In this issue of Com d'Archi, through the voice of Esther, Charles Hesters and Pierre Martin-Saint-Etienne tell us about their agency HEMAA Architectes and their project for a school in Heudebouville, France.HEMAA is a young agency that already works on all scales, from architecture to town and country planning. Because they place context at the center of their approach, their operations are infused by a soft magic, that of benefitting the inhabitants beyond the limits of their land plot. The architect becomes a builder and a composer, matching the conceptual position of the proposal to the physical situation on the site.This is evidenced by their project for a school in Heudebouville, in a remarkable site which backdrop is the hillsides of the Seine Valley. Itis at the border of two landscapes - natural with the Normandy bocage, and built, the typical village center. Une jeune agence qui, déjà, travaille toutes les échelles, de l’architecture à l’aménagement du territoire. Les deux fondateurs évoquent l’équation à trois inconnues à résoudre pour perdurer, l’importance de l’équipe, et, surtout, l’équilibre mouvant de l’architecte.Architecte : ’un artiste’ finalement ‘très sérieux’ qui doit , aujourd’hui, réapprendre le métier. Car il faut être curieux, refuser la facilité pour s’inscrire dans une économie et dans un lieu. Et même si nous n’avons aucune certitude sur l’avenir, il est nécessaire de chercher des solutions à tous les niveaux de la société. En témoigne leur projet d’école à Heudebouville, à la frontière de deux paysages — naturel avec les bocages normands, et construit, le centre de village. Gemma Milà et Corentin Berger ont tous les deux un sens de l'observation par goût scientifique. Ils décortiquent et recherchent ! A prototype building, a daring structure, an ambitious program, the new headquarters of the French National Forestry Office takes up urban, constructive and social challenges.In this Com d'Archi, written by Anne-Charlotte, based on the French interview with the two agencies, discover this innovative architecture, the largest building made exclusively of French wood.This project embodies the dualities of contemporary architecture, in a subtle harmony between tradition and disruption, heritage and urban transformation, openness and discretion.Because, according to Vincent Lavergne 'Architecture is also about breaking down walls'.How to work between city and park? How to transition from the office tower to the horizontality of the forest? How to accompany the evolution of work modes while offering each user spaces adapted to their preferences? For Samuel Poutoux and Vincent Lavergne, the human dimension has shaped the architecture as much as the urban design or the construction systems. Thus the project consists of two wings, one offering traditional, partitioned work spaces, the other collaborative spaces, linked by an interior street, a forest path. Constructive excellence does not prevent dreaming, quite the contrary.The transition between the city and the park is just as delicate, thanks to a cantilever at the tip of the plot, a structural feat for an architecture of effacement. From the park, the street appears under the bow of the building.How can the association of wood and mixed construction systems be a solution to write this complex, dense city? Mastery of a project depends on mastery of its construction.It is this motto that has driven Samuel Poutoux, architect, and Marc-Henri Maxit, economist and carpenter contractor, to create L’Atelier WOA (Wood Oriented Architecture). Since 2012, the two 'partners in crime’, and their associates, are specialists of mixed construction systems where wood plays a central role. At a time where economy of ressources is necessary, whether it be material or land, their practice articulates mixed structures and programmes.In this episode, through Esther’s voice, they talk about two of their projects sharing one plot of land.
