Amanda Abbington on resilience, reinvention, and choosing joy

•

Joining us today is a fearless and brilliant actress whose career has seen her light up stage and screen in everything from Sherlock to Mr. Selfridge, and whose life off-screen has been just as dramatic, heartbreaking, and inspiring as the roles she’s played. It’s the lovely Amanda Abbington!

In this episode, Amanda opens up about the defining chapters of her life so far, reflecting on the quiet end of her first marriage during one of the busiest periods of her career and how she began to rediscover herself as a single mum while navigating both the menopause and the chaos of modern dating. She also shares the story of finding love again with escapologist Jonathan Goodwin, who proposed just 30 minutes after they met, only for a life-altering accident to turn their lives upside down just weeks later. Amanda discusses Jonathan’s remarkable resilience, the strength of their love in the face of adversity, and the small, life-affirming moments that keep them going.

She also talks about her experience on Strictly Come Dancing – what led her to walk away, the storm that followed, and the importance of speaking up for herself and others. With humour, vulnerability and strength, Amanda reminds us that even in the hardest moments, joy, love and laughter are never far away.

You can catch Amanda in her new play This Is Not a Happy Room at Theatre Royal Windsor from 13–17 May.

  • NEW EPISODE: Jake Humphrey

    48:21|
By any measure Jake Humphrey is a High Performer - whether it's his highly accomplished career as a TV presenter, the TV Production company (Whisper) he co-owns with a turnover of £100m+, or the collection of podcasts under the 'High Performance' umbrella. But his story is much more fascinating than most media moguls. Several times he's walked away from the top tier jobs most presenters dream of to spend more quality time with his family. It's only when you chat to Jake that you get a real understanding of the man behind those decisions, who loves to take risks, but seems to win every time. It's a really lovely chat - with an extra special surprise at the end.Cheers!xx
  • NEW EPISODE: Billy Monger

    46:49|
How can you NOT be inspired by Billy Monger. In his new book Billy is encouraging young people to find their drive, to challenge themselves and maximise their potential. All from a young man who became a double-amputee just before his 18th birthday, but thanks to his own incredible drive, as well as the love and support of those around was quickly back in a single-seater (he actually got his race licence back just ELEVEN weeks after the accident). His honesty about his accident and his incredible passion for life and adventure are infectious - you absolutely cannot listen to this interview and not feel a new lease of life. • #500 EPISODES: Lemn Sissay & Lisa Faulkner

    44:55|
This is one of most beautiful and most emotional episodes we've ever made. It's actually from later in the first year of the podcast (October 2019) but we really wanted to play it again for you - here's how we described it at the time. Original billing for this episode: In one of our favourite episodes ever, Kate Thornton is joined by poet Lemn Sissay and actress Lisa Faulkner for a no-holds-barred discussion of foster care and adoption in the UK. Lemn and Lisa come from two vastly different experiences: Lemn was taken from his unwed mother and placed with a foster family who turned him out of their home when he was 12; Lisa adopted her daughter in 2006, and counts it as the best decision of her life. Listen for a moving lesson in love and belonging. We're working on new episodes of the podcast - and we'll be back with some more fabulous guests at the end of the summer. Cheers!x

On this episode, we’re joined by pop icon Lisa Stansfield (All Around The World). She has brought along her manager-turned-mate Rachel George, and barber-turned-bestie Lisa Eastwood for a discussion around friendship, feminism and IVF.So settle in and enjoy 40minutes (and maybe a glass of wine or two) in the company of a legend. Cheers, x
