Wilma Rudolph is not a name that is commonly known when US Olympians are talked about. She should be. Wilma Rudolph overcame extraordinary personal adversity in her childhood whilst black America suffered segregation. She rose to international fame becoming one of the stars at the Rome Olympics. On her return home she set about contributing to the fight for equality and paving the way for black woman in athletics.
