A Reform pact is the Tories’ only path back to power

•

In Sunday’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley discuss the Conservative Party conference with Tony Diver, the Political Editor.

They look at where the Tories stand in the polls and discuss what it needs to do to claim back its position as the opposition party in the eyes of the public. Tony outlines the tactical dilemmas facing Kemi Badenoch and her party, and whether a post-election deal with Reform UK may prove necessary to claim a majority at the next general election.

Meanwhile, Nick Tyrone, the author of The Rise of Reform, joins Camilla and Tim to examine the party’s influence on the Conservatives in the run up to the 2024 general election and beyond. Mr Tyrone identifies Robert Jenrick’s Thatcherite economic vision as the party’s driving direction, and suggests that a strategy of targeted campaigning in Conservative and Reform heartlands could recreate Boris Johnson’s 2019 election win.

  • Burnham’s broken Britain: PM’s socialist dream quickly turning into a nightmare

    35:42|
On the day that hundreds of prisoners are released early and the UK’s “one in, one out” migrant deal with France ends, The Daily T examines the state of the nation under Andy Burnham.Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley discuss the paradox of a Prime Minister who wants more devolution while pushing for a referendum on rejoining the EU and following the rules set by Brussels.Tim suggests Mr Burnham’s push for proportional representation could be to the detriment of the Labour Party, saying it is more important to him to have a permanent coalition centre-Left establishment in Britain than it is for Labour to win majorities.Camilla and Tim also note the shift in Labour’s policy regarding Israel and Palestine marked by the absence of Ed Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, from the Labour Friends of Israel event and the lack of comment from the Prime Minister so far on the Flydubai hijacking attempt.► Subscribe to our new Daily T YouTube channel: youtube.com/@dailytpodcast► Get more exclusive Daily T content from The Daily T+ membership! • No hope! Was Burnham’s teary speech just ‘performative politics’?

    43:55|
In Tuesday’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley review Andy Burnham’s first Labour Party conference speech as Prime Minister. They discuss the list of expensive promises made by the PM, including his announcement of a National Care Service, new legislation to allow councils to acquire empty homes, and a pledge to scrap the triple lock pension after the next election. They also discuss the Prime Minister’s desperate desire to return to the 1970s, his dislike for Margaret Thatcher, and the “rose-tinted glasses” through which he sees Gordon Brown’s legacy.Plus: are labradors and ale really part of a “far-Right” fantasy that “never really existed”, as one Labour minister protests?► Subscribe to our new Daily T YouTube channel: youtube.com/@dailytpodcast► We want to hear from you!
