Protecting the Environment With GIS: Mapping WWII's Sunken Ships with Paul Heersink

Season 3, Ep. 8

This week, Ariel chats with Paul Heersink, cartographer and Program Manager for the Roads and Addresses program at ESRI Canada. Formerly, he was Production Manager of the Community Maps Program: an initiative that is aiming to build a seamless topographic basemap of Canada using contributor data, and the Roads and Addresses program aims to do the same with community-sourced data, building a navigable map of Canada with the most up-to-date information provided by those who know it best.

Paul also personally maintains and updates a map of the sunken battleships (and other naval vessels) that were downed during World War Two. Paul’s map combines two of his interests - cartography and WWII history and, though it started as a passion project outside of work, Paul has been approached by numerous organizations since publishing his data that are very interested in using it to support salvaging and reclamation efforts. The ships have been called “ticking ecological time bombs” as they are carrying crude oil, munitions, and other toxic materials that can leach into the water around them as the hulls degrade. That said, some also contain traditional treasure! Join us for a discussion about the details.

    Possible Trigger Warning. In this episode I try to make a dancey house song, I go into more details about my past in Germany, I share a couple poems I wrote about the experience, and describe some of the issues I have faced since then when presented with a reality post a blood ritual using womb blood to ward off fascism and a possible timeline where it did not go unnoticed. Oh, and Harry Potter scar pains are real. It's a bit neurospicy but also slightly interesting.Website: https://fastfrwrd.infoSolarpunk Present Patreon: https://patreon.com/solarpunkpresents

    In this Carbon Neutral Strike update from the past week, I go through my last week of rest while on medication from the strike to make music, write short stories for potential magazine publishing, make Solarpunk Presents episodes and reflect upon moments where you find soul mates both platonic and not, and queerness. Creative work is fun but it's work. Hopefully that comes across in this update!Website: https://fastfrwrd.infoSolarpunk Presents Patreon: https://patreon.com/solarpunkpresents'Hot Hot Heat' album "The After" link: https://fastfrwrd.info/product/the-after/
  • 8. 8.8 EVERYTHING FREE A TTRPG About A Moneyless World

    01:38:57||Season 8, Ep. 8
    In this episode we discuss the June poll through a thought experiment game Aleya made, played on Fastfrwrd.info, to simulate what a free revolution and a paid revolution might be like when juxtaposed, side by side, and compared for their benefits. This game is all about finding out whether or not a moneyless world can work, how it sounds and feels, and whether it can compete with the money, money, money world we know and, well, not love, but tolerate with mild socialist disdain? What do all you tanky, commie Solarpunks think? Do we throw out the dollar sign or what? Listen to find out the fate of the world and whether money wins or the dirty commie hippies win with a moneyless world that won't get up and go to work!Website: https://fastfrwrd.infoSolarpunk Presents Patreon: https://patreon.com/solarpunkpresentsTranscript: https://www.patreon.com/solarpunkpresents/posts/164162379EVERYTHING FREE Game Kit: https://fastfrwrd.info/product/everything-free-game-kitMore about:U.N.'s Report on Methane: https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/methaneRice methane reduction Project Drawdown page: https://drawdown.org/explorer/improve-rice-productionReducing rice methane with biochar: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352186425001191Reducing rice methane with crab and fish farming: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0167880924003992Reducing cattle methane with red seaweed: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2095311924003575Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needsMaslow and the Blackfoot: https://www.resilience.org/stories/2021-06-18/the-blackfoot-wisdom-that-inspired-maslows-hierarchy/
  • Carbon Neutral Strike Update 24: July 3 to 12, 2026 Creation & Solarpunk Now

    31:27|
    In this episode, I feel the effects of my Carbon Neutral Strike choices as opportunities go by and my personal life suffers. I create two short stories to try to get published and speak about that process and encourage people to make their own art. I share a couple songs I made this week and hopefully it shows all the ideas that have brought me to these songs and their lyrical material. I end up expressing my frustrations and the need I have for a world that is Solarpunk now, since Kingston is one of the first places to experience Climate Departure.Website: https://fastfrwrd.infoSolarpunk Presents Patreon: https://patreon.com/solarpunkpresentsTranscript: https://www.patreon.com/solarpunkpresents/posts/transcript-24-163613665/

  • Carbon Neutral Strike Reflections 2026

    37:36|
    In this Carbon Neutral Strike update, I reflect on the past year of striking and what take-aways I have. We discuss the specifics, the situation that surrounded the carryings on of the strike, and the path forward. Would love to get some feedback on what you thought of the previous strike updates and what emotions you think your low impact lifestyle if you practice it would have brought about if you too made monologues like me! We talk about using gas everytime I smoke, my eco journey, cruel and unusual punishment, the plastic problem, 'becasue', getting paid less than $3 USD per hour, billionaires, fornication :p, why I left Germany, struggles in community and a plea to find out how to overcome these obstacles.More about how hormones are affected by Plastic: https://www.beyondplastics.org/ask-a-scientist/plastics-hormonesWebsite: https://fastfrwrd.infoSolarpunk Presents Patreon: https://patreon.com/solarpunkpresents
  • 7. 8.7 Revisiting Solar and Lunarpunk Music

    01:22:28||Season 8, Ep. 7
    In this episode, Aleya and Ariel discuss the musical highlights of the post-punk and post-punk revival music scenes, and their influences on Aleya's teenage years and musical growth as well as whether they qualify not only as punk/post punk/revival but also solid Solarpunk or Lunarpunk. The music playlist can be found on the Solarpunk Presents Patreon where we share monthly playlist suggestions for all members including free members!There is a mistake where the lyrics for "Reptilia" by The Strokes is misquoted and it is actually from "Whatever Happened" still. Oops!Another oops, Bob Marley sings: "We FREE the people with music, can we FREE the people with music?"
