My"TOP 50 MOVIES LIST" From 12 Years Ago! Part 1
In this special episode of WN MOVIE TALK PODCAST I invite you to join e as i rediscover an old TOP 50 MOVIES list that I compiled over 12 Years ago for an old Film Review YouTube Channel that I once run.
From cult classics to indie pics, from summer Blockbusters to historical masterpieces and through genres including War Movies, Sci-fi, Comedy, Thrillers and Horrors this list includes the work of an eclectic mix of filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Spike Jonz, Christopher Nolan, Robert Altman, Paul Verhovan, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Lynch, Martin Scorsese, The Coen Brothers and stars such as Robert DeNiro, Donald Sutherland, Mel Gibson, Dustin Hoffman, Nicolas Cage, Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, and many many more.
Well, all these years later, I am going to listen to this list, and reflect upon whether this list still holds up today, which cinematic entries would I change and which more modern movies would make the list if I was to make one today. The list is a time capsule for me, yet will it make me proud or make me cringe?

01:04:14|In this episode of WN Movie Talk Podcast, I discuss Cemetery Junction (2010), a criminally underrated coming-of-age film written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Best known for their work on The Office and Extras, Gervais and Merchant took a bold step into feature filmmaking with this poignant yet often hilarious comedy-drama, set against the backdrop of 1970s working-class Britain.I break down the film’s exceptional ensemble cast, featuring Christian Cooke, Felicity Jones, Jack Doolan, Tom Hughes, Ralph Fiennes, Emily Watson, and Matthew Goode. With a mix of rising stars and established actors, the film boasts powerhouse performances that bring depth to its themes of youthful ambition, societal expectations, and the struggle to escape small-town life.Beyond the cast, I explore how Cemetery Junction meticulously recreates the look and feel of 1970s Britain—from its soundtrack of era-defining rock classics to its depiction of blue-collar life, rigid class divisions, and changing social attitudes. This isn’t just a nostalgic trip down memory lane; it’s a film that balances humour and heartbreak in a way that deserves far more recognition than it received upon release. And of course, I reflect on Ricky Gervais’ career trajectory—how did Cemetery Junction fit within his body of work? Was it a departure from his usual comedic style, and why did it struggle to find an audience? We also discuss his later projects, from Derek and After Life to his forays into Hollywood filmmaking. If you love hidden gems, British cinema, and coming-of-age films, this episode is a must-listen!🎧 Subscribe to WN Movie Talk Podcast for more deep dives into underrated films, cult classics, Hollywood blockbusters, and must-watch indie flicks! 46:03|In this episode of the WN Movie Talk Podcast, I take an in-depth look at Hugo (2011), the visually stunning 3D masterpiece directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese. Known for his gritty, violent dramas like Goodfellas and The Departed, why did Scorsese pivot to this family-friendly adventure? We explore the director's motivations, the film’s ground-breaking use of 3D technology, and its heartfelt tribute to the magic of cinema.Based on Brian Selznick’s award-winning novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Hugo tells the story of a young orphan (played by Asa Butterfield) living in a Paris train station who uncovers the forgotten legacy of pioneering filmmaker Georges Méliès, portrayed brilliantly by Ben Kingsley. Méliès’ journey from a celebrated illusionist and filmmaker to a forgotten relic of a bygone era is deeply emotional and steeped in themes of art, creativity, and redemption—elements that resonate powerfully with Scorsese’s sensibilities and his own dedication to film preservation. The stellar cast also includes Chloë Grace Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Jude Law, with a supporting crew that brought Scorsese's vision to life—cinematographer Robert Richardson and production designer Dante Ferretti.Join me as I discuss the film’s themes, the nuanced performance by Kingsley, its place in Scorsese’s career, and why Hugo remains a timeless ode to the art of filmmaking.
