38.1 The French Connection | William Friedkin's Rise and Fall Trilogy

Ep. 134
•

The pod-brothers are back, and this time they’re hitting the mean streets of New York for the first instalment of William Friedkin's Rise and Fall Trilogy! This week Matt and Tyrie dive into Friedkin’s landmark 1971 thriller The French Connection - a picture about cops, criminals, obsession, and one of the greatest car chases ever put to film.

The boys discuss Friedkin’s meteoric rise, the film’s gritty, documentary-style approach to New York, and the endlessly fascinating cat-and-mouse game between Popeye Doyle and Alain Charnier. Along the way, they unpack Gene Hackman’s ferocious performance, the film’s morally murky view of policing, and of course, Ice Age.

  • 136. 38.3 Sorcerer | William Friedkin's Rise and Fall Trilogy

    01:44:08||Ep. 136
    Your favourite pod-brothers are back and after last episodes 'fall' (Matt misunderstood The Exorcist and also screwed up the audio) they are on the rise again! Join Tyrie and Matt as they traverse the death-defying, white-knuckle heights of Sorcerer, the film that some argue is Friedkin's best, but which also undoubtedly stunted his career going forward. The troubled (some say cursed) production is discussed in detail, along with the terrible reception that marked Friedkin's fall...at least until this film rose again as the overlooked masterpiece that it is! Also discussed: Matt's recent trip to the library. Follow us at @tripod_showGet in touch at mattandtyrie@gmail.comArtwork by Jack Mierswww.jackmiers.com@jackmiers@jackandjosh
  • 135. 38.2 The Exorcist | William Friedkin's Rise and Fall Trilogy

    01:08:58||Ep. 135
    Well folks, after an un-announced 2 week break, the boys are back and they have fundamentally forgotten how to podcast. Peaking audio, repeated questions, shallow analysis, over-lapping dialogue, arguments and (on Matt's part) a COMPLETE misreading of the film. But that's okay...it's not as if The Exorcist is a seminal work of cinematic art and history. Just like the film itself, it seems as if the Devil has gotten his cloven hooves into this humble episode of Tripod. Enjoy...if you dare! • 132. 37.3 Barton Fink | The AmeriCANNES Trilogy

    01:34:50||Ep. 132
    The most cryptic and dreamlike film by the Coen's by a country mile (for old men). It's Barton Fink! The boys are feeling jolly to be talking about the Coens, but they were also jolly about the return of Christina Costigan who brings her expertise (and some wine) to this weeks episode. The pod-brothers are back, and this time they’re heading to the sweaty, complicated world of Baton Rouge for the first instalment of the AmeriCANNES Trilogy! This week Matt and Tyrie dive into Steven Soderbergh’s landmark debut Sex, Lies, and Videotape, released August 4, 1989 — a film about marriage, infidelity, intimacy, and one very strange man with a camcorder.The boys discuss Soderbergh’s meteoric rise, the film’s commentary about sex, and why sometimes talking about sex can be considerably more uncomfortable than actually watching it. Along the way, they unpack the tangled relationships between Ann, John, Cynthia and Graham, the film’s voyeuristic obsession with honesty, and its enormous influence on American independent cinema.Follow us at @tripod_showGet in touch at mattandtyrie@gmail.comArtwork by Jack Mierswww.jackmiers.com@jackmiers@jackandjosh

    01:11:39||Ep. 129
    I WANT YOUR SEX is the latest film from queer cinema pioneer Gregg Araki, his first in 12 years, and the boys are gonna talk ALL ABOUT IT! It's an erotic comedy about a relationship that forms between Gen Z'er Eliot and his boss Erika and it begs the question: is Gen Z having enough sex? Matt and Tyrie managed to get tickets at the 2026 Melbourne International Film Festival and they had a hell of a time.
