Every November, fires are lit across Britain in memory of the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, but the traditions surrounding the Fifth of November go far beyond Guy Fawkes. In January 1879, a canal labourer travelling through rural Staffordshire claimed that a strange black creature with enormous white eyes leapt onto the back of his horse near a lonely canal bridge. When he tried to hit it with his whip, the lash supposedly passed straight through its body.
