We Need To Talk… with Dr. Darcy Sterling

Surviving Divorce with Alex Kapp

Season 1, Ep. 26

Divorce isn’t a topic I discuss regularly.

It’s not that I’m in denial.

But as a relationship therapist, people generally come to me to avoid the D word.

However, once divorce is on the table, guiding my client through the process can feel like we’re a team of two in need of more support.

Which is why today’s guest, Alex Kapp, was so perfect for this discussion.

She’s part of an emerging profession of divorce coaches.

And what they do is fill a gap in the process of divorce that is so wide, I can’t believe they haven’t been around for decades.

In this episode you’ll hear:

  • What your attorney should and shouldn’t do for you.
  • The importance of creating a divorce strategy because it should guide every decision you make.
  • Why leaning on your attorney for emotional support could compromise the outcome of your divorce.

Even if you’re never going to get divorced (and I hope that’s true), this is such an interesting episode I encourage you to listen!

xo

Network.Today, I’m talking to her about how being a celebrity has impacted her personal life. • 44. Mental Health In Dance & Competitive Sports

    01:04:28||Season 1, Ep. 44
    Being a therapist wasn’t my dream job. Being a dancer was. But I came to dance late — just before my 18th birthday — ancient by dance standards. Still, I was determined and auditioned to be a dance major in college. Dance training shaped me more as a person than as a dancer. Dance taught me discipline, perseverance, and the ability to tolerate failure. From the beginning, I knew I had to work twice as hard as everyone else because I started so late. The mental toughness I learned as a dance trainee is the reason for every success I’ve experienced in my life. But it wasn’t all good. The dance world can be dark, and I didn’t walk away unscathed. There’s a "tough love" mentality that gets passed down from one generation to the next, leaving many dancers with emotional scars.The relentless drive for perfection often leaves dancers dealing with anxiety, body image struggles, and levels of insecurity that can follow them for life.If this sounds familiar to you, it’s because dance shares many of the same pressures and psychological challenges as competitive sports. Today’s guest knows this all too well. Dr. Chelsea Pierotti is a former professional ballet dancer turned sports psychologist. She understands the emotional wounds that can come from both dance and sports and is here to talk about the mental health challenges in these high-pressure environments.In this episode, you’ll learn:The psychological toll that comes with competitive sports.The warning signs that a training environment is crossing into unhealthy territory.How athletes and dancers can build resilience without internalizing the message that they need to suffer for excellence. 31:06||Season 1, Ep. 43
    In an era defined by globalization and digital connection, long distance relationships have become increasingly common, but no less challenging. From managing loneliness and navigating intimacy, to the inevitable communication hurdles that come from having different time zones and schedules, long distance relationships make the usual relationship hurdles seem quaint. That said, LDR’s are 100% possible, and in this episode, you’ll learn:Why the way we communicate when we’re in close proximity DOES NOT WORK when you ARE long distance (and what to do instead). How to use new technology to bridge distance between you and your long distance partner (it’s not what you think).  Creative ways of getting your sex on no matter how many miles are between you.AND… I debunk the most common myths about long distance relationships. Xxoo DarcyREFERENCEShttps://www.gottman.com/blog/the-magic-relationship-ratio-according-science/CREDITS“We Need To Talk With Dr. Darcy Sterling” is a Sterling Standard Production. • 41. Why You’re Asking Too Much Of Your Partner

    06:55||Season 1, Ep. 41
    The modern marriage ideal suggests that we find a partner to help us become our best selves. But we also want a partner to make us feel loved, safe and secure — and that means accepting the current version of us. The person we are today. To help us become tomorrow’s version, we place a partner in a double bind where they have to acknowledge a difference between today’s version and the version of us we’re capable of becoming. For that, they need to be able to see us through a critical lens. And that can be very tough. Both on the receiving end and on the messenger’s end. Lots of us say we want feedback, but most of us can’t handle it. In this episode, I’m going to: Reveal the paradox of the modern ideal marriage.Challenge you to question whether we ask too much of our partners. Encourage you to prioritize:  Your need for unconditional love  Finding a partner who will help you grow.Xxoo DarcyCREDITS“We Need To Talk With Dr. Darcy Sterling” is a Sterling Standard Production. • 40. Canceling You Family with Dr. Joshua Coleman

    52:33||Season 1, Ep. 40
    The threads that bind us to our families have begun to feel optional in recent years. And in our culture of social media — where anyone with a phone can proclaim themselves to be an expert on subjects that they have no training or qualifications in — influencers are everywhere, some of them encouraging followers to end what they deem to be toxic relationships, or to break unhealthy cycles, or to rethink the obligation of being in our closest relationships. I am a fan of healthy relationships. And when they become exploitive, manipulative or harmful, I am OK with someone making the decision to exit the relationship — even when it’s with a family member. I am truly torn when it comes to family estrangement. I know first hand the wounds that come from being in a painful relationship. I understand why someone would make the decision to step away. And as a therapist and a human being, I’ve seen the cost people pay when they lose their tribe. Joining me in this discussion is Dr. Joshua Coleman, author of the book Rules of Estrangement. Dr. Coleman is a psychologist in private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area, and he has carved out a specialty in family estrangement.  In this episode you’ll learn:The #1 cause of family estrangement.  How well-meaning friends and family tend to exacerbate estrangement. The biggest mistakes people make when they’re trying to reconcile. AND… Dr. Coleman gives us his greatest tool for those who want to bridge the gap between themself and a loved one they’re cut off from. Xxoo DarcyREFERENCESIs Cutting Off Your Family Good Therapy?
