Hello people, welcome to the when in Yorkshire podcast I hope you’re well. This is episode seventy one and features one of my favourite bassists and all round delightful humans, Jason Black of Hot Water Music. Having previously chatted to Chuck and Chris, I continue my collection of this band and I absolutely loved spending time with Jason - he is a fundamental part of what makes this band so special and along with George Robelo, forms one of my favourite rhythm sections playing today. Having spent the past 30 years rocking the world and influencing countless bands, Jason is incredibly humble and still has such an infectious passion for music across multiple genres. We chat about his musical education, how the world of music has changed, writing process and the bands he’d love to tour with. We chat about split ep’s and on that note they’ve just released another split with Quicksand which is brilliant and well worth checking out. This episode was recorded on the second night of their shows at The Brudenell Social Club in Leeds with a great line up including Catbite and A Wilhelm Scream.

Episode Seventy One: Jason Black - Hot Water Music

Hello people, welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you’re well very well. This is episode seventy and features our conversation from Slam Dunk 2024 with As December Falls, The Ghost Inside, The Dangerous Summer, Mallory Knox and L.S. Dunes.This was our 4th outing at Slam Dunk North and whilst the rain came down with real force, we had a great day chatting to these bands, eating some delicious food, drinking some very nice beers and watching some awesome bands.&nbsp;Most of these conversations were followed by a quick round of everyone’s favourite Yorkshire game Quiotes although, this was our own festival version. To find out who was victorious in taking home the Yorkshire hamper, we will be posting a video featuring As December Falls, The Dangerous Summer, The Ghost Inside, Mallory Knox and the combined Reaper team of Beauty School and The Wonder Years.This group of conversations was great, the atmosphere of the festival wasn’t dampened by the soggy weather and hazardous swamp grounds. Every band we spoke to had an awesome day and praised the Yorkshire crowds which was lovely to hear. Episode Seventy: Slam Dunk 2024

Hello people, welcome to the when in Yorkshire podcast, I hope you’re all very well. This is episode sixty nine which was recorded at Slam Dunk North 2024 in Temple Newsam and features 2 of the nicest guys I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to. Both Joe and Dan have been guests individually and as not only were both of their bands playing Slam Dunk but, Beauty School had just dropped Reaper featuring Dan, I thought it would be rude not to have a chat with them.Quick disclaimer - as with all festival recordings there is substantial amount of background noise but we managed to have a great conversation covering their experience of touring together, the long relationship between Slam Dunk and The Wonder Years, Dan’s views on his role as self proclaimed elder statesman within the industry and of course how the collaboration came to be.Both bands delivered great sets at Slam Dunk North with The Wonder Years headlining the Key Club Stage and Joe made a sneaky appearance on the last song. I’ve enjoyed every Beauty School show but they have taken it up a level since the last time I saw them, and that is evident from the crowd reaction, even in the rain Leeds was having a great time. That being said Pawn Shop Jewels and Take It Slow could still do with some live maracas- and I am available.Before we get into the episode, both bands are on tour in the last part of the year in their respective countries - Beauty School are hitting the road with fellow Yorkshire rocker Jetski doing 7 consecutive day starting on 28th October at Frog and fiddle in Cheltenham then on to the Price Albert in Brighton, Signature Brew in London, Star and Garter in Manchester, EBGBs in Liverpool, The Key Club in Leeds and ending at Play Brew in Middlesbrough&nbsp;on 3rd November. The Wonder Years are going to be smashing America with The Menzingers with many dates in many places starting on October 3rd at the State Theatre in Portland Maine and ending on October 24th at Revolution Hall in Portland Oregon. U.K. fans don’t despair, they will be back at the start of 2025 with Neck Deep and One Step Closer.

Episode Sixty Nine: Joe Cabrera & Dan Campbell

Hello people welcome to the when in Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you’re all very well. This is a re recorded intro for what is the 2nd part of the slam dunk 2023 and features conversations with a few of my favourite bands from the pop punk world in the form of Four Year Strong, Less Than Jake and Bowling For Soup as well as bands I’ve only discovered recently Noah Finnce and Girlfriends. This mix pretty much shows what I love about festivals - whilst the draw buying tickets is always the bands you’ve heard of and love, the magic is when you find yourself discovering new bands. This has come round full circle at Temple Newsam as this was where I first saw Bowling For Soup in 2000 at Leeds Festival. Since this recording Noah has been slowly taking over the world and has a tour coming up in November across the U.K. so I would strongly suggest grabbing tickets as if his trajectory continues, it’s going to be a while before you see him in venues this small again.

Episode Sixty Eight: Slam Dunk 2023 Part Two

Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast I hope you’re all well. As I’m recording this, the sun has been out for 2 consecutive days and the smell of BBQs is in the air, that must mean Summer is on the way but before that we have Slam Dunk festival&nbsp;if your listen to this around the time of release there are less than 7 days before the parties of South in Hatfield and North in Leeds get underway and there are some special sets happening - including the final Festival appearance from You Me At Six, the return of The Blackout and the return of Mallory Knox, Funeral For a Friend are performing with Lucas Woodland of Holding Absence on vocal duty and then there are what I’m sure will be great sets from The Wonder Years, Pennywise, LS Dunes, Bob Vylan, Beatty School, The Bouncing Souls and so many others. Tickets are still available so if you don’t have plans for 25th ans 26th May, get involved, we will be back for our 4th year and getting very excited about it.&nbsp; This first of 2 episodes from 2023 includes Billy talent, movements, flogging Molly and trash boat. Episode Sixty Seven: Slam Dunk 2023 Pt 1 - Billy Talent / Movements / Flogging Molly / Trash Boat

Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you’re all very well. We continue to rescue episodes from the digital abyss and this is episode 66 and something I’d not tried before - as you will have likely seen, there are two guests who are not currently performing together -these are both guests from previous episodes so if you haven’t listed to these, you’ll Find Frank Turner way back in episode 10 and Chuck was with Chris Crestwell in one of the Slam Dunk Episodes.&nbsp; Before we get into this episode Frank has just released his 10th album titled ‘un defeated’ and and as I’m recording this he is midway through a world record attempt for most gigs played in 24 hours which is another crazy thing to do andy’s been done to support grassroots music venues in alliance with music venues trust. If you haven’t already pre-ordered the album, let’s show Frank some support. You can order the album from your local record store, let’s show them some support too. Let’s not forget hot water music their latest album Vows, comes out on 10th of May.They’ve released a load of singles so far and everyone has genuinely been great - I’m massively excited for this album.&nbsp; This episode was probably the least talking I’ve ever had to do. I genuinely forgot that I was involved in any way and just sat back and enjoyed these two chatting together accounting old times.

Episode Sixty Six: Frank Turner & Chuck Ragan

Hello People! welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, this is episode sixty five and it was recorded a long time ago -&nbsp;coming up to a year, I thought I’d lost it but thanks to some technical wizardry it was recovered, this features the incredibly talented Jack Bennett, a music producer, vocalist for Lonely The Brave and also goes by the Gumblebee moniker for his solo work.&nbsp; We recorded this at the Key Club before Lonely The Brave rocked Leeds. If you’re not familiar with Jack and his work, I have put links to his social media sites - if you’re into the production side of music then lapwing studio is a treat - there are a loads of photos and videos of Jack at work as well as a series of live videos of Lonely The Brave playing there which are all well worth watching / listening to. For anyone who has stumbled across this episode and doesn’t know, Lonely The Brave are an English alternative rock band mostly based in Cambridge. After multiple ep’s and 2 albums, original vocalist Dave Jakes stepped down and Jack joined the the band - since then they have released The Hope List in 2021 and then more recently, What We Do To Feel, which is great. Episode Sixty Five: Jack Bennett - Lonely The Brave / Grumblebee

Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you’re well very well. We have another rescued episode and one that I genuinely thought had been lost forever. This is episode sixty four and features Katie and Thom from the now chart topping band The Lottery Winners.&nbsp;We had a chat in York whilst they were on tour with the also chart topping Frank Turner.&nbsp;Before speaking to Kate and Thom, I kept hearing about The Lottery Winners as they just seemed to be constantly supporting a huge range of bands which in itself isn’t unusual for a band that loves playing live and will take every opportunity to get in-front of new crowds but the fact that all of these bands raved about how great they were made me take more notice.Then after checking out the tour diary from their dates with Tom Jones as well as the video for Start Again, featuring Frank, I was pretty hooked and then there was the Knickelback Rockstar sea shanty. At that point they joined the list of hopeful future guests. All I can say is they did not disappoint, I enjoy all of these chats but I don’t think I’ve laughed as much in a recording as I did in this so I apologise but it was loads of fun and The Lottery Winners are an absolute force live. Episode Sixty Four: Katie & Thom - The Lottery Winners

Hello people! Welcome to the when in Yorkshire podcast I hope you’re all well. This is episode 63 and another episode that has rescued from the digital abyss where is was being held captive for the past 12 months and I’m very excited to finally release it. This episode features guitarist Will McGonagle of Symposium and Hell Is For Heroes. Before I get into this episode I will shout out that Hell Is For Heroes are about to go out on tour hitting&nbsp;Bristol Fleece 3rd AprilGlasgow Garage 4th AprilManchester Academy 5th AprilLondon Electric Ballroom 6th April There are limited tickets still left for most dates so got on your internets and buy em. As a bonus treat, previous guest Tom Campbell will be working his light based magic and make them look awesome too. Whilst all the guests I have on here are people I think have interesting stories and I’m generally a fan of their work, every now and then I’m lucky enough to spend time with someone whose work has had a significant impact on me and this is absolutely one of these times. I enjoyed Symposium when they were first around and have certainly developed a greater appreciation for what a force they were, especially live but Hell Is For Heroes had a huge influence on me as a musician and were / still are one of my favourite bands to see live. I’m please to report that based on spending an hour with him, Will is a fricking delightful person and I would go for a curry with him. The list of gigs he attended back in the early to mid 90’s is amazing and was great hearing about his experiences with record labels as well as many other stories. Enjoy.
