The Three Ravens Podcast
Local Legends #34: Ailsa Clarke and Bethan Briggs-Miller
On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin is joined by the hosts of the Eerie Essex podcast, Ailsa Clarke and Bethan Briggs-Miller!
Ailsa and Bethan have been at this here podcasting malarkey since the pandemic, and it’s highly likely that you are already familiar with Eerie Essex. If you’ve never had the pleasure to listening to them though, well, you’re in for a treat!
In this episode Ailsa, Bethan and Martin talk about everything from lasagne to garden centres to demonic possession, getting lost in underground caves, and Matthew Hopkins, Witch Finder General.
As you will hear, both Ailsa and Bethan have really interesting backgrounds and educational journeys to where they are today, but part of the reason we love Eerie Essex though is because of its warmth.
Yes, episodes frequently contain ideas that might make you soil your britches with fear.
And yes, the research Ailsa and Bethan engage in is really thorough.
But, more than anything, it's the cosy, generous, very funny tone of their podcast that we find to spellbinding.
If you want to know more about Eerie Essex and listen to the podcast, just search for Eerie Essex on your favoured podcast app and you’ll find it.
Alternatively, if you would like to know more about, and possibly visit, the East Anglian Folklore Centre, for which Bethan is serving as Co-Director, you can learn more about it at eastanglianfolklorecentre.co.uk
For now though, gather in close around the Three Ravens campfire for a conversation which ventures from caves full of smuggler’s treasure to a forest full of nightmares, from rural to urban, and from the Roman era right up to the modern day.
We really hope you enjoy it, and will be back on Monday with our brand new County Episode all about the history and folklore of Rutland!

Dog Days: Chapter 4 - New Fancies’ Shapes
37:52||Season 1589, Ep. 4Reunited with his sister, who he really wishes would go back to Canterbury, the fourth episode of Dog Days sees Kit Marlowe following up on his wishes to have, in a list of descending priority, tobacco, breakfast, and a sword of some kind - even if it's purely a show piece. This takes him across London Bridge and into Southwark, to The Rose, a rival playhouse and the domain of Philip Henslowe. Henslowe is canny, an eye ever to his books, but he may have a blind spot - for the workers at the brothel attached to his theatre are scared: brutal murders are taking place around them, and these crimes seem more like the work of monsters than men...Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Dog Days: Chapter 3 - The Shining Palace of the Sun
35:08||Season 1589, Ep. 3In today's episode of Dog Days, Kit Marlowe finally arrives at work, where he finds the entire company of The Theatre, under Ned Alleyne, awaiting the arrival of his new script: Tamburlaine The Great Part 2.Yet Kit is unwilling to part with his pages until he gets paid. Which is why we find him outside of the Earl of Oxford's rooms, negotiating with a private guard who is as thick as mince while a company of increasingly hot and sweaty actors wait in the yard, trying not to look at what Oxford, a.k.a. Edward de Vere, is up to in the "Lord's Room" that happens to be fully visible to anyone below The Theatre's oak-beamed gallery...We hope that this one makes you laugh as much as it might disturb, and can't wait for you to hear tomorrow's episode, which will take us south of the river!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Dog Days: Chapter 2 - Lord Of My Fortune
23:24||Season 1589, Ep. 2On today's episode, we pick up right where yesterday's chapter left off - with Kit Marlowe cracked over the back of the head with a club and bundled into a pure black covered carriage. The person waiting within is cool and calm, despite the summer heat. Old, dying, yet phenomenally powerful, Sir Francis Walsingham is Queen Elizabeth's Secretary of State. Like a spider at the heart of a web, he has agents everywhere - but the one he has most pressing business with is the young playwright sat before him.Specifically, Walsingham has a mission for Kit to undertake. Although Walsingham's code name speaks of his true nature, for while Marlowe might be known as 'Ganymede,' the young boy lover of the God of Gods, Sir Francis is known as 'Janus' - the two-faced deity of both endings and beginnings...See you again tomorrow for Chapter 3!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more.
