Gurriers Interview!
To call Dublin post punk five-piece band Gurriers "outspoken" could refer to a few things. They are unapologetic in their lyrics, hitting home on themes ranging from hypocricy to nihilism, extreme rhetoric, online abuse and desensitisation. Musically, they make you sit up and listen. Their live shows are electrifying, loud and alive. And they practice what they preach, having led the entire contingent of Irish artists at SXSW to pull out of the festival in protest of its sponsorship by the US army amidst its funding of genocide in Palestine and the Middle East in 2024.
I caught up with bassist Charlie McCarthy and Pierce O'Callaghan, bassist and drummer in the Gurriers to talk all about their debut album ‘Come and See’ (2024), and other things like rafter athletics, empathetic punk rock, SXSW and the surprising role Deftones and cat pictures played in the Gurriers origin story.
It was a pleasure chatting with Charlie and Pierce! I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. Find their debut album on their Bandcamp page.
This interview was recorded just before Gurriers’ excellent debut headline Canadian show at The Garrison in Toronto last month. Thank you to the Lakeview Diner for having us!

Yellow Brit Road 26 April 2026: The Last Dinner Party, The Grad Club, Marketing and Psyops
46:12|This week on the Yellow Brit Road, we bring you reviews from seeing The Last Dinner Party live, pay tribute to the Grad Club that has announced its closure, dealing another major blow to Kingston's live music scene. (PS I Love You's iconic music video for 'Get Over' was in fact shot there... and at CFRC!) We remember some beloved shows there - Death From Above 1979, Arcade Fire, The Tragically Hip (before my time). Here's the article I mentioned in the show that I wrote for Sounds Live! Magazine when the BLU Martini shut in 2024. You've no doubt heard about Geese's "psyop" to reach fans online. What does marketing look like in the age of social media? (I'm not clickbaiting, you can guess what my thoughts on this are, but listen on anyway because I got Things to say.) Music byThe Charlatans, Skindred, Jessie Ware, Man/Woman/Chainsaw, LIFE, Nxdia, The Last Dinner Party, Florence Road, Tooth, unpeople, The Astros (one of my favourite Grad Club shows), Evan Jackson (my last Grad Club show), Dry Cleaning (in Canada this week), Rosellas, Sons of Rick.Sorry about my throat. I'm gonna say I lost my voice at shows last week, because that's cooler to say.Find this week's playlist here. Try and support artists independently through buying their music, merch, going to shows! Yellow Brit Road 12 April 2026: Bieberchella (and Coachella), Gurriers Interview
01:28:50|Festival season is here! As week 1 of Coachella 2026 comes to a close, we look back at some of our favourite performances at the festival by UK and Irish artists (and Geese, because turns out I'm like that), talk about the significance of Justin Bieber's return to music at Coachella (aka Bieberchella, which as a Canadian show we feel compelled to discuss), and the incredible Dublin post punks Gurriers join us for an interview! We'd recorded this before their show at the Garrison in Toronto in March.Music this week by The xx, Blood Orange, Holly Humberstone, NewDad, CMAT, Geese (doing Bieberchella!?), Gurriers.Find this week's playlist here. Live Session: Mad Iris @ Wavelength festival!
27:32|Toronto shoegaze 5 piece band Mad Iris bring together harsh, loud guitar noise, softer, intimate sounds, both screams and whispers, while evoking a certain hazy, nostalgic 90s image that brings to mind artists like Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine. They also have a unique sound through layering up 3 guitars, all adding something new. We caught up with the band at Wavelength Festival 2026, where they performed at St. Anne's Parish, for a quick chat and live session ahead of the release of their self-titled debut album.Songs played in this session: 1. Blackjack 2. Silver Nails, 3. Daisy, Don't Take My Baby.Cover shot: Mad Iris @ St. Anne's Parish, by Owen Forbes.Touch that dial and tune in live! Live Session: Truck Violence!
40:19|This week, we are joined in session by the Montreal-based four-piece punk band Truck Violence! Truck Violence go beyond the confines of punk: drawing on influences from back home in Alberta, where vocalist Karsyn Henderson and guitarist Paul Lecours are from, the band paint visit pictures of life in the prairies with both their music and words, centred around Karsyn’s captivating poetry. Musically, they occasionally draw on country music, even featuring the banjo. The band joined us before their set at The Handlebar in Toronto to talk art, poetry, authenticity, Alberta and their 2024 debut album Violence. You will also hear 3 songs performed at that show: 1. Undressed you layn't before 2. Lecture 3. Guns buried in the front yard.Unfortunately, the only place we could record this interview was outdoors, so I apologise for the occasional street noises and jackets rustling. EQ can do a lot but it's not magic! And thank you to the band for braving -10ºC weather to chat poetry with me for 20 minutes.
