Episode 40: What Fedor means to me / Makhachev vs. Volkanovski prediction

Retiring following a second loss to Ryan Bader at Bellator 290 only makes my love for Fedor Emelianenko stronger, as I try to put into words why he's such a titan of mixed martial arts. After that, I turn my attention to two modern champions aiming to etch their name into the same hallowed ground we see Fedor's, as UFC 145lb champ Alexander Volkanovski moves up in weight for arguably his toughest challenge yet (and almost certainly his biggest) as he takes on reigning UFC 155lb champ Islam Makhachev. I give my prediction as to who will win and why, and you can read the excellent piece I mentioned on the grappling dynamics in this fight below:

"Analyzing Alexander Volkanovski's Match-up with Islam Makhachev and Challenging MMA's Myths"

and my piece on Fedor from a couple of years back describing what made his career so darn great.

  • Episode 64: Fury vs. Usyk - The Big Preview

    02:39:58
How could I not devote a huge chunk of my waking hours this week to producing a near three-hour podcast all about one fight?!  How could I not enlist some heavy hitters to talk about the biggest fight we will see all year?Well luckily for you, I did, as Rob Tebbutt of Boxing News and the boys from the Heavy Hands podcast helped me out trying to figure out just how this super-fight will play out. There's little point saying much else here as there's a LOT said in this episode: Tyson Fury versus Oleksandr Usyk will be upon us sooner than you manage to listen to this behemoth of an episode I expect. So enjoy the fight. As fights like these don't come around often.

  • Episode 62: Topuria smashes the crown off Volkanovski's head

    31:01
As per the title of this episode, Ilia Topuria showed that his run to a championship fight was no fluke and he really was as well put-together as he looked, overcoming a typically tricky Alexander Volkanovski to smash him into oblivion in the second round. As the new champion will Topuria spark the interest of fans by taking on all-comers, or will he chase uninteresting 'super' fights against the likes of Conor McGregor? I look into the fight that everyone is talking about right now as well as what the future may hold for both Topuria and the now dethroned Volkanovski, and if you want to hear my thoughts about the rest of UFC 298 please head on over to the Combat Chronicles Patreon!

    34:36
To say I was excited about former UFC middleweight champ Alex Pereira facing off with former UFC light-heavyweight champ Jiri Prochazka would be an understatement, I was certain it wouldn't disappoint. And now that the shoot-out has taken place, I'm happy to say that it didn't, bar one thing that I'm sure anyone that has seen it will already have an opinion on! Well, in this episode you'll get to hear all of my opinions on the fight, from my takes on the technical details, to my thoughts on the division overall and the current standing of both men and what we might see from them in the future. To hear more of my thoughts on UFC 295 (including the big heavyweight clash between Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich) head on over to the Combat Chronicles Patreon where the full one-hour episode is available right now!

    12:58
It seems that we all got the news we were hoping for this past week when Tyson Fury versus. Oleksandr Usyk for ALL the marbles of heavyweight boxing was apparently signed and sealed.
