US President Donald Trump was ready to confront Europe over one frozen island: Greenland. He threatened tariffs on 8 EU nations that opposed his plans and there was even chatter of using US military power to secure America’s position in the Arctic. Then, after a key meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, everything changed. The military option vanished. The tariffs were suspended. Trump suddenly reversed course.
