Introducing Dire Straits

Season 4, Ep. 1

All the late night bargains have been struck

Between the satin beaus and their belles

Prehistoric garbage trucks

Have the city to themselves

Year Two, Season Four. It's time to take side step from the heavier stuff and get into the colours and shapes that Mark Knopfler and the rest of Dire Straits bring to the musical landscape. Five albums in seven years and then a six year gap until their final record saw Dire Straits release some of the most iconic songs of the 80s. Is there a riff that defines that decade more than Money For Nothing? Is there a more instantly recognizeable keyboard intro than Walk of Life? Maybe a little 1984 synth intro from a band Corey knows well, but besides that, probably not! Will Kev go under a 5 on the Haskin Scale for any song in this catalogue? Will Corey's ear bend to the finger-picking style of the band's unlikely headband-sporting frontman?

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and get your chicks for free.

    02:00:20||Season 5, Ep. 7
    Metal health will drive you mad!!! Or, it might cure your crazy... we're getting mixed messages this week from the humble, very shy frontman of Quiet Riot, Kevin DuBrow. It's an all out frontal assault of guitars, drums, bass, and Kevin DuBrow. But what will Kev think of a cover of a beloved Slade tune? Will Quiet Riot be able to withstand the loss of Randy Rhoads in Corey's eyes? And what nonsense will Kev have for us in this week's game?The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and band your head.Songs covered in this episode: "Metal Health", "Cum On Feel the Noize", "Don't Wanna Let You Go", "Slick Black Cadillac", "Love's a Bitch"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash
  • 1. Therapy? - Troublegum

    02:06:34||Season 0, Ep. 1
    It's the very first of our Ko-Fi Member Selections and first up, from our good pal Ruddy Rutherford, is Therapy?'s 1994 release, Troublegum. The album was shortlisted for the 1994 Mercury Music Prize and is brand new to both Corey and Kev, so it was a brand new, fresh listen for both chaps! But what will Kev like a cover of a Joy Division song? Will Corey's North American rock sensibilities be challenged by a band from Norn Ireland? And where will the album finish in our overall rankings?The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and forget about that!Songs covered in this episode: "Knives", "Screamager", "Hellbelly", "Stop It You're Killing Me", "Nowhere", "Die Laughing", "Unbeliever", "Trigger Inside", "Lunacy Booth", "Isolation", "Turn", "Femtex", "Unrequited", "Brainsaw"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash
  • 6. Pyromania - Side B

    01:46:05||Season 5, Ep. 6
    Corey is still reeling from Kev's score for Side A but at least the boys have the betting system for the game sorted out now. Right??? Corey loves a song about erectile dysfunction but will he be anamoured of a song Joe Elliott dismissed out of hand? Will Kev find anything positive to say about any of the songs on Side B and will we still have a podcast after this episode???The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and make it electric!Songs covered in this episode: "Foolin'", "Rock of Ages", "Comin' Under Fire", "Action! Not Words", "Billy's Got a Gun"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash
  • 5. Pyromania - Side A

    02:02:03||Season 5, Ep. 5
    Well, the day has finally arrived. Kev can't duck it any longer. Corey is making him listen to Def Leppard critically and putting aside all his previous biases to the best of his ability. There's plenty chat about harmonies and whether you should let a drummer with functional arms actually use them, or whether you should bypass him entirely and outsource his job to a computer. Will Corey's nostalgia carry the day and what will Kev think of the lyrical content of this side of the record? The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and rock til you drop!Songs covered in this episode: "Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)", "Photograph", "Stagefright", "Too Late for Love", "Die Hard the Hunter"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash
  • 4. Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This - Side B

    01:21:04||Season 5, Ep. 4
    Side A was a bit of a mixed bag, so can Dave and Annie turn the boys around and bump their overall standing up a little? We start this side of this record with one of the most instantly recognizeable songs of all time. The rest, I bet most of you have never heard! Will Kev be consistent on his cricitism of repetition, especially in season 3? Will Corey last 'til the end of the side with barely a guitar being plucked? And will Kev finally crack the code to winning at his own game?The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and almost hear them breathing.Songs covered in this episode: "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", "Jennifer", "This Is the House", "Somebody Told Me", "This City Never Sleeps"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash
  • 3. A Twisted Christmas

    01:18:16||Season 5, Ep. 3
    Merry Christmas ya filthy animals!!! Are you ready to jingle your bells? Are you ready to roast your chestnuts? Are you ready to twist your sister??? We're ranking the tracks on an album that no-one asked for, but Twisted Sister delivered anyway! That's right, it's A Twisted Christmas and we're all over it, under it, and around it. But how will our two intrepid podcasters feel about an album full of Christmas songs by a hard rock/glam metal outfit? Will it get the thumbs up, or will Kev and Corey think that "This pretentious ponderous collection of religious rock psalms is enough to prompt the question, 'What day did the Lord create Spinal Tap, and couldn't he have rested on that day too?"The only way to find out is to come ye to Bethlehem!Songs covered in this episode: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "Oh Come All Ye Faithful", "White Christmas", "I'll Be Home for Christmas", "Silver Bells", "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow", "Deck the Halls", "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)", "Heavy Metal Christmas (The Twelve Days of Christmas)"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash
  • 2. Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This - Side A

    01:36:57||Season 5, Ep. 2
    Unplug those guitars, grab your synthesizers and head into the avante garde world of dark electro pop. There's a manequin head involved in this week's episode that's really upset Corey and his family. We talk about virtuosos we've covered on this show to this point and if there are any coming up this season. We also discover the new game format that Kev has dreamed up. Unfortunately, he REALLY hasn't thought it through so thank gods Corey is around to sort it all out! Will Corey be on board with Dave Stewart's electro-noodling? Will Kev quit touching himself, despite numerous requests for cessation from Corey? And what will the boys make of the most different album side they've covered to date?The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and stumble in the debris.Songs covered in this episode: "Love Is a Stranger", "I've Got an Angel". "Wrap It Up", "I Could Give You (A Mirror)", "The Walk"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash
  • 1. Introducing 1983

    42:03||Season 5, Ep. 1
    We're going back in time. 41 years to be precise. And we're damn well staying there!!! It's not a single-artist catalogue this season, but the brilliant inception of this daring and radical format twist from Corey sees us covering 10 records from 1983. For your delectation this season we have... Sweet Dreams: Eurythmics Pyromania: Def Leppard Metal Health: Quiet Riot Sports: Huey Lewis and the News Lick It Up: Kiss Shout At The Devil: Motley Crüe Colour By Numbers: Culture Club She’s So Unusual: Cyndi Lauper Rebel Yell: Billy Idol The Great Kamikaze Syndrome: Slade What will Corey make of the synth-led pop stylings of Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox? Will Kev get over himself and just enjoy a bit of mindless hair metal? What is hair metal anyway? And are any of the bands in our list part of it?The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and cry "More! More! More!"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclashThanks to our KoFi subscribers Ruddy Rutherford, Steve Ursell, and Josh Caldwell
  • 16. Dire Straits Live (with Michael J Smith)

    02:03:08||Season 4, Ep. 16
    Look, we just need a last little bit of Knopfling before we close the book on Dire Straits and move onto Corey's mad idea to cover TEN (yes that's T.E.N.) albums by different artists in Season Five. Kev's pretty sure this is just Corey wanting to hang onto the season for as long as humanly possible but hey, it should be damn good fun!Before then, we decided to bring in the Quizmaster from last week, Michael J Smith to talk Live Dire Straits. We couldn't decide between the two major live releases before the band split, so we're covering all the official live releases! That's right, both Alchemy and On The Night are up for discussion, as well as the 1978-1992 boxset, and we're gonna be building our perfect Dire Straits live set! Will Corey include Twisting By The Pool? Will Kev stray a long way from his ten song selection from last week? And will Michael last a full episode having to put up with these two Canidiots?The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and Knopfle a while!Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash
