In this episode of Book Club | Michelle Ford Interviews, I’m joined by Sunday Times bestselling author T.M. Logan to talk about his latest thriller, The Weekend.
Six old friends head to a converted farmhouse in the Yorkshire Dales for a New Year’s Eve weekend. During a walk, they’re caught in a storm and take shelter in an old lead mine. There, they make an extraordinary discovery: a backpack containing more money than they’ve ever seen.
Of course, they know they should hand it straight to the police.
But as the storm continues and the weekend unfolds, temptation starts to take hold. Each of the friends has their own problems — debt, obsession, career worries and secrets — and suddenly that seemingly simple decision becomes much more complicated.
As cracks begin to appear in the friendships, The Weekend becomes a tense exploration of trust, betrayal, greed, friendship and the choices we make when we think nobody is watching.
T.M. Logan is the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Holiday, The Curfew, The Catch, The Daughter, Lies and 29 Seconds. His thrillers have sold more than three million copies in the UK and have been translated into more than 20 languages. The Holiday was selected for the Richard & Judy Book Club and adapted into a four-part television drama, while The Catch was also adapted for television.
In our conversation, we talk about the fascinating “what would you do?” dilemma at the centre of The Weekend, the psychology of temptation, whether we ever really know our closest friends, and why moral grey areas make such compelling thriller territory.
T.M. has said that the idea was inspired partly by his fascination with the choices people make when faced with a difficult moral dilemma - and by thrillers such as Scott Smith’s A Simple Plan.
