What Women Want with Amy Annette

2. Attention: Helen Bauer, Rosie Jones (Daddy Look At Me)

Season 2, Ep. 2

Here she is again. Sneaking back into your feed. Hoping the last ep didn't remind you to unsub. Join Amy (me) as she (me) attempts to corral the true forces of nature that are comedians Rosie Jones and Helen Bauer to talk about 'attention'. Do you want it? Sure. But what does it feel like when you get it? and are you getting the 'right' kind of attention.... It's feminism, it's the Princess Diaries, It's the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, It's Helen getting annoyed that she wasn't allowed to summarise someone else's podcast at the end. It's a good, good time.

  • 5. 5. Taking up Space from 'I Call Myself A Feminist with my Elbows'

    12:02||Season 2, Ep. 5
    Ok ok it's just little old me, but I'm reading an essay I wrote in the critically acclaimed book 'I Call Myself A Feminist' . The essay collection was reprinted in a second format after being featured in Stylist, Dazed magazine, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Independent on Sunday, The Herald, Independent and more. Of thebook Sarah Millican remarked, ‘I’ve read six pages and already learned loads about myself’. (we hope it was my six pages, and isn't that just the most honest and best quote 'I've read six pages'...) It's just about 10 mins.... any longer and we'd need something to deal with all this sincerity... so pop it on, get on that loo, finish that wordle, fold those fitted sheets, and I'll see you next week.

  • 7. 7. *BONUS* How to Start: Sara Barron, Tessa Coates

    42:09||Season 1, Ep. 7
    A little bonus studio episode to say goodbye to Season 1. Sara, Tessa and Amy ask if What Women Want is just to start!. What does it even mean to start things? What's holding us back? Sara talks breaking things down, Tessa visualises a table and we all talk about Frasier. Recorded in studio at Acast.*The quote about the gap between your taste and what you are making is from Podcast King Ira Glass... and it's pretty ON POINT."Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”
