion, and what we can learn from Elijah's crash under the tree after his greatest victory. We'll also talk about praying for people who have hurt us, persevering in prayer when answers seem delayed, and why the story of Elijah praying for rain feels especially relevant as many in northeast Wyoming continue to pray for much-needed moisture.Whether you're feeling spiritually strong, exhausted, discouraged, or somewhere in between, this conversation is a reminder that the power was never in Elijah. It has always been in the God who listens.Scripture:James 5:16-181 Kings 17-19If this episode encouraged you, be sure to like, subscribe, and share it with a friend.#ConversationsInTheBarn #Prayer #Elijah #James5 #Faith #ChristianPodcast #PrayerLife #SpiritualGrowth #GodsFaithfulness #ChristianLiving #Discipleship #Wyoming #CowboyChurch
