Winds of Change
Episode 1
Welcome to the first episode of the Winds of Change Podcast. This podcast tells the story of the Winds of Change project which is working to instal a wing-sail onto a ship. Wind propulsion, sometimes called wind assist, systems are increasingly being seen as a way for modern shipping to use wind to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels (fuel oils and marine diesel).
Through the story of the Winds of Change podcast this series will highlight the passion and drive to introduce new technologies into an industry which is famously slow to adapt to change, and why such solutions are needed.
Narrator and host Craig Eason talks to the people in the project to understand the technology, to hear what needs to be done to build a system that has never been built before and convince a shipowner that it is perfectly sensible to put it on their vessel.
In this episode he talks to Diane Gilpin from Smart Green Shipping, who is undoubtedly the force for change in the project and to project partners Professor Dominic Hudson at Southampton UNiversity, about the history of modern wind propulsion and testing with models and Arun Pillai from Houlder a UK-based engineering and design firm about all the pre-work that needs to be done even before the detailed engineering can start.

19:21|In this fifth episode of the Winds of Change podcast Smart Green Shipping's FastRig gets shipped to Barrow and installed on its host vessel Pacific Grebe to be put through its tests in the Irish Sea. Then the vessel sails to Southampton to showcase the technology, showing everyone what modern wind propulsion looks like.WoC podcast host and leading maritime technology journalist Craig Eason talks to Barbara McIntyre, an engineering expert at Caley Ocean Systems about getting the installation right, to make sure it can withstand what the Britsh weather could throw at ship and rig. He also meets up with SImon Walley at Argo Engineering Systems while in Southampton to talk about the sea trials, and catches up with Smart Green Shipping owner and driving force for the project Di Gilpin to get her reaction to seeing decades of dreaming and scheming become a reality on a ship's deck. The Winds of Change podcast is part of the UK funded WInds of Change project.

17:38|This podcast tells the story of the UK-funded Winds of Change project which is working to install a wing-sail onto a ship. Wind propulsion, sometimes called wind assist systems, is increasingly being seen as a way for modern shipping to use wind to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels (fuel oils and marine diesel).Through the story of the Winds of Change podcast this series will highlight the passion and drive to introduce new technologies into an industry which is famously slow to adapt to change, and why such solutions are needed. In this episode of the Winds of Change podcast, we hear from three doctors.Dr. Martyn Prince is in charge of the model testing tank at Southampton University where a model of Pacific Grebe was now been tested to get the hydrodynamic data.Dr. Joe Banks at the University of Southampton is an expert on modeling and how to use the data from the ship and Smart Green Shipping's FastRig to get the correct modelsDr James Mason at Smart Green Shipping brings this all together to get the performance models to help predict how the ship and rig will work in reality and then couple this with weather routing to ensure the ship can get the most out of the systemGavin Allwright, secretary general at the International WIndship Association talks about the reason for doing this in a standard way to ensure shipping folk can compare and contrast and find the right system for the right ship.Host: Craig Eason
Episode 3
17:45|The Winds of Change project is funded by the UK Department of Transport's Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition which is helping fund the trial of the Smart Green Shipping Fastrig design. This episode follows the installation of the rig in Hunterston and the trials it will be put through before being dismantled and installed on a UK-flagged vessel, Pacific Grebe. We hear from the designers, Tom and Rob Humphreys and from Argo Engineering as well as the CEO of Smart Green Shipping, Di GilpinFor more details, along with videos and photographs of the test installation in Hunterston, Scotland visit https://smartgreenshipping.com/
